Fully upgrade the sling

16.3%

How to unlock the Not a toy anymore achievement in A Plague Tale: Innocence - Definitive Guide

This guide is for upgrading the sling. Get to Chapter 10. While it's loading, press and hold cn_back until the chapter is loaded, then wait for a few seconds. Now, hold cn_RB, then highlight an already-crafted upgrade (if you don't have one yet for that row, highlight the locked one to the right. Then, while holding cn_A like you normally would to craft ammunion, quickly select the one you want to craft, then keep holding cn_A and cn_RB until the entire row is upgraded.

Here's a video showing it working:

I take no credit in the making of this video.

NOTE: When I did this on Xbox, I had made it to Chapter 14, then replayed Chapters 10-13 hoping to keep my upgrades. When I reached Chapter 15, my Chapter 10 upgrades were gone.

However, when I did it on PC, I used the glitch to complete the upgrades right when I got to Chapter 10 (through Chapter select obviously), and I was able to keep them for the rest of the game, allowing me to save my precious crafting materials for my weapons.

So try to go for these achievements before completing the chapter.

Thanks so much for this. The achievement was somewhat tedious!
In your instructions I'd suggest changing "Now use the RIGHT joystick to select the an item you can craft from the wheel." I was a bit confused as I had been playing with mouse and keyboard!
Cheers

Is there a reason you have to wait till level 10?

I think it's because there's no actual cut scene. I tried on level 12 (I was on level 13) but couldn't get it to work. Then, on level 14, the upgrades were gone. Not sure why... I had replayed levels 10-12 in their entirety before playing level 13.

Or you can just play through the game and have upgraded it during normal game play smile.

Without going too crazy on ammo creation you can get the sling fully upgraded by around chapter 11/12.

I upgraded other stuff cause I didn’t study the achievements properly. Therefore I end up, at the end of the game, with only 4 leather missing to complete the sling upgrade. cry

Lucky I didn’t have to replay the game, I was able to get it with this glitch. But it took me a few attempts before realizing how this trick actually works.
After you start pressing “A”, you actually have to wait that the craft bar slows downs, before moving above the slots you want to unlock. That’s the signal that the glitch worked and you can start upgrading slots.
Use the d-pad to select the slots you want to upgrade.

I just got it to work on the second go. Some extra details:-

1. Let go of the menu button soon after the level is loaded. Then press and hold rb to have both menus loaded.

2. A KEY detail is that you press a and start holding it on an already upgraded bit of equipment but then quickly use the dpad to select the next locked upgrade whilst still holding A. You should see the speed of the progress bar at the bottom start going slower which means A is now running the "upgrade equipment" action and NOT the "craft ammunition" action.

If anyone is wondering why it doesn’t work for: wait until she stops talking. you need to press and hold RB, then select any ammunition using the right stick, press and hold A and keep pressing RB. Then select to Upgrades you want to have using the left stick while still holding A and RB.

Video was helpful, but had trouble getting it to work.

What worked for me was when I was holding down the buttons to upgrade the item I already unlocked then move the dpad to the item I needed. Clarification below:

Things to know
Only works from chapter select.
Hold menu Down until she starts talking.
Move the left joystick to ensure glitch is working. She should move with the menu up.
Choose an item that you can craft before pressing RB.
Once you have selected the item now press RB. Your normal crafting wheel should display.
It is now safe to let go of menu.
Now use the joystick to select the an item you can craft from the wheel.
Next use the d pad to select an item that you have already unlocked.
Hold down A to begin crafting. While crafting the item that is already unlocked. Move the dpad to the item you actually want before it completes.
You should now be able to move to any other items with the glitch in place.
Do not let go of RB/A.

Took me a while but as soon as I tried moving the Dpad to the item I needed while it was upgrading the original one that was previously unlocked then it worked.

Good luck.

Works as of 2/16/20

Might be fixed now or im doing something wrong, cant keep upgrading. Says already upgraded or not enough materials after i do the first.

Or is it because i play it via game pass?

EDIT: tried again and managed a few before the game crashes

EDIT 2: Managed to do all before the game crashed again. So it works but the game crashes, for me atleast, so you have to be pretty quick and hope it doesn't crash before you're done.

Great tip though! Thanks for the guide!

One question: do you keep all that equipment or can you drop out after the achievement pops and load the chapter and continue? Playing with everything unlocked is lame if you only plan for a single playthrough.

I know people are getting this to work, but even with the previous comments, I still found the instructions a little confusing, and it took me many retries and reading a lot of assorted comments to understand what I needed to do. Here's my attempt at making it as foolproof as possible in one set of instructions.

This assumes that you have enough materials in your inventory to craft one ignifer. If you don't, then replace the word ignifir below with another potion that you do have enough materials to craft.

Steps 1, 6, 7, and 8 are timing-sensitive. Steps 2 through 5 are not.

1. Use chapter select and load Chapter 10. Immediately press and hold the Menu or Back button cn_back on the controller.
2. When the chapter loads, the Crafting menu will appear on the left half of the screen. As Amicia is speaking, and with cn_back still held, press and hold cn_RB. The Crafting menu on the left will be replaced by the Upgrade menu, but meanwhile the Crafting wheel will come up on the HUD on the right.
3. Keep cn_RB held but release cn_back.
4. Use the left joystick cn_LS to select ignifir on the crafting wheel.
5. With cn_RB held, press and hold cn_A to begin crafting an ignifir.
6. While the ignifir is being crafted, quickly use the D-pad to select an upgrade that you need. Keep cn_RB and cn_A held. The crafting progress bar will slow down, and the upgrade will be crafted.
7. Keep cn_RB and cn_A held and use the D-pad to select your next upgrade.
8. Continue thusly until all upgrades have been crafted.

