Each stage of the game has three treasure chests to find. Thankfully, the stages are generally fairly short and the chests are not particularly hidden (in fact, there will often be fireflies to indicate when one is nearby), so a minimal amount of exploring will turn them up during your initial playthrough. Sometimes they are in caves, sometimes they are in enemies (they will be glittering) and sometimes they're just sitting out in the open. If you miss a treasure chest and need to pick it up via stage select, keep in mind that simply going to the stage and collecting it, then quitting back to the hideout WILL NOT work. You must complete the stage again for the chest to register.

The way to collect treasure chests is for the blob to eat them. You must be near the chest as well for the blob to eat them; simply getting the blob close to the chest won't do it (example: you cannot be standing on a ledge above the chest and expect the blob to eat the chest if it is next to it. You must be standing near the chest as well).

If you die after collecting a chest, the chest will still remain collected, so you don't need to worry about any sort of no-death playthroughs. In fact, sometimes it's easier to collect the chest and then die instead of taking the time to get back to the stage checkpoint.

You can see how many chests you've collected by holding down (the jellybean selection button), in the upper right corner. Do not pay attention to the order the chests appear, as they often don't represent a chest's position in the stage, as far as I've been able to tell.
