How to unlock the Gold Medalist - Fishing achievement in Hokko Life - Definitive Guide

The name and logo can be confusing, you don't actually need gold medals on all 4 tournaments. You just need to compete and get at least a bronze medal for it to count towards the achievement. I needed to do 5 tournaments because I didn't catch enough fish for one of them to get bronze.

I would like to add that if you have enough fish to get bronze you can go to sleep to skip the rest of the day and speed up the process instead of fishing for 30 minutes or so

Fishing tournaments will occur on the 17th of each month after you have found the fisherman and cleaned up the Grove.
Head to the beach on that date and you'll find a blackboard set up on the lower half of the beach. You cannot read the blackboard until 0900 when the competition starts.
From memory, all 4 tournaments I partipated in required 6 fish for bronze, 8 for silver and 10 for gold. As mentioned in the other solution, you only need to get bronze for the tournament to count towards this achievement. You can keep track as the day after a successful tournament you will receive a statue in your letterbox. It's also listed as one of the Merits.
It seems the requirements for catching a type of fish, spelled out here do not seem to apply during tournaments. I caught fish outside of the times listed on that site and with different bait - I used worm bait throughout.
I ended up with 1 gold and 3 bronze. The achievement unlocked when I woke the day after my 4th tournament, before I had even checked the letterbox and grabbed my trophy.
