This will happend quite quickly and naturally during the game. My suggestion is to upgrade strength, speed and health (in that order) first. Upgrade strength to a level where you can one-shot the smaller enemies, then speed and (since speed's cost increase the quickest) health. A high speed allows you to not have to use dodge all the time an safe your dodge for more dangerous situations.
