How to unlock the Mission Impossible achievement in Dead Space 2 - Definitive Guide

Zealot difficulty is not that much harder than Normal difficulty. I'd highly reccommend playing through on Casual or Normal and starting Zealot on a new game+.

I completed my Zealot playthrough 2 hours faster than my Normal one just because I knew what I was doing.

Before you new game+ you can use the power node exploit (video at bottom) to fully upgrade your weapons, rig and stasis module and it will make Zealot a ton easier. Also having power nodes to open all the storage cupboards is always helpful.

If you get stuck on a checkpoint try the stasis and run tactic. You may often find yourself with low health and/or with no ammo. This method is extremely effective in certain levels although you're not going to be getting any ammo/health/credit drops so don't overuse it.

Other than that it isn't that hard, the 4 weapons I used were Plasma Cutter, Pulse Rifle, Force Gun and the Line Gun.

Plasma Cutter and the Pulse Rifle are good for general use. The Force Gun is good for areas where your in an enclosed space and the Line Gun is amazing for when you're getting over run.

Other than that it's actually not as hard as you think. Have fun.

EDIT: Oh yea and beating the game on Hardcore won't unlock this achievement so you might aswell tackle this and get used to the game before you attempt Hardcore.

quick question.... when u have got to chapter 14 like the video, when u use a node to get into the door with 2 nodes or whatever after u have opened the door and saved it and loaded again will the door be unlocked as you have already used a node in the first place?? if that makes sense lol ... and great guide but it would be so much easier if you could do the new game+ on hardcore! :(

The door will be unlocked, however this exploit does not seem to work anymore. If it's worked for anyone this month (September 2011) please let me know.

You can try clearing your cache and going onto the game offline if they have patched it. Inconvenient but that's if they have. I no longer own this game so I can't test it for you.

an observation... Flamethrower. the MOST UNRATED weapon in the whole game. ran through zealot today in about 5hrs using only the fully upgrade flamer. Amazing amount of damage and cheap ammo. Only used the pulse rifle Alt fire on the elevator achieve segment. Takes statused Brutes down in about 5secs with a controlled burst.

Just people know still works,just restart checkpoint until the room only has 3000 credits in,then save again then go back to main menu and reload save.Then it on average gives you 5 nodes/circuit boards(after each save/restart checkpoint)..Before you have to quit to main menu...Pretty upgraded all my stuff and had full ammo and med packs....

Interesting! Just finished Dead Space 1 and about to start this. Flamethrower was one of the worst weapons in gaming history for the first game and now it is supposed to be awesome. Funny!

EDIT: The flamethrower is much better in this game but it is far away from great! There are 6 weapons that are at least better in my opinion. Too slow reload time makes this weapon a dangerous one to use and ammo goes away so quick.

Great strategies on the couple of video's I saw. Helped me out of a room on my Hardcore run when I had little ammo and health and REALLY didn't feel like dying.

This is a guide for anyone that wants to *start* on Zealot Difficulty. I do not recommend this move, however, as New Game+ makes life a lot easier. I did it play on Zealot first, though, so here's my advice to those bold enough to follow in my footsteps. I learned the hard way, so perhaps you can learn from my mistakes.

- Fully upgrade the Plasma Cutter! I had the Refurbished unlock from the first Dead Space, but the regular one will do. This will be the only weapon you are going to want to use for the majority of the game. It is quick to shoot, reload, and packs a punch on almost every enemy. Also, if it is the only weapon you carry, you will not find too much ammo for the other weapons.

- Before the first encounter with the Stalkers in Chapter 5, buy the Force Gun! These guys are the only enemies that gave me a hard time. They were too fast for the Plasma Cutter and ended me quickly. With the Force Gun, you can just put yourself in a corner or against a wall and wait for them to charge you. A single shot of Alt Fire will cause them to instantly die if you hit them head on.

- Run away, you may live to fight another day! I had a nasty habit of wanting to fully clear a room of all enemies if there were a lot of green crates around. I found that I wasted less ammo and health in the long run by running through a room and freezing enemies that got in my way. Sometimes it takes a while for the doors to open, so try to give yourself some breathing room and get out of there as fast as you can.

- Buy the Hacker Suit! On more than one occasion, only having to do 2 instead of 3 parts to the hacking mini game saved my butt and allowed me to quickly bypass some challenging and overwhelming battles. You may be tempted to buy other suits later on. I, for example, bought the Advanced Suit. This move hurt me really bad on money to spend on health and ammo during the final "gauntlet" before the end boss, so it is up to you if you think you have enough money towards the end of the game.

