How to unlock the Covenant: Darkwraith achievement in Dark Souls - Definitive Guide

This is just a clarification to Rollie's guide;

Ring the first bell
Ring the second bell (unlocks Sen's Fortress)
Go to Darkroot Garden and defeat Sif to obtain the Covenant of Artorias (necessary to enter the Abyss)
Pass through Sen's Fortress to Anor Londo
Defeat Smough & Ornstein at the end of Anor Londo to acquire the Lordvessel
- don't talk to Frampt, the serpent at Firelink shrine after this point -
Go to New Londo Ruins, find Ingward and he will give you the key to the Abyss
Enter the Abyss, defeat the 4 kings boss.
Another serpent (Kaathe) will appear, and take you to the Firelink altar. Speak to him again after placing the Lordvessel on the altar, and he will offer the covenant.

It is not necessary to place the Lordvessel on the altar to join the covenant. After defeating the 4 kings boss, talk to Kaathe and he will return you to Firelink Shrine. Now go back to the 4 kings boss, and talk to him here, he will allow you to join the covenant. Now go and talk to Frampt and place the Lordvessel for him. This way you can both join the covenant and be allowed to trade titanite with Frampt.

I was confused about the covenant after I beat 4 Kings - what happens, as the solution partly says, is you answer "Yes" but then you are taken to place the lord vessel. Don't warp from the lord vessel though, go back to Kaathe and talk to him, and he'll take you back to the Abyss. THEN speak to him and he'll tell you about the covenant and you can say YES again (or no). Then the achieve pops after he tells you about it.

Thanks OlavTS & Shadow XBL for the better alternative. But you can not just talk to Kaathe to leave, he will repeat "What are you waiting for, place the lordvessel." so I used a wayward bone, that is the way to leave the firelink shrine area without placing the lordvessel and warp back to the abyss to talk to him about the covenant.

Note: You can get this achievement BEFORE aquiring the lordvessel (which means you don't have to face O&S if you don't want to!). You just need to aquire the ring of artorias by defeating Sif. You can access Sif anytime via the ladder near the hydra in darkroot basin or the sealed door in the darkroot garden (needs seal for 20,000 souls from the blacksmith near the entrance to Sen's Fortress).

Once you have the ring. Go to New Londo and kill the keeper (red guy on the roof). He will drop the key to the seal (the key he normally gives you if you posess the lordvessel) and you can then access the 4 kings as normal and once you defeat them you can get this achievement.

Good guide and all... But I like how you sound like Smough and Ornstien are tougher than the Four Kings.

This saved me alot of time since this was my last achievement. Was able to rush to the Five Kings in about 40ish minutes on NG++.

In order to get the chance to join the Darkwraith covenant, you need to make sure you never speak to Kingseeker Frampt after obtaining the Lordvessel. If you do, he'll automatically take you to Firelink altar, where you'll have no choice but to place it on the altar. As long as the Lordvessel is still in your inventory when you defeat the four kings at the bottom of New Londo, you'll meet the other primordial serpent, Darkstalker Kaathe, who will give you the chance to join the covenant if you agree to side with him. If you don't, he'll leave and never return, locking out the covenant for that run of the game.

I accidentally talked to Frampt first and still got this achievement. I had to use a Homeword Bone from the Firelink Altar, but I'm sure the spell with a similar effect would work as well.

So the important thing is NOT placing the Lordvessel on the altar... got it. Usually, when you speak with Framp and reach the altar room, the serpent won't let you get back out till you drop the vessel. Using a homeward bone, or the spell, get around this. Smart! ;-D

My question would be: In order to unlock those "orange fog doors" I'd need to talk to Frampt and place the Vessel.
In order to join the covenant I MUST NOT place the Vessel?

So am I right when I say, wheter I go for the four kings first after obtaining the Lordvessel and join the covenant or I won't be able to get access to the Duke's Archives, the final part of the Tomb Of Giants nor the final part of the Demon Ruins??

