How to unlock the Duck Hunt achievement in Lumo - Definitive Guide

This is a really tough achievement, due to auto-save and no option to change save slots whilst playing.

You can circumvent this by immediately pressing the guide button, highlighting the Lumo tile, pressing Menu, and select QUIT if you die whilst collecting a duck. Then just reload your saved game.

All of the ducks are hidden in plain sight, and can be collected from the start. As the ducks are floating in deadly water, you must jump onto a duck and immediately off it to safety to pick it up.

Pro tip: Instead of trying to time your jump as you hit the duck's head, hold the jump button down BEFORE landing on a duck to immediately bounce off it, with no fear of mistimed button presses! This also works for the various bubbles you have to bounce across in the game.

The duck is 'safe' and classed as collected when you exit the screen by any means after picking it up. Usually this means just heading for the nearest door! As you play through the game you'll see the bright yellow ducks everywhere - although a collectible, they're not hidden unlike the cassette tapes.

The book, collected very early on and accessible via the pause screen, keeps track of your collectibles.

Oh no! I know Gareth patched the game a few months ago - maybe this exploit was fixed. I'll give it another run.

I wonder how fast you have to be with this in the current dash, since "dashboarding" isn't really a thing like it used to be. I can press Guide > Right > Downdown > Start > Downdowndown > Quit pretty quickly, but I can't really tell what's happening in the background as I do that. I can see my character just starting to respawn before I quit though, hopefully that's not too late laugh I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Man, this sucks... if it wasn't for the fact you can fall through a duck if you don't land EXACTLY on it, it wouldn't be so bad. But he falls through it, COLLECTS IT, then dies instantly. Really fair.

Oh my god, FUCK duck 28, with the spinning things in the middle of the room. How the hell do you jump back onto them from the duck? In the video he just kinda gets up, but I can't do it for the life of me.

When you've jumped and are aiming for the duck, hold your jump button down in mid air. This makes it easier to bounce off it. But yes, it took me many attempts on several of the ducks to unlock the achievement! Please be sure to check out and vote up my other guides if they are useful to you :)

You can also use the save trick to get this achievement, it is more reliable than the dashboard method. If you want to learn how to do it, go to the Ori and the blind forest DE achievement list and check the guide for "One life mode", the strategy there is what you do in Lumo.

As much as the cloud v local save thing works for many games, Lumo absolutely doesn't save unless you change rooms, collect a story item, or quit. So dashboard force / quit is the quickest way :)

@ mataeus, so are you saying as long as you dont change rooms you can dashboard?

By J ROLLER 1979 on 08 Dec 2017 00:50
Correct. The moment you die, hit the guide button, scroll down to the Lumo tile, press menu and select quit from the pop-up menu. If you go through an exit to another screen, the game will save and you're buggered.

The ducks have glitched on me it says I have 31 when I know I have all of them as I have been following a guide. Once you have all the ducks anyway it is ok to die isnt it? Doing the dash I mean apart from the other achievements you need without dying.

Dammit. 2nd playthrough of definitely dashboard IMMEDIATELY if I die... got all 32 again... still no achv. I feel like this is only gonna pop if I abso don't die. Which is a crazy. This is going to be the hardest achv....

Thanks, Mataeus just done it any tips for getting across the chain where the last duck is that really was hard for me and it is going to be a pain on old school.
@ GRAND NOBLE it seems like you don't have to dashboard as soon as you die as long as you don't go through a door and get a save

I ran thru again and the achv popped this time. To confirm, yes I did die, yes I did dashboard.

But this time I made it to duck 15 without ever dying, so maybe that helped. maybe? Then I only died a few more times (at ducks). But I'm thinking maybe there's an early duck (1-14) that is more glitchy with this achv. The only I can think of.

I've gone for this a couple of times and still no achievement. On my second try I didn't pick anything up but was just working on the ducks. Will give it another attempt prior to saying goodbye to this one. :P

So, quick question. Except for the times when I go for a duck in a room. Can I die in between ducks? Or does it need to be a no death run all the way until I get all the ducks?

Cheers buddy, and no problem smile

Just be very careful, it's so easy to fall and die instead of jumping off the duck. If you're unsure as to whether you collected it or not, dashboard then quit just to be safe.

I used the dashboard method, but the achievement didn't pop. The only time I think it may have been messed up is in the room with the duck and map page. I died after getting both the map page and duck, so I dashboarded and quit. When I reloaded, the map page was already gone, so I think it might have saved when I collected the page. :(

Darn it!

Make sure you collect the map page first, then exit the screen. Then go back in (autosave) and use the usual duck method. It only takes an hour or so to collect the ducks, as they're only in the first part of the castle :-)

Dashboard exactly as I say in my solution :-) I'll go through it again on a second account to pinpoint trouble spots

This is what got me the achv (finally).

Well, I was afraid that dashboarding would be inconsistent and that there was no way to know if it worked so I tried the save method first. It's such a hassle with going offline and going back online and exiting the game to create a save then relaunching to ensure sync etc. Two times through with the save method and it didn't work either time. I was probably careless at some point along the way both times (distracted during loading and not following the procedure correctly etc.) and didn't do the process properly, so I assume it will work out but I just wasn't careful. But I tried it again by dashboarding quickly when I died with a duck. And it worked the first time. Much easier that way.

