How to unlock the Pack Rat achievement in Castlevania: Harmony of Despair - Definitive Guide

The other post was removed so im updating mine to reflect that.

This achievement only requires you to obtain 300 different items in your item compendium. You DO NOT have to have all 300 on hand so sell them for gold if you want to help you get the million gold achievement faster as you will need the gold to buy some extra items to help you get too the 300 item mark. Before i got the achieve i had sold a bunch of items. I got scared that i may need to keep them on hand so i stopped selling. When the achievement popped i had exactly 247 items in my inventory and 314 items in my compendium. Im not sure what doesnt count but since my compendium was at 314 im guessing some sort of magic or soul items with the magic users didn't count. If anyone can shed light on what doesnt count please post here and let others know.

To speed up the achievement progress i recomend you use multiple characters to get items that other characters cant get. I got around 260 items in my compendium from using Alucard alone. It may also be possible you dont have to use others characters its your choice. After i got a ton of items with alucard i had a friend run me through each chapter with the different characters on each difficulty so i could grab stuff i didn't have. I also went through after i got the 1,000,000 gold achieve and bought any items in the shop that had a 0 by it wether or not i knew that i had purchased it before to be safe.

I counted my items down in the compendium a few times over the course of my play. Going in the compendium and counting down each column is the only way to keep a total of your compendium items.

If you feel any info here is inaccurate please let me know. Also i apologize to the other guy who posted his soloution. I just felt more time should of been involved in checking the facts. I hope this helps someone.

...and two other people didn't get the achievement until they had 300 items in their inventory. Check the comments under the other solution.

thats all fine and good. my point is how does someone go create a soloution to and achievement that doesnt even have the achievement. i know of at least 3 people myself included who sold a lot of items and only had 200-250 on hand and it popped when we had around 315 in our compendium.

agreed littlejay. 2 more of my friends got it just a bit ago with less than 10 items in their inventory. im not trying to say im right or start trouble im just saying know the facts before you write a guide like the day the game come out.

I just got the achievement today, and I can confirm that the items do not need to be on hand.

I had 308 items in my compendium at the time it popped, which leads me to believe that the items that are already in there from the start of the game do not count unless you have collected it in game (Since I have only used Soma and Charlotte).

I completely agree with jeffy x360a about people writing guides when they haven't even got the achievement. Thnx, to everyone that commented on here about the items on hand, very helpful.

Thanks bro, worked like a charm. U don't need it to be on hand (c'mon how can u dispute this solution when people clearly have gotten it without 300+ items on hand). I personally had 310 or so b4 i went out of my way to get some Jonathon and Shinoa and Charlotte spells/martial arts/glyphs whatever, after about 5 or 6 i got the achievement. I had about 200 items in my inventory at the time.

Ha! Just came here to fix this solution (i.e. replace the incorrect one), but you beat me too it. (I don't have the 'chievement yet, but it popped for a friend of mine earlier today).

I would just like to add that you can get this achievement while in the shop. I checked through my compendium and noticed I had about 300-310 items in there, but the achievement hadn't popped yet. So I went into the shop and bought one of each item I didn't have.

Low and behold it popped on my 2nd to last item, after spending about 250k. Then I dashboarded to get my money back. Not entirely a great way to get the achievement if you're just going to play all the characters anyway, but I really wanted that achievement! :)

Over 300 as well, I'm assuming the magic spells for Charlotte dont work, as well as Jonathan ability scrolls, and possibly Sanoas Glyphs, when mine pops I'll try and find out what didn't count and report back.

Well, I can confirm collecting spells with Charlotte counts towards the 300. Absorbed Acidic Bubbles and the achievement popped. Will look over what I have later...

164 items in inventory, 301 in compendium. Or am I not supposed to count potions?

Collect a few more items and it should pop, start collecting spells with Charlotte if you haven't already. Potions should count

Beat a whole level with charlotte and no spells. You get them like you get souls with soma right? This achievement is the worst in the game. it ruins the fun!

If you plan to play this game a lot and just enjoy it, don't bother with this achievement, it will pop naturally over the course of the game if you use more than one character.

But if you want to speed up the process and get it as soon as possible, here are a few tips that may help :

- Using multiple characters help as there are items that some chars can or can't use, and chars can't drop items they can't use. So you'll get different items using various characters.