I managed to do it despite having a full inventory. Do the glitch to open the upgrade menu while still having control over Amecia, throw all your crafted ammo, then you can proceed to highlight the upgrades while crafting new ammo.

Continua funcionando!

Glitch still works on both XBOX and Windows as of 9/10/2022 (version: 1.10)

Original text guide and no commentary video here:
A Plague Tale: InnocenceHandfull of pocketsThe Handfull of pockets achievement in A Plague Tale: Innocence worth 71 pointsFully upgrade the equipment

I'm only making this video WITH commentary since I personally had trouble reading and understanding the text tutorial and wanted to actually add commentary talking about how to do it. You can do this glitch very last or during your playthrough, it works every time. This glitch works on selecting Chapter 10 (Chapter X) because there's no cutscene at the beginning of the level.

(Yes I know I'm 3 years late on this game but I loved the game so much even if I only played it recently)

This achievement is for fully upgrading the Sling in one play through, you do NOT need to have the Pocket, Ammunition Bag, Attirail, or any of the alchemy stuff upgraded to factor into this (though it is possible to get them both in a single play through). Avoid crafting any ammunition that requires leather or fabric. Even though you're focusing on the sling, it won't hurt to upgrade your Pocket first (so you aren't leaving materials behind because your stacks are full).

If you missed this on your first shot, a full second play through is not required. Many people recommend starting at chapter 9 and playing on, but in general just explore and scavenge as much as you can.

One important note - starting a mission via chapter selection will start you with the inventory and upgrades you had when you FIRST completed the previous mission. For example, if on your first play through, you raced through Chapter 3 and started Chapter 4 with 1 piece of fabric, then did Chapter Select to re-play Chapter 3, this time ending with 12 fabric - it does not replace your original "state" - if at any point you chose Chapter Select on Chapter 3 again, you're starting with your original 1 fabric. This is the case for any Chapter you select - whatever you started that Chapter with originally is what you'll get.

You can continue replaying the game without any issues, but if know that you didn't do much scavenging on your first run through, either plan on doing chapter selection from an EARLY mission once, and re-playing from that point forward (Chapter 3 is the earliest you start collecting crafting materials), or bite the bullet and start a new save slot.

The glitch works perfectly also on Win 10, but I just need to add something else. You need to select the ammunition that can be crafted more than once such as Ignifer. Then you only need to follow Uznai's instructions and get the jobs done.

WHTphoenix is correct. Whilst you need to move the D-PAD, it is best to move it to the right so it is not on the already upgraded white diamond and causing the crash.

I'm nearing the end of the game, and haven't fully upgraded the sling. I must've wasted too many resources on ammo. Fabric and leather seem seem so hard to find! When I replay chapters, I'll definitely avoid making ammo that needs those two resources…

Where abouts do you find Tools? So far I've only found one, and I'm on Chapter 5. I usually scout around most areas, but I can't find any, so it doesn't look like I'll be upgrading the sling in my first playthrough

By JJR0906 on 25 Jul 2019 14:40
During my 1st play through I didn't manage to get all the upgrades for the sling and equipment, I guess I wasted too much materials on ammo.

I think the tip for doing chapter select after you completed the game, and then start at ch9 again is really good. Doing this I found enough materials to have the sling fully upgraded in ch11. Then restart at ch9 again, and I had equipment fully upgraded in ch12. I think this also depends with what you already upgraded and materials found up to ch9, but I my case it only took a few more chapters after ch9 to do it.

The glitch still works with 1.08.
- While Chapter X is loading press and hold Select button
- Release it once level loaded and menu opened on the right
- Move a little forward using left stick, press and hold RB
- Using right stick select something to craft on the right wheel menu
- Using D-pad select already upgraded white square for the sling
- Press and hold A button to start crafting. Do no release it all the way!
- To start glitch press D-pad in any direction immidiately after first blank square passed. You will notice if glitch works by slowed down upgrade progress bar and previously blanked square became white.
- Do not release A button, navigate using D-pad to upgrade everything the rest
If game crashes it means you did something wrong. Start it again and repeat.

The upgrade function for Amicia's sling is unlocked during Chapter 2 upon a brief tutorial. All six upgrades below are required to fully upgrade the sling.

Strings:

  • Tier 1: Hitting enemies in the head kills them instantly (mandatory upgrade)
  • Tier 2: Reduces the time it takes Amicia to get out and load her sling (7 Salpeter, 4 Fabric, 9 Cord, 1 Tool)
  • Tier 3: The sling no longer makes any noise (10 Salpeter, 6 Fabric, 15 Cord, 1 Tool)

Pouch:

  • Tier 1: Reduces the time required to achieve maximum accuracy of a shot (7 Alcohol, 3 Leather, 1 Tool)
  • Tier 2: Reduces the reloading time of the sling (9 Alcohol, 7 Leather, 4 Cord, 1 Tool)
  • Tier 3: Allows two shots in a row without reloading and recharging (10 Alcohol, 12 Leather, 9 Cord, 1 Tool)

Please refer to "Handfull of pockets" for upgrade tips.

A small life hack. When there is only one improvement left for the sling and you have the materials for it, you do this: Save it to the cloud or flash drive, then fully improve it and get a trophy for the sling, then load it again. This is such a small saving in materials)

There is nothing difficult in obtaining this trophy; you can get a pumped-up sling and pockets in one go without any downloads or glitches, if you carefully inspect the locations. Towards the end, I had already accumulated a supply of leather, fabric and rope (the least amount of leather, you need to be more careful here) which was no longer needed. I didn’t improve alchemy and crafted consumables when necessary, but I can’t say that I limited myself in their use (except for those that required a lot of resources and the game itself warned about this).
