How to unlock the Hardened War Hero achievement in Call of Duty: World at War - Definitive Guide
This achievement generally comes with playing through the game on veteran, although if you play through on hardened you will still get this, you'll just miss out on the numerous 30 point achievements for completing the missions on veteran. It's recommended that you play through on veteran, however if you get stuck on a mission or two (I got stuck on Heart of the Reich), you can do those on hardened and still get a good gamerscore.
A few things to remember when playing on Veteran/Hardened:
1: Throw grenades back when they are close to you! Grenades have an abnormally long fuse time, so take the time to locate it and toss it back. Only throw it back when the grenade indicator is not transparent (i.e. it's near your feet).
2: Cook your grenades! If you don't cook your grenades at all, the enemy will just simply toss it back at you, and the odds are that it'll be perfectly cooked and will blow up in your face.
3: Take cover! This is a given, but if you do not take cover, you will die. Stay on cover at all times, only moving out to either avoid a grenade or to proceed with the mission. When shooting from cover, take the few shots you need to take and duck right back down.
4: Take your time! Veteran will take 2-5 times what it'd take you to complete the same mission on recruit. Proceed slowly until you get your next checkpoint.
5: Don't rely on your squad! The squad AI is essentially worthless, and you can't rely on them to do much of anything, as much as you'd like to. They are good for bullet sponges though.
6: Don't get frustrated! If you get angry, you'll get impatient and you'll wind up taking much longer to complete the mission IF you do complete it at all. Take your time, and if you get angry, go play Uno or something to calm down.
7: Find a video of what mission you're on! It'll help tons.
Good luck!
The ultimate Suck. Took a while.
Few years ago, i had the same problem as you guys, that my skulls was'nt saving even if i replay the missing missions and completed the game on a single run on hardened. This solution is simillar for other games that has the save attach to their profile.
This is how I did but i can't guarranty that this will work for you, well it worked for my friend Hakbond.
All you will need is luck and a USB drive
1. Go in you storage and delete you save in Call of duty - World at War folder.
2. Transfer your Gamertag on a USB drive
3. Set your 360 to auto sign-in on your gamertag (if it's not already done)
4. Set your 360 to load from DISK when you start it.
5. Put Call of duty - World at War in 360.
6. Turn off 360.
7. Turn on 360.
8. Turn on controller if you have not already done so.
9. When the game load up and you see ''Call of duty - World at War LOADING... '' , pull out the USB drive
10. You should be sing-in with your gamertag and if you go to your achievements it should show 0G. Don't worry.
11. Go in mission select and now you can see what you want, ALL PROGRESS HAS BEEN ERASED !!
12. Plug back in your USB drive with your gamertag.
13. Hit Xbox button and hit sing-in to Xbox Live. Now your gamerscore is back to normal without your old progress.
14. You should not be redirect to start screen and now you can do a all new fresh campaing on Hardened woohoo !!
Go ahead soldiers and get this done :D
Sorry for my bad english i'm french.
Thx
The Achievement requires you to beat the game on Hardened Difficulty OR HIGHER. That means if you beat half the game on Hardened and half on Veteran you'll get the achievement. To know what difficulty you've beaten a mission on, at the mission select screen when you scroll over a mission, on the bottom below the description they will show a little picture. Skull = Veteran completed. Screaming guy = Hardened. Man with hat = Normal. Woman with hat = Recruit.
Hope this helped and good luck!
1. Check points are your friend on Veteran, learn where the checkpoints are. Or in some cases what activates them
2. Cover is your friend, when you have them think of smoke grenades as a mobile cover
3. sprinting is your friend, you will need to master this to avoid the multitude of grenades thrown at you. and to sprint to the next checkpoint.
4. taking the prone position will not only make it harder to hit you but makes shots more accurate
5. at times of infinite enemies this will be the case until you hit the next checkpoint.
6. if you keep trying the same thing and you get slaughtered over and over try something different
One way to "bypass" the Veteran difficulty while still getting the achievements is to do the following:
1. load up any desired mission from the beginning, and select Veteran difficulty
2. play until you get the first checkpoint
3. save and quit
4. select desired mission again, but this time choose Recruit difficulty
5. when the loading bar gets about half way, exit to dashboard, and fully quit the game
6. start the game up again, and select resume game
this process tricks the enemy AI into playing on Recruit difficulty, while still giving you credit for Veteran. you will still get the achievements for completing missions and the game on Veteran, but it will make it so much easier. keep in mind that your health and recovery will still be on Veteran, so you can still die quickly if caught in the wrong situation.
hope this helps anyone who needs it!
1) USE COVER!!!:
This is the golden rule of playing through on Veteran. Without it, you will be killed in seconds. Stay crouched/prone, pop up for a couple of seconds to fire off some rounds, then immediately drop back down and reload. This leads me into my next tip...
2) Aim assist is your friend, but it is for just that, assisting:
This feature is extremely helpful for locating enemies, especially in darker portions or when you're finishing up clearing an area. Just spam the aim button to lock onto the general area of an enemy, then adjust your aim and take your shots.