- About that : male characters and female characters have many specific armors for them, so use at least one of each. Whip users share pretty much everything, so you don't need to use more than one. Soma has the most unique weapons of all characters, and he can also collect souls from every ennemy in the game, so he is easily the best character to use to go for this achievement.

- Remember to buy one of each items from the shop, most of them don't drop anywhere, so it's all good. There is also an hidden item in each stage that you can get with anyone if you know what you're doing. They are easy to collect and count toward your compendium. Here is a link to a wonderfull and illustrated FAQ for them.
credit to Paul Acevedo, aka segacon from IGN, for the guide.

- Hard mode has virtually an entirelly new inventory, so once you've spent enough time on Normal and can't get new items any more, start playing Hard Mode.

- Pretty much the same goes for DLC chapters, specially the last two. If you don't mind spending extra bucks in the game, go for those two 8-bit levels, they are less expensive and got many new Retro items. Be warned as they are really harder than the main game, even in Normal.

- Knowing all of the above, the last important thing is : when someone open a chest in Co-op multiplayer mode, everyone get an item from it. So if you want to go as fast as possible, play exclusively online 6 players map and most of the job will be done by other players. It will not makes you better at the game, but you will get the achievement in no time.

"Soma has more unique weapons than Alucard, and he can also collect souls from every ennemy in the game (it is not confirmed if souls count toward the achievement though)."

I can confirm this as I just got the achievement on a soul.

Collect 300+ different items. All 300+ items do not have to be in your inventory at the same time. As long as you have the item recorded in your Item Compendium, you don't have to keep it. Items, weapons, shields, spells, sub-weapons, Martial Arts, armor, etc. all count towards this. Each character has specific weapons or spells that can only be obtained by that character, so be sure to play as each one. The trophy should unlock somewhere around 320 items or so.

I just wanted to share a couple of sites I used to help me track down some of these items due to there being some locked behind having to play certain characters, the different difficulties, chapters and whatnot.

https://castlevania.fandom.com/wiki/Harmony_of_Despair_Inven...

You can use this wiki to see every single item in the game. You can use this list to try to look for an item you do not have and also if you need a specific character for the item to drop. I find some items that you get from chests on the stage, such as Cutall for example, they don't really tell you what chapter/difficulty to be playing on. So this is where the other site comes in;

http://www.harmonyofdespair.com/chapters/

You can select a chapter, hit Ctrl+F, and search the item you are looking for to see if it is on that chapter. This site has a page for each chapter and when you click on it will pull up a page with the map showing all the chests, and below that it will have a drop table for each type of chest and the difficulty. So you can use this to find which chapter/difficulty you need to be on and which type of chest you need to be opening to find the item, although it may be more useful to just open them all regardless as you may get some other items you don't have along the way. I just liked knowing for sure where I could find at least one new item so I wasn't wasting my time.

All credit goes to any people that contributed information to the list of the wiki page and Carlmundo for creating the loot table website, as well as firedraco2 whom Carlmundo got the loot information from to go about making the site.

Go online and run for a while on any quests with companions without selling loot.

You need to collect more than 300 unique items (the original equipment does not count).

There is no need to keep 300 items in your inventory; everything that is recorded in the Item Compendium (except for starting items) counts. DLC items (from DLC cards) count towards the count. The souls collected by Soma count towards the count (and there are many unique ones).

I don’t know about the 300 unique items, as written above, I got it with a little more than 100 on board. The list included unique and regular loot. I only played with two characters, on both difficulty levels (game difficulty affects loot). When I was buying the last things for the second pepper at the store, they gave me this trophy.

There are three classes of equipment, it is enough to play with two characters - any female (Shanoa is preferable) and Soma/Alucard to cover almost the entire set of equipment in the game:
1) Whip characters - Julius, Jonathan, Simon, Richter.
They have joint items with minor exceptions from dlc. They can be neglected if there is no dls.
2) Soma, Alucard - additionally have one set of attack equipment, inaccessible to Whip characters
3) Shanoa, Charlotte, Yoko, Maria - women's equipment, inaccessible to others.
________________
4) Fuma is an exceptional character, unfortunately I don’t know much about him.

DLS has some unique items, but for the trophy there is no need to purchase them
