How to unlock the Mountain Hermit achievement in Ticket To Ride - Definitive Guide
A mountain route is any route which has a cross through at least one of the track spaces.
The entire route DOES NOT have to have crosses through.
The entire route DOES NOT have to have crosses through.
This trophy is called "Mountain Hermit" and it requires you to win on the Asia game board from the Legendary Asia DLC by claiming only mountain routes.
What are Mountain routes? Mountain routes cause wear and tear on the trains that travel them. These Mountain routes are identified by an X-symbol on at least one of the spaces making them. To claim a Mountain route, a player must play the usual set of cards of the proper color and quantity and place the required number of Train Cars on the route. The Train Cars placed on the route score as normal. In addition, the player must discard one Train Car for each X on the route. Each Train Car discarded immediately adds 2 points to the player’s score.
Some double-routes feature a colored Mountain route and a parallel, regular gray route. The gray route does not pass through mountains and does not require a Train Car to be discarded, whereas the other Mountain route still does. There are only six routes where this occurs. So, if you're claiming the following routes, be sure to pick the Mountain route!
Moscow—Perm
Perm—Omsk
Omsk—Krasnoyarsk
Krasnoyarsk—Irkutsk
Irkutsk—Chita
Khabarovsk—Vladivostok
As with pretty much every trophy in Ticket to Ride, they're quite luck based depending on what you're going for. So, first thing is Destination Tickets. Obviously, you want destinations connected by only mountain routes. This should be the full list of only mountain route destination tickets. Some are a bit curvy on the way to them, but you can get to them with just mountain routes:
Krasnoyarsk—Peking
Krasnoyarsk—Samarkand
Lhasa—Bangkok
Moscow—Ankara
Perm—Irkutsk
Perm—Tehran
Rawalpindi—Bombay
Samarkand—Agra
Tbilisi—Shiraz
Tehran—Kathmandu (Spelled Kathmandou on the Destination Ticket)
Try to have at least one, better if there's two, but if you can only get one, try and get a low cost destination ticket that will not hurt too much at the end.
My best advice is to just grab train cars for multiple turns, claiming a route here and there to block the CPU and/or make headway on connecting a Destination Ticket. You'll also want to go for the longest route, essentially renamed to Asian Explorer bonus for this DLC. That's a +10 at the end. Your two choices are basically across the top going from Moscow to Peking, or kind of the left-middle through the middle/bottom going from Ankara to Lhasa/Xi'an/Hanoi.
Anyway, at some point, you should have a whole lot of train car cards and hopefully the CPU hasn't claimed many routes yet if you haven't dropped into the mid 20 trains left. Once you have a lot, go crazy claiming those Mountain routes in order to quickly deplete your trains and end the game before they can finish their Destination Tickets and/or claim a lot of long routes.
By the end, your totals will more than likely be pretty close, but with one destination completed, a low failed destination, and the +10 Asian Explorer bonus, you should edge out the CPU for the win and the trophy.
