How to unlock the Ring the Bell (Undead Church) achievement in Dark Souls - Definitive Guide

To try and keep from giving away any spoilers this is going to be incredibly vague and only name cities. This is to prevent said spoilers and to keep you surprised at what happens in the game as intended.

This achievement is acquired after you work your way through both Undead Burg and Undead Parish. To get to it when you are in the first little hub, Firelink Shrine you have to take the large set of stairs along the cliffside up towards the bridge.

You will encounter two bosses along the way. One in Undead Burg and then the second right before the bell tower in Undead Parish. Once you defeat the second boss climb up the tower and pull a level to sound the bell. A cutscene will play showing the ringing bell and the beautiful terrain and the achievement will unlock.

To handle to coming challenge I highly suggest buying a repair kit from the merchant in Undead Burg, once you get to the rooftop where you have an archer shooting at you there is a set of stairs to the right guarded by two spearmen. Once you kill them go down and he is through the doorway that leads outside. The repair kit costs 3000 souls but in the long run is worth much more than the asking price.

If you get even this far congratulations. This alone really is an achievement in itself.

Make sure after you ring the bell that you do not attack the super creepy guy who shows up at the base of the belfry--he is an NPC with some very helpful services and NOT a creeperton monster man.

So where to go after this?

Note to self, after this you have to go the opposite side of the Hellkite dragon and open the door there with the just obtained basement key, or grind 20.000 souls and buy the seal from the blacksmith and grind a bit first.

Personally I completely skipped past the second boss - using the stairs on the right of the bridge (If your on the bridge, teh 2nd boss is who i see directly ahead - The second boss might be someone entirely different who I've not met yet).

From the stairs I go down, long the underside of the bridge, fight a different "boss" type creature, and continue downwards.... with some clever fighting/escaping I managed to get all the way down to to the blacksmith!

I'm afraid that that creature you see on the bridge is not the second boss mentioned in the solution... You've got some way to go yet...

You're right, the solution is incredibly vague. Put the "spoilers" in the spoiler boxes. That way, everyone is happy.

I don't care for spoilers much. Especially in this game where it seems unlikely I'll spend much time on it.

This guide is more focused on the actual boss battle, there may be some slight spoilers here, especially if you want to be surprised by the bosses.

Right before you get this acheivement, you must fight two huge gargoyles. While it is possible to take on by yourself, the easiest way to defeat these monsters is to summon the phantom of the knight, Solaire of Astora. Solaire will then be able to distract one of the beasts while you take care of it's twin.

To summon, you must have met Solaire in the Undead Burg and received the White Summon Soapstone. Once you get to the Undead Church, use a humanity to reverse hollowing at a bonfire, and then climb to the top of the church. Right before crossing through the white mist, there will be a marker on the floor to summon Solaire.

Other than that, this is a fairly straight forward fight. They seem to be weak against lightning and have a fire breath attack, so come prepared.

Solaire is great in this fight. He not only distracts both gargoyles but does major damage to them. I hardly had to do anything to win this battle.

Or use a Gold Pine Resin to give your weapon lightning bonus damage. They don't "seem" to be weak to lightning, they're extremely weak to it. With one Gold Pine Resin, you can kill each Gargoyle in 4-7 hits depending on your weapon and the kind of hit - but still, 7 hits and they'll drop dead like yesterday's... dead thing.

To make it even easier, you can also summon Lautrec for this fight. After you free him in the undead church, use the elevator shortcut to Firelink shrine and talk to him. After that his summon symbol will become available not far from Solaire's. The gargoyles will be no match against you plus the two npcs. Just be careful of their fire breath attack.

Once you beat the Bell Gargoyle boss(es) which is fairly early in to the game, you will afterwards climb up a bell tower and ring the bell.

The trophy should pop up after you've done that.

When you first reach Lordran you'll be given the only objective of finding and ringing both Bells existing in the world. One of them is located at the top of the Undead Church in Undead Parish and it is the recommended first one to ring.

Start by taking the right-hand path from Firelink Shrine up to Undead Burg and from there you'll advance to Undead Parish, probably beating the Taurus Demon boss on the way. When you reach the Parish you'll easily spot the big Church where you'll fight the Bell Gargoyles and then ring the bell.

Check the bosses section for more information on them.