You can die any time, as long as it's not between picking up a duck and getting a save (i.e. exiting a room).

None of the ducks are in rooms with quest items, so the only thing you have to do is pick up the duck, and then leave the room without dying in between.

No need to clear local saves or anything if it goes tits up, just dashboard and quit.

I know a lot of the commenters have had trouble, but I think one mistake people make is when they jump for a duck and go straight through it and die in the water. They've still collected the duck, and died holding it.

Summary:

You can die at any time without voiding the cheev, but if you die between collecting a duck and leaving the room, you must dashboard and force quit to still get the cheev.

Three times I've tried this now.
First time, dashboard-quitting as suggested. No achievement.
Second time, I unplugged the network cable before each duck and reverted to the cloud save if I died. Still no achievement.
Third time, as before, but with way fewer deaths (only about four in total, and the only duck-related one was the annoying duck 28). Still no achievement.
I suppose there's a chance that it'll pop randomly over the next few days, but it's looking like I might have to try to do this legit. cry I wouldn't mind, but duck 28 takes the piss.
EDIT: Fourth time was the charm, it seems. I died ONCE (duck 28, of course) and did one cloud restore, but this time I deleted the "reserved space" file as well as my save. I don't know what the "deciding factor" was, but I'm really glad this is done.

I just went through it again, and I still didn't get it.

I realized there is more than one room with a duck and map page; to clarify, I was speaking of the first room you encounter with the bubble in the middle. I avoided the map page altogether this time. In the second room with both (with the treadmills) I got the map page and exited the room before going back in and grabbing the duck. I avoided the map page altogether in the third room as well.

I just grabbed duck 32, and the achievement still didn't pop when I went into the next room. So I'm not sure what I did wrong this time. I died on duck 12, so maybe I have to try and not die until at least duck 15 like GRAND NOBLE did?

Another thing I noticed is that when people say to dashboard, they say Guide > A > A then Start and Quit. I only press A once though because pressing it a second time just resumes the game. Am I dashboarding incorrectly?

Possibly glitched.

Ducks are a type of collectibles in the game. You can find them all before the ice world, meaning that if you didn’t get the trophy before entering the first ice room, you missed one or more ducks on the way. If you are following the first YouTube playlist linked above, you will be getting all ducks with little effort; however, keep in mind that when you hop onto a duck (ducks are placed on deadly purple water) and then bounce back to a safe platform, the duck won’t be yours just yet but you will be “holding” it. In order to claim it for yourself, you need to exit the room while holding it without dying. If you die, the duck will respawn and you will have to hop onto it again.

This trophy forbids you from dying while holding a duck and since some of the ducks can be tricky to get, you are almost bound to die while holding one at some point. To circumvent this issue, I recommend a save back-up as soon as you enter a room with a duck so that if you end up dying while holding it you can simply copy back that save file and try again.

Even though I haven’t personally tested it, players have confirmed that if you die you can simply close the game and reload without needing to back-up saves at all. Also, please note that you can die in rooms with ducks if you haven’t hopped onto it yet. A useful technique to make things slightly easier is to hold while jumping onto a duck, because you’ll bounce back from it automatically (pressing at the right time would be harder). The trophy will pop after picking up the last duck and safely exiting the room it was in.

Lastly, it seems that the trophy can glitch and become unobtainable if, while in the soap room, you get the duck first and then roll out the soap, therefore be sure to deal with the soap first and then collect your duck! (thanks to P00TSMASH for this)

This achievement is missable!

Ducks in the game are one of the collectables you need to get. You need to get all 32 without dying while holding one and they are all in plain sight, but they are placed on deadly purple water that will kill you. The best way to get the ducks are to hold your A button to jump on them and keep it pressed so you bounce back off them. You can find them all before the ice world. If you do happen to die at any time while getting a duck or after before exiting the room you’re in you can dashboard the game and quit, as long as you don’t exit the room forcing the game to save. Then you can load it up again and give it another go. You need to all of them in one playthrough as there is no chapter select.

Here is a link to all the collectables in the game. Thanks to GuiasXamonicas for the guide.

This trophy is not as difficult as it might seem, I did it by trial and error, in short, by guessing, first after death I left the room with a duck in my hands, went back in and tried again, it doesn’t work that way. The miracle turned out to be closer than it seemed, so I’ll explain: we go into the room with the duck and try to take away the quack, it didn’t work, we close the game and death doesn’t count! water, and then when you collect the last one, the trophy will fall out.

You can't die in a room with a duck at all. What happened to the duck, that without it we got a failure, we immediately exit the game and restart. At least that's what I got.

The hint written by Gamemaniac83 is incorrect. You can die in a room with a duck, the main thing, as the description of the trophy says, is not to die with a duck in your hands. If you died, then as we wrote earlier, close the game and try again

I’ll add that you can’t die with a duck until the moment it quacks in the next room, there’s no need to rush. A dangerous moment on the 31st duck, when you go out with it into another room, a spider can get into you from the threshold and everything will be covered... so be careful)
