How to unlock the The Sampler Platter achievement in Dead Space 2 - Definitive Guide

To get this achievement, you must kill at least one Necromorph with each weapon. The weapons and locations are listed below. There are 10 default weapons from the game.

NOTE: DLC/Pre-Order/Special variants of the default weapons do count for the achievement. If you get a kill, but reload your checkpoint/save/die after that kill, you must get it again. Also, from my understanding, this does not have to be in one playthrough. Some are reporting you do, while others are getting it in their second playthrough. You should really not have an issue getting this in one run though.

Just as the first game, you must take the schematic to the store for the gun to become available to purchase.

Plasma Cutter
Chapter 1
Location: Found in operating room through normal story progression.

Javelin Gun
Chapter 2
Location: Store.

Line Gun
Chapter 2
Location: Store.

Pulse Rifle (Schematic)
Chapter 3
Location: Immediately after Chapter 2 where you fight upside down, and after the train crashes. Go around behind the train to the left, and it's on a shelf.

Ripper (Schematic)
Chapter 5
Location: At the bottom of area with the coffins, you need to solve the statis/gravity ring puzzle. If you are in front of the console, turn around and you should see it on a shelf to the right.

Detonator (Schematic)
Chapter 5
Location: After the elevator ride where the Slasher drops from above, exit and progress down to the executive office on the right. It will be in there.

Seeker Rifle (Schematic)
Chapter 6
Location: In the start of Chapter 6, follow your locator to the room with the balconies. Look to your right, and you should see it on the floor.

Flame Thrower (Schematic)
Chapter 6
Location: Toward the end of the school, after the fight in the gym, you will see a classroom with a window on your right. Go into this room, and it's in the back right corner.

Force Gun (Schematic)
Chapter 7
Location: After the Solar Array elevator ride (where you get the Elevator Action achievement) it will be in one of the lockers with the white light. Make sure you kill the Cysts first.

Contact Beam (Schematic)
Chapter 7
Location: After the Main Frame puzzle, follow your locator through normal progression. Kill all the Necromorphs, but do not follow to the right as the marker tells you. There is a node locked room off to the left. The schematic is in this room, so make sure you have a node.

If you leave negative feedback, please state why so I may adjust this as appropriate. Thanks.

Do you have to kill enemies with each weapon's alt-fire too? I'm pretty sure I've killed an enemy with every weapon and no dice.

Nevermind, mine popped after using the alt-fire of the Force Gun. I don't believe you have to use alt-fire to get this though because I'm almost certain I never used the Flamethrower's alt.

I do not believe it matters if it is the primary fire or not. I thought the same thing, until I remembered I reloaded a checkpoint after I killed one with the seeker rile.

Well, thank you for at least telling me why you voted negatively. Others reported the pre-orders/DLC were not working at the time. So if others can confirm this, I will gladly edit this correctly. Until then, this has proven to work 100%.

Do not take me wrong, you have a good solution and in light of its content I realize I might be a little bit too hard on you. The list of schematics is a great bonus... and on that alone I am going to change my vote to positive, however I do ask you to edit the solution to reflect the fact that you have received a mixed reports on DLC weapons...

Thanks. I do not have all the DLC, but I appreciate you looking into it. I changed it accordingly.

The Javelin Gun gave me trouble on this one. I only used it to get the achievement "Shock Therapy" (which uses the Javelin guns Alt fire) and then banked it, but when I used my last gun and this one didn't pop I went back through them all. First guy I killed with a few javelins did it for me.

Just a note on enemy types-- I finally popped this achievement after killing a normal slasher with the Ripper, even though I had already killed pack and cysts with that weapon. So if you can't seem to pop this, make sure to try killing a slasher with each weapon.

Does it have to be done all in one playthrough?

I need the same answer as above - does this need to be in one playthrough?

Some players report it has to be completed in one run, while others say it does not. You should be able to get it in one run though, but if you do not get it on your first run you should be able to in a New Game+.

The force gun does kill small enemies. When using it on the normal size enemies they indeed get knocked back.

Urgh, love that this doesn't have any tracking. I've used all 9 guns and nothing. Zip, zilch, nada.

