Pretty simple, and quite easy to do naturally within a playthrough.
During the game, you'll come across sections where you are either climbing up or down a wall, essentially using ledges as cover. Press X to get behind cover and then press LT to pop out, ready to fire.
Like many of the achievements in Dark Void, you should still get credit if you kill some enemies, die and restart, making it possible to obtain within the first chapters of the game.

Just to confirm you "you should still get credit..." it DOES work to rinse and repeat this achievement, i did not tested others (yet) but in the first part of the game i just killed all the enemy's from the cliff and then i just jumped down (what a cliffhanger :P) and then just auto reloaded the checkpoint. And after a few times: Achievement Unlocked, thanks man now i know that i can boost others also using this methode (i hope ;))

A vertical combat kill involves the player defeating an enemy while in vertical cover. There are a multitude of opportunites to acquire these kills.
You can achieve this through normal play. The kills accumulate over the entire game, and still count if you die/quit after performing one.

There will be area's in the game where you will need to press 
to scale up mountains and other high area's. You will first encounter Vertical Cover in Crash Site shortly after killing all the enemies on the turret. Simply Press to enter Vertical Cover and kill any enemies you see. Press 
to aim out of Vertical Cover to shoot your enemies. Press to get back into Vertical Cover until you're healed.