- For the part on top of the drill, run around like crazy! Enemies will be coming at you like a bat out of Hell. Bring lots of health and try not to stand in one place for too long. I barely made it through that part alive.

- Grab all of the semiconductors! You will need the money, believe me. In particular, if you find a diamond semiconductor, grab it! They're worth 25,000 credits. Some "mini-boss" enemies will drop them and there is one hidden behind a rock in the chapter where the giant drill is. You'll need all the creds you can get your hand on.

- You MUST buy and fully upgrade the Contact Beam before the final boss! The last store should be in chapter 13. Make sure you buy the Contact Beam; if you don't have enough nodes, respect the Plasma Cutter and fully upgrade the Contact Beam. I made the mistake of going to the final boss with only the Plasma Cutter and had to replay five chapters to get that weapon. The reason for its necessity is that one Alt Fire will cause the main target to show itself and it only takes 3-4 shots on that target to destroy it. It will make a difficult battle take less than 30 seconds.

- During the "final gauntlet" in chapters 14 and 15, run away! The Ubermorpth cannot be killed and there will be dozens of enemies. Run away, only stasis those that get in your way, get through doors to get checkpoints. You need to conserve as much ammo and health as possible for the final boss, so be quick and precise during this part.

- Make multiple saves! I saved a new slot every chapter in case I had to go back. This proved beneficial when I got to the final boss and had to go back. Would have been better if I had saved in chapter 13 instead of 12, but otherwise I wouldn't have been able to complete the game.

- Be patient! You're going to die a lot. Luckily there are checkpoints. If you can get into the next room, chances are you hit have hit a checkpoint. Stick with it, it will be a challenging 7 or so hours, but well worth the reward.

The last store is actually chapter 14, after the "Radiation Containment" then "Direct Marker Access" doors. In this location is a save, a store and a bench. This is right before you step through the door (and into Chapter 15).

It's really not that hard to knock out in one playthrough: harder than DS1 Impossible, sure, but not as bad as Halo Legendary modes etc. The problematic parts are the rooms with multiple leapers and/or pukers in your blind sides. In particular, that three-story room in 14 or so.

Basically if you are used to 3PS or FPS hard modes don't be afraid to jump right in. If you have Severed, you get a Seeker rifle free and early which is by far the most ammo efficient gun in the game. Think DMR. If you get in a nasty hole you can sell contact ammo and buy more seeker shells than you could ever use. Even the elite pukers, which seem to be the tankiest of the necromorphs, go down in three regular-fire dismembering shots with it.

Beat the game on Hardcore FIRST ! Then you get the Hand Cannon, aka the Foam Finger Gun. You can pick this up in the first store. After that... you will finish Zealot in about 4 hours. One shot...one kill !

This solution isn't for everyone, but if you want an easier 1000/1000 in only 3 play through then this is my suggestion
Play # 1 - Casual and attain all achievements accept Mission Impossible, Hard to the Core, Vacuum cleaner and Epic dismemberment. (Leave this save at completed for now, dont use new game + unless you give up on hardcore mode)
Play # 2 - Hardcore mode. I suggest reading a few guides here to get an idea of what you are in for and by all means only use Plasma Cutter and "Martial Law DLC" gun pack for force gun at first store. I saved Chapter 5, Chapter 9, and chapter 13 but do whats comfortable for you. (Use this save game to make New Game + on Zealot difficulty)
Play # 3 - Use your New Game + from your hardcore completion. After playing Hardcore and not being able to save, this will be easy in comparison, then you reach your first store and attain the free "Foam Finger Gun" and literally walk through the game. My Zealot playthrough took 5 hours and 5 minutes start to finish. You will also unlock Vacuum Cleaner, Epic Dismemberment and Mission Impossible. Hardcore mode made me pull my hair out, then zealot play I was literally laughing as i went. This gun made the game amusing and I actually enjoyed ambushing necromorphs instead of the other way around. "Foam Finger Gun" actually is the strategy, its all you need. No ammo used or needed, no reloading, instant death to almost any mob from 5 feet, death to most from 40 feet. It has no aim reticule so it threw me off at first, but then again its force gun x 10 and it takes no ammo!!! That means no inventory issues, no cash flow issues, just walk through level mopping up. Zealot playthrough can be hard or it can not only be easy, but amusing as well.

"Foam Finger Gun" is hands down the best reward weapon I have EVER attained in ANY game. So simple yet made the rest of the game even more enjoyable and less stressful. This item is not for the hardcore adventurer who likes a challenge, this gun is for those achievement farmers who dont need any more added stress and medical issues from these achievements. lol, and for that reason this gun should be used to mop up zealot and the dlc to finish up another game completion.

