How to unlock the Dugout Walk achievement in MLB The Show 21 - Definitive Guide

Hello, ladies and gents. Today we're going to attempt to get the "Dugout Walk" achievement in MLB The Show 21 for picking a runner off a base. The video below details what you should do, but I will also be typing out a Guide as well. The achievement is much more easily gotten with a boosting partner, but for those of you that don't have that option, this is the method I used to get it by myself.

----------
EDIT: MLB The Show 21 will have regular roster updates and one just happened, so be wary. IF you need to, go to Create - Roster Control - Roster Control and pick the team you need and select Lineup. Hitting LB here will allow you to, say, put Jordan Luplow to lead-off against LHP as we do in the Guide.
----------

This isn't foolproof. The game has 20 years of simulation programming in it, so nothing is ever repeatable. And because we need to rely on the AI, it can be a very frustrating achievement.

First, go to Settings - Settings - Gameplay and make sure the Pitching Difficulty is Veteran. Gameplay Style should still be Casual but nothing else is important. Back out and apply the settings.

Now return to Settings - Sliders this time.

Dynamic Difficulty - all the way LEFT
Human Contact/Power/Timing/Foul Frequency and Solid Hits - default
Human Starter Stamina - all the way RIGHT (reliever stamina is irrelevant)
Human Pitcher Control/Consistency - all the way RIGHT
CPU Contact/Power/Timing/Solid Hits - all the way LEFT
CPU Foul Frequency - all the way RIGHT
CPU Pickoffs - all the way RIGHT
all other CPU stuff - default
Baserunner Steal ability - all the way LEFT
Baserunner Steal Frequency - all the way RIGHT

Everything else should be at default levels.

Press A and ok a few times to save the sliders.

We will be using specific teams for this, so follow along here.

Go to Create - Roster Control - Edit Player.

Find the Cleveland Indians and go to Right Fielders. Find Jordan Luplow and Edit Him. Go to Attributes and make BR Aggressiveness 99, and Stealing 75.

Back out and save your rosters. Now head to Exhibition Mode.

Choose the Cleveland Indians as the team on the left, and the LA Dodgers as the team on the right. Uniform and Stadium don't matter, but make sure Fast Play is the Presentation Mode and play in Clear Skies weather. Advance to pick Clayton Kershaw as your pitcher, and Jordan Luplow should be the top hitter on the Cleveland side. Enter the game now.

We are immediately going to press LB + B, then A to intentionally walk Luplow to 1st. Now, as I said, this isn't foolproof, but on the left side of the screen a window will show Luplow stepping away from 1st base. 2 steps is normal, but if he ever takes a third, we will be throwing over with the LT and B buttons held together. You may have to press B again to throw.

What I do is attempt to wait and watch the runner for a few seconds. If he is going to take a third step, he will do so almost immediately after taking his first two. If he doesn't take a step, I throw a pitch way outside the strike zone for a ball. Then I do the same thing again. If he takes a step, I throw over, but if he doesn't, I throw until its a 3 ball count. At that point, I do the same thing as before, except I try to throw strikes and strike out the batter. If I do strike out the batter, I continue the steps above with the second hitter, and again with the third. If there's a walk or a hit that results in Luplow no longer being on first, simply Pause, Exit and Restart, then intentionally walk Luplow and start all over.

And that's what I have for you, guys and gals. I was able to replicate him leading off a third step multiple times, but it really is up to the AI whether or not you can pick him off. I have not been able to find sliders or situations that make him stop paying attention regularly. I tried making the hitters behind Luplow excellent, I tried making them terrible, I tried different pitchers(Lefthanded or Right) and different settings, I even tried pitchers that have excellent pickoff numbers in real life and nothing has an effect on the baserunning awareness of the AI, sadly.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Bonkekook's method still worked for me in Dec 2021, and without any additional tweaks...only difference is that Myles Straw (CF) is now the leadoff man for Cleveland and so I edited his attributes instead of Jordan Luplow.

Took about 10 tries before Kershaw made a bad throw to first and my 1B was able to recover and throw to second to catch the runner there.

Can't believe someone downvoted this....it worked within the first 4 tries for me. Almost every time Luplow would lead off a third step, sometimes before I even threw a pitch. Its just a matter of getting lucky with the AI but I can't imagine any other solution without boosting being better.

Followed the guide but couldn't eliminate Luplow before he could touch safely the 1st base. I put down his speed to 10 and his reactiveness to 15 and worked at first try. I don't know if it is just a coincidence but if it can help others, it is worth a try!
Great guide, by the way and thumbs up!

