How to unlock the Toytinkerer achievement in Biomutant - Definitive Guide
As you playthrough the game you will encounter a character holding a lantern and it will assign the side quest called mirage. They spawn in random locations, but fairly frequently.
Chase down the character with the lantern before they disappears, you will then be required to perform a quick fight. Win or lose the fight you will receive an upgrade. You will need to repeat this 4 times.

Is there some trick to get the NPC to spawn? I found him once early on and have since finished the main story and the majority of achievements without seeing him again.

Got the first 3 spawns without issue and now 3 times in a row I've had the character spawn and run up to him only for monsters to come from out of sight and start a battle and he disappears... hahah.

*NOTE* This trophy is currently glitched as of patch 2.01 and may not pop for some if not all players, in that the quest giver (a large bear carrying a lantern) appears briefly before turning around and vanishing in random locations, meaning you can’t receive the side quest. If you have a disc version revert back to patch 1.00 and don’t install the update. Failing that a newer patch will hopefully correct this.
The Automaton upgrades are in the Gear – Automaton – Functions tab in the menus and the following upgrades are required:
Flashlight
Health Injector
Glider
Turret
Boost
In order to upgrade these, you need to find the large bear carrying a lantern in the open world. His spawn points are random so you will need to be on the lookout for him and engage with him when he appears. The quest ‘Mirage’ will see you revisit a childhood memory and when successful in defeating a particular character, when you return back to the present day where you can choose an upgrade and you need to do this 4 times for the trophy to unlock.

Automaton Upgrades are unlocked by finding a panda bear with a lantern at night, as seen in this image. They will generally spawn out in the more open areas, but will do so nearly every night until you interact with them four times to complete flashback sequences. Each time you do so, you can choose one of the four upgrades for the Automaton, and will unlock the achievement after the fourth flashback.

There is no need to complete tasks related to boards; it is the improvements that count, not the appearance. During the course of the game, you will meet a panda with a mirage flashlight 4 times; we run up and experience a flight into the past, as a result of which we get a new quality of automaton to choose from, and so on 4 times.

The quest "Mirage" also counts.
