How to unlock the Hardcore achievement in Army of Two: The 40th Day - Definitive Guide

ok this is not so much a solution for getting the contractor cheevo its more of a solution to help you out trying to get it if its glitched on you ie because of the DLC. Ok so this is what happened to me i ran through the game on normal then stupidly i bought the DLC got those cheevo's then decided to run through on contractor, i got to the end fairly easily but no contractor cheevo popped for me. So this is what i done, i decided to transfer all my game saves and DLC content over to a memory stick, the reason why i done this was just incase it didnt work i could then transfer it back over to my hard drive. Anyhow once i had cleared everything i then started to play through the contractor difficulty again on Co Op with a friend. After going through the first or second checkpoint on the 1st chapter the contractor cheevo popped for me.
Now i wont say this will defo work for everyone that has had this glitch on them but its defo worth a try to save you running through all the game again or even doing the DLC on contractor. So please do not leave negative if this doesnt work for you as i am not a 100% it will but its something you can try as it worked for me strangely enough.

If you need me to run through anything about this solution if i havent explained it very well please send me a message on live but i dont accept random friends request.

If this solution does work for anyone can you please send me a message just to let me know it worked just handy to know feedback

I didn't have this problem, but someone on my LIVE friend list did. I suggested him to try your solution and it perfectly worked. Thanks for him! The achievement popped up at the very beginning of the game, when he learned how to capture an ennemy by behind. Vote +1.

Had this same problem. Got the Softcore achievement but Hardcore never popped. Tried running back through the 2nd half of the campaign plus the two chapters in the DLC on Contractor and still nothing. Rather than trying to do the campaign all over again I decided to try this method. Put all my game saves and DLC on a memory stick and then started the campaign over with no game saves or anything under Army of Two: The 40th Day. The achievement popped right after I got my first checkpoint. This saved me a ton of time! Definitely works, thank you so much!

Yes I think its an important part for this cheev to pop. Transfer over to a memory stick its simple to do and will only take a few mins.

just worked for me. played through the first time in march of 2010. got softcore, but not hardcore. just moved everything over to a flash drive, didn't remove it, and it didn't work. started over and removed the drive, achievement popped while still in the elevator.

This worked well for me also. I finished the first 4 missions in split screen with a friend and finished the rest with an AI partner because I was having trouble working with him, but when I got to the end, it didn't pop. I was pretty sure it was because I downloaded the DLC and needed to complete Missions 8 & 9 before getting the achievement, but I decided to try this method first because it seems like it'd bypass the DLC missions. It definitely worked. I'm guessing it's because the Xbox couldn't find the DLC files. Pretty awesome.

This worked for me on single player.
I followed all the instructions above but played single player instead of co-op.
My achievement popped in the first level right after coming out of the elevator.

Thanks again. This saved me a ton of time. This is what this site is all about!!!!

***FOR EVERYONE WHO HAS DOWNLOADED THE NEW DLC***

If you have not unlocked Hardcore before you have downloaded the Chapters of Deceit DLC, you will likely find that this achievement will not pop when it should (at the end of Chapter 7, assuming you started from the beginning on Contractor).

Do not worry, you CAN still get the achievement (it is not glitched).

To unlock it, you must complete all of the regular game on Contractor (Chapters 1 to 7), as well as completing both of the DLC chapters on Contractor (Chapters 8 and 9). If you have completed all of the levels in order, Hardcore will unlock at the end of Chapter 9 on Contractor.

I had to go through Contractor twice before I figured out to try the DLC, but it worked.

*** I assume a patch may fix this issue, but until then I hope this helps those who are having the same issue. ***

Do you have to do the missions in order? I did 1-7 and it didn't pop so I went back and I'm on mission 4 right now. Can I skip ahead and do 8 and 9?

You SHOULD be able to do the missions in any order to get it to pop... but with EA you never know.

They are on the far right of the chapter select menu, as long as you have the DLC downloaded.

A few words of warning if you're going after this: Make sure you don't start another game (even in another slot), change players or switch your existing game between solo and co-op play until this is awarded. A friend and I went through the entire game on Contractor (which was very frustrating, particularly towards the end) and while the Softcore achievement for the halfway mark did unlock, this didn't. At one point, I started another save to try out different guns and this is what we theorise broke the achievement. The game will not tell you or warn you ahead of time that these things will break the achievement.