3) Enemies spawn infinitely:
Remember this. The only way to stop them from spawning is to progress forwards until the spawnpoint is triggered to do so. Of course you still need to work on clearing out an area to advance, but if you find yourself fighting at a location for a long period of time, try to move up. This one of several annoying characteristics about this game's harder difficulty settings. Another one is...
4) Do not rely on your squad mates:
They hardly do any work and will often block you out of useful cover points. The most helpful thing they can do is let you know when you can move on, although most of the time they do this you already have a good handle on the situation. One of the most frustrating parts of this game is that enemies focus solely on YOU. Banzai chargers will run right past your entire squad just to attack you and enemies will ignore allies out of cover to shoot at you 100 yards downfield.
5) Grenade spamming:
Probably the aspect of this playthrough that will set you off more frequently than any other. The AI doesn't get smarter in this game, it just gets cheaper. There will be many occasions where you are maybe 50 yards or so downfield from the enemy and will suddenly find yourself surrounded by multiple perfectly thrown grenades that mean instant death if you don't move immediately. On Veteran, grenades will automatically kill you the majority of the time. If the indicator is solid that means it is nearby and I would recommend trying to through it back if you feel comfortable doing so. Any indicators that are partially transparent are farther a way and extremely likely to detonate before you can throw them away so I would recommend moving until the icon vanishes.
6) Regarding your own grenade usage:
On this difficulty you need to have perfected the art of grenade cooking. If you just throw it downfield the enemy will either run out of its blast radius or throw it right back. Also, don't worry about stockpiling your grenades, as there are plenty of them lying around the battlefield.
7) Weapon choice:
Above all else choose weapons that you are comfortable with, although I would recommend that you avoid all pistols, shotguns, and the flamethrower (except for unique circumstances; i.e. Burn 'em Out). I personally played through a large part of the game with one rifle (M1 Garand, Gewehr, PTRS) for long range and an automatic weapon (Type 100, MP40) for midrange to close quarters. This gives you weapons to handle all scenarios. Be sure that to choose weapons that suit the level you are playing. For example on Vendetta I played through a good portion with the Springfield and the PTRS since you will be sniping for the most part.
8) Practice beforehand:
Obviously I would highly recommend beating the game on Regular before attempting it on Veteran. Also, play through each level individually just before you play it on Veteran. This will give you an idea about what you have to do, where enemies come from, and what weapons you will encounter.
9) Take your time:
This should be a given but its important enough to stress again. Playing through levels on Veteran will take MUCH longer than they do on lower difficulty settings, so plan accordingly.
10) Don't be afraid to change tactics:
If you get stuck on an area, do something different. Take a different route, use different weapons, or play more aggressively. Checkpoints are perfect for attempting to just clear an area as quickly as you can.
11) Don't be discouraged if you have trouble:
This mode is extremely difficult. You will have periods when you wish to throw your controller through the TV. When this happens, pause the game, put it down and take a break. Eat something, watch TV, go on the computer, anything to calm yourself down. When you get angry, your play will suffer.
12) Remember you get a trophy for beating the game on HARDENED:
If you are REALLY having difficulty with a mission and don't think you'll be able to beat it on Veteran, lower the difficulty to at least earn Hardened War Hero.
That's all the advice I have for now, but I'll be sure to add tips as I continue my own Veteran playthrough. Feel free to comment or message me with any questions or additional info you think should be added.
Finish up to, and including, Downfall on Hardened or Veteran. Also refer to Bearing the Burden for veteran tips. Congratulations on finishing on Hardened/Veteran.
This trophy is glitched and this is what legndorock has to say about it:
"To unlock Hardened War Hero you must have beaten the game on Hardened or Veteran difficulty. Be aware though that even if you've completed the game on Veteran and even have all the trophies to prove it there must be a Hardened or Veteran level skull under the level when you go into the mission select screen. A glitch occurs that erases all of your story progress when you do things like buy the map packs for the game. If this has happened to you just go back and complete the levels on Hardened difficulty to get this trophy. the levels will seem almost too easy compared to Veteran so don't worry about it".
Secondly , you can almost always hear a Fritz or Japanese preparing to throw a grenade. (something like Granaten!) If a grenade has already arrived at your cover, then only if the message “Tap to throw a grenade” appears, throw it away. In all other cases, either change the cover, or an ally will do everything for you, but bots don’t do this too often, in half the cases they start to run away, and after running a couple of meters, run back (they don’t give a damn about enemy bullets and grenades).
Thirdly , and very important, ideally you should spend 90-95% of your entire playthrough on Veteran in cover. It is advisable to lie down, as you will be hit if you squat. You can throw grenades, but it’s better to do it 1-1.5 seconds after you take it out, because enemies throw them away quite successfully.
Fourthly , always follow your bot allies, do not overtake them, this will definitely not bring any benefit. Sometimes you can hide behind them.
Fifth , use only automatic weapons! Forget about rifles, pistols, only machine guns and submachine guns! In missions for the USA, use Type 100, Thompson or Browning, in missions for the USSR - PPSh, MP40, FG42, MG42 (and in the last missions also Stg 44).
