How to unlock the Swing them sticks achievement in Dead Island - Definitive Guide

You will need to manually switch to Analog in the options>controls menu. The way this works is you need to hold down the 
, then use the Right Thumbstick to attack. If you want to chop off a head for example, pull the thumbstick all the way to the left/right and then quickly flick it in the exact opposite direction. It takes some getting used to. This is best done early in the game when zombies are slower and have less health.
A small trick to getting this with ease; kills while driving or shooting with analog controls turned on count toward this for some reason. You can avoid using this control mode at all if you get all 150 by running zombies over or using guns. There may be a glitch where those types of kills stop counting; to reset this issue, simply get a melee kill with the controls on and they'll start counting again.

For this trophy you need to change to the Analog Fighting Controls, this is done in the control menu which found via the pause menu. Simply change it from "Digital" to "Analog". Analog Fighting Controls mean you now have to hold down 
and move 
in the direction you want to swing. Say Harry wanted to do a swing from left to right, he'd move the to the left then swing it to the right while holding . We found it almost impossible to fight like this using melee weapons, the only way we were getting kills was if the zombie was lying on the floor and they weren't in groups. This is why it's recommended to use the Analog Fighting controls early on in the game. Zombies are also much easier to kill early on in the game since they're weaker. The only kills that count towards this trophy, are ones made with Melee weapons so don't bother using the following (credit to nimrod for this info):
- Kicks
- Guns
- Environmental
- Head-Jumps
As with every trophy, you can check your progress in the "Extras" => "Trophies" part of the pause menu.
Note: The controls for the PS4 version are slightly different, as you swing your weapon to the right with the 
button rather than .
