First of all 4th and 5th boards with the scissors seem easier than others. Second, collect and purchase power ups. (magnifying glass, time duration extension, shuffle, and lucky charms - ability to highlight top tiles, are especially handy)

You can play through the level until the end and estimate if you will be able to complete it with the gold medal in time, have enough power ups, and if completing task and solving the board is possible.

If that is not the case, and you see that it’s unsolvable or gonna fail, simply quit to dashboard and reload the game. (Do not go back to the level select menu as your used up rewards will be wasted.) You can try the level again and all your unlocked or purchased power ups will be there.
