How to unlock the Madness Prevails achievement in Alice: Madness Returns - Definitive Guide

This strategy was discovered by Multitasking on ps3trophies.org.

If you do not want to play through the entire game again on Nightmare or find it too frustrating, you can "cheat" the achievement assuming you have completed the game once already.

Start a New Game + on Nightmare and exit out after the first autosave.
Go to Chapter Select, select the final part of Chapter 1 and complete it.
Play through the beginning of Chapter 2 until the first autosave.
Go to Chapter Select, select the final part of Chapter 2 and complete it.

Repeat the above for every chapter.

I am playing through the game normally on Nightmare so I can't verify, but you likely don't even need to fight the final boss as "The End" checkpoint places you after the fight.

This is a much easier way to get the achievement, but the game is enjoyable enough it's worth another playthrough unless you find this difficulty frustrating.

I wish I'd seen this solution earlier. I like the game, but I don't really like it enough to play through it 2-3 times. I was going to do Nightmare + collectibles, but if this works then I guess I can do collectibles on easy mode.

Does this also unlock the achievement "The Beginning of the End" where you have to play thru Entire Chapter 1 on Nightmare difficulty?

It should give you that achievements as well.

lol that trick definitely worked, yeah, confirmed you also get...
"The Beginning of the End" - Complete Chapter 1 on Nightmare Difficulty (20G)
"Level-Headed" - Finish the game using Hysteria only once (50G)
"The Persistent Flourish" - Complete the Game on Hard (75G)
"Madness Prevails" - Complete the Game on Nightmare (80G)

Make sure you don't skip one like I did LOL. I went through and the last part of each chapter EXCEPT Queensland, so I had to go back and do it all again. Oops! LOL

BTW, when the achievements unlocked did Madness Prevails appear first? It shows that I beat nightmare before hard.

don't worry about it not working, it definitely does still work, i got it 2 minutes ago, and the date is 15/7/11.
so far i haven't had to update this game at all, so im guessing it will probably work for a while yet.
Great game but far too repetitive for me, 'cept card killing, that never gets old.

Awesomeness! 8/25/2011 and it still works! I played through the 1st chapter to get "The Beginning of the End" and was dreading playing the whole game on Nightmare again so I'm glad I check TA first! :)

I wasn't sure if "first save" applied to the "real world" so I just hit 'select' to skip through all the cut scene until I was in 'Wonderland', first save. I did the same for the rest of the chapter. Also, if you have the DLC, I equipped 'Fleshmaiden' which helped defeat the Doll Maker a lot easier lol.

THANKS!!!

If anyone else had problems with not having the option of "Start a new game": Go to the "Chapter Select" option, choose the last part of the last chapter and play that. After that, you got the option "Chapter Select" AND "Start a new game".

Cool, going to do this tonight and then I am going to go through the whole game again for the rest of the achievements on normal. Sometimes these levels can be frustrating on very hard levels but, I loved this game when I first did it on the PC (On release day), and played it on the 360 as well.

What I great series, I hope there is a 3rd one that is being rumored to might actually happen.

Edit: besides me NOT playing this one for well over a year, and got stuck on the very first boss, the reset when smooth with no issues. Worked perfectly still in 2018 so I guess they have no plans on ever fixing this one.

I wonder what other games you can do this with...

Still works - completed game on easy, changed difficulty to nightmare and did chapter select.
THIS DOES NOT WORK....
You have to select New Game + on nightmare then do the chapter select. - You know this works when you get the complete chap 1 on nightmare achievement.
Awesome find btw :)

This absolutely worked and took me ~15 minutes. Before seeing this solution, I had already played through on Normal for 100% completion and then through chapter 1 Nightmare in a New Game (for the chapter 1 Nightmare achievement), so I simply loaded my game to make sure I was in ch 2, quit to main menu, loaded the final area of ch 2, ran through to the end and skipped all cutscenes, and quit to main menu once it had saved for me in ch 3 back in Wonderland (running through the "real world" part). Repeated for each chapter and after skipping the final ch 6 cutscene, achievement popped!
I'll probably play through the rest of Nightmare anyway as this game is wonderful.

4/30/2012 still works. I may have played a littler further into each chapter than needed, but I wanted to make sure I went far enough in.

