These are essentially challenge arenas you can enter to obtain rewards, but you can only access them once you have the corresponding Elemental Vessel.
The first Vessel you get during the course of the game is the Sylphid Boomerang, unlocking

Once you have it, you can go back to the eastern side of the first area of Aery Passage to find a Sylphid Aerie, which is the earliest you can access one.
NOTE: When you have the corresponding Elemental Vessel, any elementite, aeries, or triggers you can now interact with will appear on the map as a blue circle, along with chests, meridians, and other points of interest.
