One thing to keep in mind that's not immediately clear: pressing the restart button does not count as a death in and of itself. This is really useful when you find yourself stuck, or you're used to the timing of a section after a checkpoint, particularly on 4-1 and 4-4.

And the button to do so is Y. Hitting this will reset the checkpoint, putting you at the nearest flag you have touched. Hitting RB however, will reset the entire level.