UPDATE: The game does in fact remember what checkpoints you have completed on Contractor if you start levels over again. I started playing from the halfway point in single player and midway during the second last level, the achievement popped. Unfortunately, the game won't tell you which checkpoints you're missing but if you have the Softcore achievement, you can start from the zoo mission. Wifelikedrip also pointed out that if you make only negative moral choices in the game, it apparently makes it easier, though I haven't tested this myself.

You should add in there that making negative choices makes the game easier.

Does it? I thought some positive were better and some negative were better. That's good to know.

I recommend to play every chapter in one sitting (if you're playing in splitscreen). What I mean is - if you want to turn off the console finish the current episode. We turned off the console in the middle of hospital episode and then again in the last episode. I got the achievement (player 1) but my girlfriend didn't. We repeated the last mission and then 4th episode and when we reached the area when you can get access to Wu's weapon stash she got the achievement (and that's the place we stopped playing and turned off the console the other day). I recall we had similar problems with Gears of War II coop achievement.

This achievement is somehow glitched. I played with my friend on contractor difficulty. We took a break in the middle of the game, right after the load of another chapter. When we finished the game, no achievement popped. We almost destroyed our console, it was rough for us. So, angry as hell, we finished the game again in one session and then we got the achievement. It's really weird.

I figured I would add my experience to this guide as the other guides address DLC issues.

I started the game couch coop the other profile being local only, I had not downloaded the DLC and I followed this guides suggestion of never starting a new game, changing to solo, or changing player(I was always Rios) while attempting the achievement. I also was trying to follow Yuhans suggestion of never quitting mid chapter. Each time we started up the game i signed in the other profile selected local coop and selected continue.

First time we played only made it through chapter one, quit out to the main menu after the second chapter loaded enough for us to move.
Second time we played until the start of chapter five, ran around the beginning and died twice(never hit a checkpoint) quit out to the main menu
Third time we played until mid/late chapter six where you kill the 3 enemies prompting the helicopter crash scene. When that scene attempted to load the game froze...... I had to restart the xbox and chose to continue. We ended up getting halfway through the final chapter, where you open a door their are two enemies facing away from you and a temporarily unmanned machine gun right before the step jump over the chain link fence to where "guys on the roof are helping". My coop partner was then too drunk to continue at that point so we had to quit out to the main menu.
Fourth time we selected continue and finished the game. Both profiles got the achievement.

Thanks for the guide!
TLDR: follow the suggestion of never starting a new game, changing to solo, or switching player

As it states, complete the game on the hardest difficulty - Contractor. Here are some useful tips. All four of the directional buttons gives a unique command to your partner. Use these commands to your advantage and tactfully go through each of the level. The directional button orders your partner to advance as in move forward, towards the enemies, the directional button orders your partner to regroup with you. The enables you see what your partner sees. This can be very useful while sniping or when he is in trouble as you'll know where the enemies are. The directional button orders your partner to hold his position, as in he'll stay in one place unless and until you order him to advance. Covering near objects is vital. To cover simply walk towards an object and stop moving. Your character will automatically take cover. Crouching is also important. To crouch press To put it to perspective, playing on the hardest difficulty in this game is a lot like playing Call of Duty: World at War on hard. What I'm trying to say is that it is not too difficult, just frustrating sometimes.

Here's a list of all the more armored or special enemies and how to defeat them.

1. Heavily armored shotgun enemies
-To defeat them, go for the head. Once you shoot his head enough, his helmet will pop off and a few more shots to the head will kill him
2. Heavily armored grenade launcher enemies
-To defeat them , you have to shoot at the ammo packs they are carrying. As the packs contain grenade (for their grenade launchers), when you shoot them they will explode and cause significant damage to him. I believe there are 3 ammo packs and you have to shoot all of them.
3. Heavily armored flamethrower enemies
-To defeat them, shoot the gas tanks on their backs. This will cause them to explode and will cause significant damage to them. There is only one gas tank on his back and it's not too easy to penetrate it. You have to flank around him till you have a clear shot at the gas tank on his back. Once you have a clear shot, go crazy with either your shotgun or your machine gun. After the tank has been destroyed he'll be dead.
4. Heavily armored gatling gun enemies
-To defeat them, you have to shoot their backpacks which carries the gatling gun ammo. Let your partner take all the aggro or attention and flank around the enemy until you have a clear shot at the backpack. Unload one magazine's worth of machine gun bullets on it until it explodes. He's dead now.

This achievement is awarded after you complete the game on Contractor difficulty. If you're playing co-op, both players need to be on Contractor difficulty.