Complete the game on Zealot setting. In this setting enemies are at their toughest and ammo is very very limited compared to lower difficulties. I highly recommend upgrading your RIG Health as soon as possible, then worked on the Plasma Cutter and Contact Beam as these two weapons are absolutely crucial for the last few chapters.

(Some tips in this solution will be restated from my solution for "Epic Tier 3 Engineer" in Dead Space. Some tips are specific to Dead Space 2.)

As you know, Zealot difficulty is the hardest difficulty (in a sense) in Dead Space 2. You will take massive damage from enemies, and you'll find almost half as much ammo and loot than you would on any other difficulty. This means that you have to play carefully and make every shot count!

There's two ways you can go about playing Zealot:

1) You can import your file from your first playthrough and begin a Zealot playthrough with it. Doing this will start you off with everything you had in your previous playthrough so you will most likely have a fully upgraded RIG, and at least one fully upgraded weapon. Zealot will still be difficult, but your odds for survival are significantly improved.

2) You can begin a playthrough of Zealot difficulty from scratch. I won't judge, but in my opinion this is the most satisfying way to go about it.

(This guide assumes the player took the second option, and owns no DLC)

(If you don't own Dead Space: Ignition I highly recommend you purchase it. Having a save file will unlock many Conduit Rooms throughout the game that are full of goodies such as power nodes, medkits, and exclusive weapon skins and the hacker suit, that can make the hacking mini-game quicker.)

Finally, the tips:

[Your Loadout]

Weapons are down to personal opinion, but there is no doubting the usefulness of two weapons: the Plasma Cutter and the Contact Beam.

- The Plasma Cutter is your bread and butter gun, and should be what you use most of the time. It's just as powerful as it was in the previous game, with an added ability to ignite enemies when you upgrade it's special.

- The Contact Beam is an absolutely devastating weapon that will kill ANY necromorph besides bosses and/or the Brute in one shot. This INCLUDES enhanced necromorphs. This gun is a must-have for Zealot difficulty because you can use it to take down tough enemies and save many plasma cutter rounds in the progress. It also has a very
handy alt-fire that will knock down any enemy that is too close to you. What's better is that while doing the animation, you are invincible. Be wary, however that with this weapon you are essentially firing money because you will only find ammo in stacks of 1, and they are worth 1,000 credits. Make your shots count, and only use them when you really need to. With this weapon, the final boss is a joke.

These are the ONLY two weapons you need for your Zealot run. The other weapons have their uses, but they are either situational or just plain useless on Zealot due to the high enemy damage resistance.

[Suits]

A new feature in Dead Space 2 is the special properties that suits have. No matter what suit you are currently using you will always retain your highest unlocked armor and inventory space. So you can use the Engineer suit yet still have the full benefits (minus it's special) of the advanced suit.
Which suit you use is down to personal opinion and preference. If you own Dead Space: Ignition, using the Hacker Suit is useful to make the hacking mini-game faster.

I personally recommend using the Vintage Suit until unlocking the Advanced Suit.
Although the Vintage Suit's credit discount is small, it adds up. Every little bit helps!

[Upgrades]
(Keep at least one power node on you AT ALL TIMES! Power Node rooms are always worth opening.)

- Like in the previous game, max your Plasma Cutter's damage ASAP. Also, the quicker you unlock it's special, the better. Once your Cutter's damage is maxed and it's special unlocked, then you can mop up it's remaining upgrades.

- Another good thing about the Contact Beam is that it doesn't have any damage upgrades because it already kills in one shot. However, it has a very important special that can help greatly, so try to obtain it prior to the final boss. Upgrading it's reload speed and charge time can make it easier to use and thus are good upgrades to get.

[RIG, ETC]

[HP] - Very important upgrade. You should upgrade your HP regularly. Also note that when you upgrade your HP it will fully restore it. Good to keep in mind. Also if you are rich, you can refund a HP upgrade (once refund is unlocked) and purchase it again. Not recommended unless you have nothing better to do with your credits.

[Air] - Ignore. Virtually all vacuum sections have floating oxygen tanks or oxygen stations littered around. Upgrading it once is all you need if that.

[TK Damage] - This one is a mixed bag. On it's own, TK is very useful in this game, and it already packs a punch by itself. Upgrading it once or twice is fine, especially if you have your important upgrades out of the way.
--
[Energy, Duration, Recharge] - All useful, no reason not to max these. Upgrading energy will fully recharge it. Even though in this game your energy will passively regenerate on it's own it's still worth a note.

