How to unlock the The Fall of the Space Fortress achievement in R-Type Final 2 - Definitive Guide
I would recommend making an edited course with this stage at the start, so that you can play it with continues available, because you still stand a good chance of defeating the boss even if it kills you and robs you of all your power-ups, since there are three power-up pickups available in the boss section. Take advantage of this and persevere, you don't have to do this in one credit.
Within the opening seconds of this stage, you'll see two little bronze-coloured orbs floating in space. They don't attack you, but depending on whether you fly above them, below them, or through the middle of them, you'll take a different route through the stage.
You need to complete each route on R-Typer difficulty. I did them all with the Leo2. There are really only two difficult parts:
1) the barrage of those silver-coloured R-Type craft during the diagonal section. I found that if I had full powered red laser, I could stay pressed against the lower diagonal wall and just keep shooting. I retreated slightly whenever a "low" ship approached, to give my lasers a chance to hit it, and advanced again afterwards so that I didn't get forced into the corner. If you don't have some serious firepower going into this section, you should probably just restart.
2) the final boss area, but there is an approximately figure-8 pattern to move in to avoid the sword/axe-wielding bad guys. Keep the force on your back at all times during this section. As mentioned, you can take as many credits as you need to learn this and defeat it.