Yes... it's totally random. "My" Luplow even with 3 steps away could always slide back safely on 1st. I am happy I could get it with that adjustment. Now time to get the other achievements left!

I can’t get this solution or Molitov’s adjustment to work. He would very rarely lead off with your sliders recs Bonkekook, and never with Molitov’s… any other pointers?

Thanks Bonkekook, I'll go through everything again and give it another try.

Did finally get it with your settings. Definitely would lead off further more often without the changes from Molitov. Finally got it by accidentally overthrowing the first baseman on an attempted pick off and getting him out with the tag at second. Thanks!

Won this one in RTTS but I wouldn't recommend my method.

Threw a pickoff throw but missed the target reticle. Threw the ball away and the runner took off... but the ball hit the first base umpire and fell to the ground. 1B threw out the runner at 2nd with ease.

@Armstrong x360a and @VincibleOcean71

One of the other solutions on here is to throw the pickoff throw away and get it that way, but I couldn't figure out a way to make sure that always happened, either. Not sure if that's repeatable or not, but I'm glad it worked for you guys.

Seemed to work best for me with two outs and a full count. Runner went even without the extra lead off and I threw to first then got him at second.

By iBeatStuffUp on 25 May 2021 00:01
@iBeatStuffUp For editing him specifically? I can't remember off the top of my head and my install file corrupted so I have to re-install all 80gigs. Try the bumpers/triggers or moving the analogs, as those are usually how you change teams in the menus. If you mean for changing Lineups, you go to Create - Roster Control - Roster Control and choose Cleveland at that menu.

I apologize for some of the vagueness. If this doesn't help, let me know and I can jump in the game tomorrow when the file has installed properly again.

@GrouchyMonst3r Its not foolproof, but there is no such thing without boosting it. There is no method to make sure this you can pick him off. I've rarely had him never take the 3rd step though, so I'd make sure your sliders and difficulty are the same as I describe. Otherwise, there are plenty of comments here describing adjustments that can be tried as well.

Finally got this! Seems inconsistent at best, but still workable with some patience. After trying the original solution and then making my way through the following comment suggestions, I got lucky with the ball thrown into the ground. The ball bounced to the side of the 1st baseman and thankfully hit the umpire's leg! The 1st baseman was able to grab it and throw the runner out at 2nd base. (Took up to an hour total for the achievement to be obtained.)

Thx for the suggestions everyone!

I played just a regular game, threw to 1st to get the runner, it was a terrible throw that my teammate chase it down and threw to 2nd because the runner advanced and got the runner out!

This worked like a charm. First try actually. I intentionally walked him, he took three steps, I threw over and he was trying to steal second so I threw it to second and he was tagged out. Boom achievement. I was expecting this to be much worse but worked out nicely. Thank you!

I was almost done trying and I messaged star21player. Tried the Steeledowl method with lowering the arm accuracy. I also increased the speed/fielding/throw of my 1b and 2b players so they could pick him off after a bad throw. I had to use the player lock on my pitcher as well because the throw using RT was not showing up for me.

Moliitov, thanks! I'm glad my solution got you close, at least! I used your changes and Luplow wouldn't even take a third step for me, but hopefully it works for someone else. Ironically, the 2nd batter grounded into a forceout for me, leaving the 2nd batter at first, and I picked him off first immediately after, lol. Couldn't replicate that, though.

This is just a dumb, random achievement. I don't think there's a certain slider setup that makes it happen 100%, sadly. I was just able to find sliders that made the batter lead off with a third step almost every time, and then you have to hope you get lucky throwing over.

@Armstrong x360a I clarified my steps above so take a look and see if that makes any difference?

If you're sure difficulty, sliders and attributes are as I mentioned above you can try increasing his personal speed and steal attributes which should cause him to lead off more, but with those attributes raised up I was never able to successfully pick him off, and he would usually steal early in the atbats without even taking a third step, which invalidates the pick-off achievement. You can try adjusting those sliders and attributes, and maybe it'll work for you.

In all honesty, on all the accounts I've tested it I haven't run into any issues with getting him to lead off, mine have been with getting the pickoff on the throw over, so I'm sorry I can't be more helpful with that.

Just got this. Was not able to do it by waiting for the third step. Instead, I reduced most of Kershaw's fielding stats and made sure he had 0 arm accuracy and 0 arm strength and did what VincibleOcean71 did. The 1st baseman grabbed the ball off the ground and threw to second for the pick-off.