[Kinesis] - Useful and cheap to upgrade. Upgrading Kinesis will allow you to grab limbs and other throwables from further away. It will also help bring out of reach items to you. Upgrade whenever you feel the need.

[Combat Tips]

[Go for the Limbs!] - Obviously, the fastest way to dispatch an enemy is to cut it to pieces. Always go for the limbs! Also, did you know that if a Slasher looses both of it's arms it will instantly die? Good thing to keep in mind.

[DON'T underestimate melee combat] - Unlike the first game, melee combat is a viable, although risky combat option. Best used against one on one encounters. Stasis an enemy and wail on it with your fists, or stomp it while it's down. These are great ways to conserve ammo. Especially effective against crawling Slashers.

[Use TK whenever possible] - In Dead Space 2, throwing objects at enemies is very effective. Keep an eye out for red explosive canisters to hurl at unsuspecting enemies.
Just as important, use the limbs of dead enemies against living(ish) enemies! Although it could take both arms of a slasher to kill another, it will still harm them and save you ammo, especially in the early stages of the game. Use TK against enemies whenever possible.

[Conserve your Contact Beam for big game] - As I said earlier, the Contact beam will kill all non-boss enemies in a single shot. Use this to your advantage, saving your ammo for enhanced enemies or brutes. Also keep it's alt-fire in mind, it's very useful when you get surrounded.

[Don't forget about Stasis] - Stasis might not feel like it packs as big of a punch as it did in the first game, however Stasis is still vital. You can use it a little more freely in Dead Space 2 since it will now slowly recharge on it's own, but still save it for situations where it's needed. You can also use it to stasis lone enemies so you can rough them up with melee combat to save ammo.

[Other Tips]

[Use the safe] - The safe is your friend, please use it. Instead of selling excess medkits and ammo, store them in the safe for later. This is essentially giving you some insurance for the future in case things go badly. You won't have to spend precious credits to pick yourself back up when you have items safely in storage.

[Don't be lazy] - I know it's tedious sometimes, but backtracking helps you. When your inventory fills up, backtrack to the store to sell/store away items. In Zealot, you get a fraction of the ammo that you get on other difficulties, so every little bit helps. Everything is worth credits and you'll need all you can get.

[When to use Large Medkits] - As you know, using a large med kit fully restores your HP. This is wasted if your HP isn't upgraded a couple times, since you can use a combination of mediums and smalls to fully heal you. It's best to use a large medkit when your health is orange/red. This can prove difficult on Zealot since you will die quickly. Use your judgement. The best situation is after the threat is gone, and your HP is low. Giving you enough time to access your inventory and use it. It's far more effective to use a large to fully restore your health when it's low, then to use 3+ meds and a small or two. (If your HP is fully upgraded) Save these for when you need to patch yourself up.

[Having trouble with the final boss?] - Not with the Contact Beam you aren't. This gun will take care of the boss in a few shots. You can use it's alt-fire when the phantoms get too close to blow them away.

To unlock this achievement play the game on Casual first and then use the New Game + feature for your first playthrough on Zealot difficulty. All your items, weapons, nodes and money will carry over into your Zealot run. Also another option would be to play a new game on Hardcore before progressing through the Zealot New Game +. Unlocking the hand cannon after beating Hardcore will make your Zealot playthrough insanely easy. Hardcore gamers can get away with 2 playthroughs (Zealot and Hardcore), but I recommend 3 for most people:

  • Playthrough 1: Casual/Normal. After beating start a New Game+ on Zealot, save and exit out.

  • Playthrough 2: New Game on Hardcore

  • Playthrough 3: New Game + on Zealot

To get the trophy you need to beat the game on Zealot difficulty. First, I advise you to go through the game on Normal difficulty (to get the Fully Outfitted trophy, you will need almost 2 complete playthroughs of the campaign). After that, start the game again (New Game +) on the same save on the Zealot difficulty level. All your equipment and weapons in your inventory will be carried over from the previous game.

There is an easy way to avoid the 3rd playthrough.

When you play through the game on Unreal with 3 saves, the last save is made around chapters 12-13. Once you complete Unreal, load your latest save and change the difficulty level to Impossible. After completing the remaining 2-3 chapters you will receive this trophy.

In fact, there is nothing complicated. Just play on normal or easy, keeping first aid kits and ammo in the safe all the time, and only then play on impossible.

I advise you to go through the game on an easy level to open the impossible one! go through the impossible one and at the end of the game you will be given a glove after shooting which the enemies will fly to pieces! and quickly run through the game on the unreal level!
