How to unlock the Dugout Walk achievement in MLB The Show 21 - Definitive Guide
Hello, ladies and gents. Today we're going to attempt to get the "Dugout Walk" achievement in MLB The Show 21 for picking a runner off a base. The video below details what you should do, but I will also be typing out a Guide as well. The achievement is much more easily gotten with a boosting partner, but for those of you that don't have that option, this is the method I used to get it by myself.
----------
EDIT: MLB The Show 21 will have regular roster updates and one just happened, so be wary. IF you need to, go to Create - Roster Control - Roster Control and pick the team you need and select Lineup. Hitting LB here will allow you to, say, put Jordan Luplow to lead-off against LHP as we do in the Guide.
----------
This isn't foolproof. The game has 20 years of simulation programming in it, so nothing is ever repeatable. And because we need to rely on the AI, it can be a very frustrating achievement.
First, go to Settings - Settings - Gameplay and make sure the Pitching Difficulty is Veteran. Gameplay Style should still be Casual but nothing else is important. Back out and apply the settings.
Now return to Settings - Sliders this time.
Dynamic Difficulty - all the way LEFT
Human Contact/Power/Timing/Foul Frequency and Solid Hits - default
Human Starter Stamina - all the way RIGHT (reliever stamina is irrelevant)
Human Pitcher Control/Consistency - all the way RIGHT
CPU Contact/Power/Timing/Solid Hits - all the way LEFT
CPU Foul Frequency - all the way RIGHT
CPU Pickoffs - all the way RIGHT
all other CPU stuff - default
Baserunner Steal ability - all the way LEFT
Baserunner Steal Frequency - all the way RIGHT
Everything else should be at default levels.
Press A and ok a few times to save the sliders.
We will be using specific teams for this, so follow along here.
Go to Create - Roster Control - Edit Player.
Find the Cleveland Indians and go to Right Fielders. Find Jordan Luplow and Edit Him. Go to Attributes and make BR Aggressiveness 99, and Stealing 75.
Back out and save your rosters. Now head to Exhibition Mode.
Choose the Cleveland Indians as the team on the left, and the LA Dodgers as the team on the right. Uniform and Stadium don't matter, but make sure Fast Play is the Presentation Mode and play in Clear Skies weather. Advance to pick Clayton Kershaw as your pitcher, and Jordan Luplow should be the top hitter on the Cleveland side. Enter the game now.
We are immediately going to press LB + B, then A to intentionally walk Luplow to 1st. Now, as I said, this isn't foolproof, but on the left side of the screen a window will show Luplow stepping away from 1st base. 2 steps is normal, but if he ever takes a third, we will be throwing over with the LT and B buttons held together. You may have to press B again to throw.
What I do is attempt to wait and watch the runner for a few seconds. If he is going to take a third step, he will do so almost immediately after taking his first two. If he doesn't take a step, I throw a pitch way outside the strike zone for a ball. Then I do the same thing again. If he takes a step, I throw over, but if he doesn't, I throw until its a 3 ball count. At that point, I do the same thing as before, except I try to throw strikes and strike out the batter. If I do strike out the batter, I continue the steps above with the second hitter, and again with the third. If there's a walk or a hit that results in Luplow no longer being on first, simply Pause, Exit and Restart, then intentionally walk Luplow and start all over.
And that's what I have for you, guys and gals. I was able to replicate him leading off a third step multiple times, but it really is up to the AI whether or not you can pick him off. I have not been able to find sliders or situations that make him stop paying attention regularly. I tried making the hitters behind Luplow excellent, I tried making them terrible, I tried different pitchers(Lefthanded or Right) and different settings, I even tried pitchers that have excellent pickoff numbers in real life and nothing has an effect on the baserunning awareness of the AI, sadly.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Bonkekook's method still worked for me in Dec 2021, and without any additional tweaks...only difference is that Myles Straw (CF) is now the leadoff man for Cleveland and so I edited his attributes instead of Jordan Luplow.
Took about 10 tries before Kershaw made a bad throw to first and my 1B was able to recover and throw to second to catch the runner there.

Can't believe someone downvoted this....it worked within the first 4 tries for me. Almost every time Luplow would lead off a third step, sometimes before I even threw a pitch. Its just a matter of getting lucky with the AI but I can't imagine any other solution without boosting being better.

Easiest way is to boost this by starting up an online exhibition match with a friend.
Select your profile in the top left of the main menu > hit to select 'My Profile' > Move left one and select the 'friends' circle > Select your friend and click 'invite to exhibition game'
When in the game, intentionally walk the batter with +
When your friend is on first base, have him increase his lead off by hitting a few times.
Then as the pitcher, hold and hit to throw to first and you should pick your friend off no problem.

Yeah, boosting is pretty much the only way to get this achievement, since the AI doesn't take enough of a lead.

Definitely need help with a boost on this one. I've tried everything to get it against the CPU.

My Ballplayer is a pitcher. I was able to unlock this achievement by overthrowing (aiming outside the target) on a pick off to first. The runner broke for second. Fielded the ball with the first baseman and threw to second for the tag... Achievement unlocked. This was in AAA ball (after getting sent down from the majors in RTTS) with essentially default settings.
EDIT: Some players (see comments) have had quicker success than RTTS play if you go the Exhibition mode route: "Player Lock" with the Right Trigger once you've gotten past the team and stadium selection (once you choose your pitcher and lineup).

This worked to perfection. To add to this (and should add to the original solution if you ever see this @buckyfellini), if you go the Exhibition route, you can "Player Lock" with the Right Trigger once you've gotten past the team and stadium selection (once you choose your pitcher and lineup).
I personally got this as Clayton Kershaw vs the Cleveland Indians (now Guardians). There lead-off man at the time of writing this is Myles Straw, whom has a steal stat in the 60s. I intentionally walked Myles (Left Button + B), pressed A to confirm, choose a random pitch (A for 4-Seam Fastball), then Left Trigger + B to attempt a pickoff. This will start a "quick time" event. It took me a few throws to get the throw to "miss", but I got it by basically holding down on the left stick and hitting right trigger with the crosshairs basically on the mound. This was enough to make a wide throw that richocheted off the first base coach, the runner took off, the first baseman recovered the ball and made the easy out at 2B.
Hope this helps someone else get it faster than me!

This is a good solution not sure why folks are down voting. I unlocked this during normal RTTS play - pitcher missed the first baseman on pickoff throw -> ball bounced off the first base ump -> runner takes off anyway -> easy throw out at second base

All of the other guides are perfectly fine and work just as good. However, if you don’t have a friend to boost this with or cant seem to get it against the cpu, then I have a suggestion.
Try loading up a game of diamond dynasty and messaging your opponent asking to boost the achievement. Just tell them you’ll intentionally walk them and pick them off at first, then you get the achievement and quit so they get any easy win. Most people will do it because they want the free win. If you don’t want a loss to your diamond dynasty team then this might not be the best method, but this is how I got the achievement.
Also I had some trouble getting my pitcher to throw to first, but I realized I had a shift on so just watch out for that. Simply press LT then B and he should throw to first. It’s also important if you tell them to take a lead off because most of the time the pitcher will throw it and the base runner will automatically get back to first. Hope this helps :)