HolyMoses81, nope. You place the lordvessel no matter what you choose. I don't want to write any spoilers so I'll just say that there is an oppurtunity to place it even if you don't talk to fraampt and go for this achievement. Even if you mess that up (which you won't if you don't select no during the event after defeating the 4 kings) you can always roll into the hole where fraampt was and place it.

Just an fyi for anyone trying to join this covenant. You do not have to get the lordvessel before talking to Kaathe. You can get the ring and then go straight to the four kings. After the battle he will still appear and offer to let you join.

From the Dark Souls WikiDot. While the other guides offer good explanations on how to join the covenant as intended, they do not discuss how you can get the achievement (and join the covenant to get the Dark Hand weapon) without committing yourself to Darkstalker Kathe for the playthrough.
http://darksouls.wikidot.com/darkwraith

Steps

1) Acquire the Covenant of Artorias.
2) Acquire the Lordvessel, but don't go to Kingseeker Frampt.
3) Talk to Ingward to gain Key to the Seal.
4) Open the floodgate
5) Proceed to fight The Four Kings in The Abyss. You need to equip the Covenant of Artorias.
6) Talk to Darkstalker Kaathe, he'll take you to Firelink Altar.
7a) Put the Lordvessel at the altar, then talk to Kaathe to warp back to The Abyss. This will make Kingseeker Frampt leave for the current playthrough.
7b) Use a Homeward Bone or Homeward back to The Abyss bonfire.
8) Talk to Darkstalker Kaathe again, he'll offer to let you join the covenant.
9b) Talk to Kingseeker Frampt and place the Lordvessel on the Alter. Darkstalker Kaathe will leave for the playthrough. You will not lose rank in the Darkwraith Covenant and if you ranked up to receive the Red Eye Orb you will be able to continue using it (unless, I think, you leave Darkwraith via the guy in the belltower or join another).

Darkwraith is the truly evil covenant of the game and its main focus is on invading another player's worlds and killing them to acquire humanity.

How to Join:

WARNING: After obtaining the Lord Vessel, don't talk to Framp in the Fire link shire. Instead, go to New Londor and defeat the 4 Kings. If you place the Lord Vessel, you will void the trophy and need to do it again on NG+

To join you need to speak to the big Primordial Serpent NPC Darkstalker Kaathe. It looks just like Frampt who appears in Firelink Shrine however this one wishes to engulf the world in darkness. It is located in the Abyss and appears as soon as you defeat The Four Kings boss fight if you have met the requirements.

  • First of all you'll need the Covenant of Artorias ring, which is your reward for beating the boss Great Gray Wolf Sif and allows you to access the Abyss.
  • If you still haven't acquired the Lordvessel: Go to New Londo Ruins and find the NPC Ingward. Kill him and take the key to the seal, release it and reach the Abyss entrance. After killing the Four Kings just speak to the serpent Kaathe and join the covenant.
  • If you have already acquired the Lordvessel: Do NOT speak to the Primordial Serpent Frampt (in a hole in Firelink Shrine). Go to New Londo Ruins and speak to the NPC Ingward. He gives you the key to the seal, use it to release it and reach the Abyss entrance. After killing the Four Kings just speak to the serpent Kaathe and join the covenant.
  • You can speak to Frampt all you want before acquiring the Lordvessel.

Rewards for Joining/Ranking Up:
Upon joining you'll receive the weapon/shield Dark Hand and will also be able to purchase Cracked Red Eye Orbs with Kaathe. To upgrade your rank in this covenant you need to offer a sacrifice of (banked) humanities to the Primordial Serpent Kaathe.

Covenant Ranks:

  • Offering 10 humanities upgrades you to rank+1 and gives you the Red Eye Orb, which allows you to invade other people games indefinitely as long as you are still in the covenant.
  • Offering 30 humanities upgrades you to rank+2 and you are rewarded with the Dark Sword and the Dark Armor Set. These are NOT needed for the weapons trophy
  • Offering 85 humanities upgrades you to rank+3 and the Dark Hand secondary attack drains more humanity

Other Notes:
The Dark Hand's secondary attack is used to drain humanity from human enemies or NPCs when equipped in the right hand and works as a black-hole type of shield when equipped in the left hand.