Now, it's time to really play this on Nightmare and see how far I make it. I enjoyed the hell out of playing this game, even if the story is insanely fucked up, lol.

Great idea, thanks! clap

One issue, not with your tip but my console: Beat this on Normal but when I view the main menu there is no longer a New Game option. It starts right off with "Chapter Select". My cache is cleared. Anyone else seeing this bug?

(P.S. Tried simply selecting the first chapter and playing through again on Nightmare but it doesn't work, you do have to start a New Game.)

id like to no really where he first auto save is really? is it the moment you see the clock thing bottom right corner?

By NICKYG2X3 on 11 Jan 2021 22:49
For those needing further clarification about auto saves, check the bottom right area of your screen. You'll know it auto saves because a pocket watch can be seen quickly ticking. After you see it, thats your cue to press start, go to main menu and go to chapter select to select the final section of that chapter. There's also some cases where after advancing forward as Alice in London, the game will load after a cutscene. This also counts as an auto-save so you can still quit to main menu after any time you see the pocket watch or a loading screen (then load up the last section of that chapter).

After beating the last section of a chapter and being warped back to the real world, you'll normally only need to play through London as Alice for just a brief moment before the auto save or loading screen activates and you can exit to main menu and select the final part of that same chapter again. Repeat until all chapter's are done. You don't even need to fight the final boss using this method. Massive time saver!

It's a 10 year old game and this will likely never be patched so there's actually no need to report it's status but I'm certain people will anyway.

f you have the weapon and dresses DLC - equip Fleshmaiden. This will let you use Hysteria at anytime. Once you get into a battle activate it and hack away. As stated above, your weapon upgrades carry over as well; with the added power of the DLC weapons, it's fairly easy.

21 Jun 2011 23:27

***game mechanics spoiler***

Just a little hint before you attempt this, as it gets tricky later on, beat normal first, you get all your weapons all your upgrades and all your dresses for the next playthrough. Sweet deal eh? it gets better. The dresses you've unlocked now have bonus abilities, for example, the default dress now heals you when you shrink, hardly a bonus to sneeze at! Other than that this plays just like every other difficulty, you just take more damage. Have fun!

Nightmare difficulty is fairly difficult if you don't use New Game+ to keep your upgraded gear. Enemies will have more of health and deal massive amounts of damage per hit so be extremely careful while fighting. Complete all six chapters from start to finish on nightmare difficulty to unlock this achievement.

We advise going for this on after you have beaten the game on easy or normal the first time around and using the glitch (located below) to get this trophy and any other trophy you might not have received yet. The key thing you need to do while going for this trophy is to always use the dodge button (). Doing that will make your body disappear for a short while, but let you dodge all attacks very quickly. Also in this playthrough, you should be able to use the Hysteria anytime you need it, unless you didn't get it on your first playthrough.

The game is fairly easy and can be breezed through without much effort if you have completed the game once before. If you plan to start the game on Nightmare on your first playthrough, I would advise looking into buying the DLC and using one of those Dresses to help aid you in this game. This trophy stacks with the lower difficultly trophies, so the platinum is obtainable in one playthrough.

Alternative Method: Do this if you played the game on a lower difficulty level, Obtained all the collectibles (Memories and Snouts) and want to cut out the second playthrough. Both Guide writers would like to thank the members from this thread for confirming this works: LINK

  1. First start a New Game+
  2. After the first save point (The Clock on the bottom right side is gone). Quit out to the main menu.
  3. Go to chapter select and pick the last section of that chapter. Beat it and let it roll you over to the next chapter. Let it save, and then quit to the main menu (The Beginning of the End should pop).
  4. Repeat step 3 for the next 5 chapters.
  5. In chapter 6 you do not have to fight the last boss. Just choose the last sub chapter in that chapter and walk to the end, The credits will pop and this trophy along with any other difficulty trophies you didn't get. This will also pop Level-Headed, if you didn't use it more than once.

If you want to beat the game at 1000G and you lack the ability to pass the most difficult level, then I advise you to buy the DLC with dresses - this DLC costs a penny, but it gives a huge advantage in the game, for example: double damage with all types of weapons, endless hysteria or loss of teeth instead of HP.