In order to do it, I player-locked as Kershaw, which you can do by pulling RT in the pre-game menus when you see the pitching roster. I intentionally walked Luplow, then threw to 1st with LT + B, didn't pull RT for the throw and let the timer around the target run out. The ball hit the baseman's feet, but he managed to pick the ball up in time to throw to 2nd for the pick-off.

Got this on the first try after adjusting Kershaw's stats. Not sure how lucky it was though, it needs some testing.

I’ve tried this achievement multiple ways and it has not popped. I was able to pick off a runner at second in a exhibition game. In RTTS I’ve done the bad throw to first and gotten them out at second. I haven’t been able to pick off someone at first taking a long lead, but I have to believe the first two examples I gave should qualify.

Any ideas?

Easiest way is to boost this by starting up an online exhibition match with a friend.

Select your profile in the top left of the main menu > hit cn_RB to select 'My Profile' > Move cn_LSl left one and select the 'friends' circle > Select your friend and click 'invite to exhibition game'

When in the game, intentionally walk the batter with cn_LB+cn_B
When your friend is on first base, have him increase his lead off by hitting cn_LB a few times.

Then as the pitcher, hold cn_LT and hit cn_B to throw to first and you should pick your friend off no problem.

My Ballplayer is a pitcher. I was able to unlock this achievement by overthrowing (aiming outside the target) on a pick off to first. The runner broke for second. Fielded the ball with the first baseman and threw to second for the tag... Achievement unlocked. This was in AAA ball (after getting sent down from the majors in RTTS) with essentially default settings.

EDIT: Some players (see comments) have had quicker success than RTTS play if you go the Exhibition mode route: "Player Lock" with the Right Trigger once you've gotten past the team and stadium selection (once you choose your pitcher and lineup).

This worked to perfection. To add to this (and should add to the original solution if you ever see this @buckyfellini), if you go the Exhibition route, you can "Player Lock" with the Right Trigger once you've gotten past the team and stadium selection (once you choose your pitcher and lineup).

I personally got this as Clayton Kershaw vs the Cleveland Indians (now Guardians). There lead-off man at the time of writing this is Myles Straw, whom has a steal stat in the 60s. I intentionally walked Myles (Left Button + B), pressed A to confirm, choose a random pitch (A for 4-Seam Fastball), then Left Trigger + B to attempt a pickoff. This will start a "quick time" event. It took me a few throws to get the throw to "miss", but I got it by basically holding down on the left stick and hitting right trigger with the crosshairs basically on the mound. This was enough to make a wide throw that richocheted off the first base coach, the runner took off, the first baseman recovered the ball and made the easy out at 2B.

Hope this helps someone else get it faster than me!

This is a good solution not sure why folks are down voting. I unlocked this during normal RTTS play - pitcher missed the first baseman on pickoff throw -> ball bounced off the first base ump -> runner takes off anyway -> easy throw out at second base

Yep, too easy. Definitely the best way (RTTS) if you aren't boosting it. Didn't adjust any difficulty or sliders, just intentionally walked, then threw away the picking throw. Took two tries, first one bounced into outfield!

Can confirm this is the best method and should be higher up. I went into exhibition on easiest difficulty everything and did a player lock on the starting pitcher. Overthrew intentionally to first base and let the fielders take care of the rest.

OMG thank you codomojump. I was trying for over an hour with the accepted solution. I did not know about the player lock feature. That is the key to getting quick time events for the throw to 1st versus having the player just make the throw automatically.

^^ Same... Thank you @codomojump. I literally got this in less than 5min. Awesome solution man. Original post @buckyfellini was definitely on the right track with the player lock but doing it in exhibition made it a lot quicker to set up. Just remember to be the Home team, so you pitch first and can restart if it doesn't work.

Took all of about 3 minutes. Bounced a throw to the 1B and the ball hit the coach. Runner took off for second and thrown out by a mile. Achievement popped.

All of the other guides are perfectly fine and work just as good. However, if you don’t have a friend to boost this with or cant seem to get it against the cpu, then I have a suggestion.

Try loading up a game of diamond dynasty and messaging your opponent asking to boost the achievement. Just tell them you’ll intentionally walk them and pick them off at first, then you get the achievement and quit so they get any easy win. Most people will do it because they want the free win. If you don’t want a loss to your diamond dynasty team then this might not be the best method, but this is how I got the achievement.

Also I had some trouble getting my pitcher to throw to first, but I realized I had a shift on so just watch out for that. Simply press LT then B and he should throw to first. It’s also important if you tell them to take a lead off because most of the time the pitcher will throw it and the base runner will automatically get back to first. Hope this helps :)