Hold on, does the hand cannon count too? I say this since it is technically a different type of weapon than the others.

If I have the patrol seeker rifle, do I need to get the "ordinary" seeker rifle too?

Killing the enemies with weapons from three paid DLCs (cannot confirm CE or any other free/preorders) does count towards this achievement. I have certainly tested it myself. Weapons from DLC are same in terms of modding (with power nodes) as well. Basically in short if you mod one seeker rifle, the modifications stay on all seeker rifles you end up obtaining (including ones from DLC and CE).
Through almost two full playthroughs I have never owned a normal plasma rifle and always used Earthgov (felt like using Weyland Yutani) one, since I unlocked this achievement my comment must be correct or the achievement is glitched.

I have voted negatively on this solution because it contains FACTUAL errors, contrary to my own testing. If you feel like correcting those errors or proving me wrong I would be more than happy to review my vote.

I can confirm too that this only seems to work when killing NECROMORPHS, the normal enemies. I killed a Cyst with the pulse rifle, and it didn't pop, next thing I kill a Necro with the same gun and it pops. So if you're going for this one, kill Necromorphs!

I would like to provide a farm-spot for folks who completed the game and want to get this early on in a new game+.

This is right at the beginning of Chapter 2, immediately after you crawl out of Chapter 1 through the Engineer Shaft(?).

You have your room with a shop (for buying all the weapons, provided by kael7, in his guide), and you have your Necromorph right as you continue through that door, he should spawn at the other end of the escalator and run towards you with hellish speed. Blast him.

Now I created 2 separate saves so I could load back the game without all the weapons needed for this Achievement.

1. Save up on the Save Station on the left of the same room.
2. Quit the game, and load up your save again.
3. Once you're back in the game, walk back to the shop, open and close the shop (or walk to the back wall), and go back into the room, where the Necromorph should re-spawn. This time though he will not be up and running but "fake-deathing". Blast him with your next weapon 'o choice, repeat.

When you're done, load up your original save, and you won't have to spend all those credits on weapons you're not using.

Also this is a none-efficient way to up the count towards your Epic Dismemberment Achievement. Still if you want to get this early in the game (or new-game+) and only need a few more limbs...

This requires that you get a single kill with all 10 weapons available in the retail game. NOTE: If you get a kill with a particular weapon and then die before the next checkpoint, you will not get credit for that weapon. Special weapons that come with the DLCs or Collector's Edition COUNT towards this achievement. You will not have to buy the retail version of that weapon. If you dont have the CE or any of the DLCs, you should have all of the weapon schematics by the end of Chapter 7. This can also be finished on New Game+ if you happen to miss any schematics. A guide to the schematic locations can be found HERE. The guns you will need to get kills with are as follows:

  • Plasma Cutter: Chapter 1 through normal game progression

  • Javelin Gun: Chapter 2 Store (no schematic needed)

  • Line Gun: Chapter 2 Store (no schematic needed)

  • Pulse Rifle: Chapter 3 Schematic

  • Ripper: Chapter 5 Schematic

  • Detonator: Chapter 5 Schematic

  • Seeker Rifle: Chapter 6 Schematic

  • Flame-thrower: Chapter 6 Schematic

  • Force Gun: Chapter 7 Schematic

  • Contact Beam: Chapter 7 Schematic

You need to get a kill with each of the following weapons. Normally you will need to find the schematics for these weapons and bring them to a Store to be able to purchase them. If you missed a schematic however, fret not, the weapon will be added automatically to the store in Chapter 13, but try not to let this happen as some weapons are just too valuable to miss.

Plasma Cutter
Line Gun
Javelin Gun
Pulse Rifle
Ripper
Detonator
Force Gun
Flame Thrower
Contact Beam
Seeker Rifle

A little hint. If you kill necromorphs with, for example, a pipe cutter, a pulse rifle, and a plasma cutter, and then you want to load a past save in order to quickly move to a store where you can take or buy another weapon, then you will not be able to. All data on killing necromorphs with these weapons is erased, and you have to kill them again. So don’t be cunning and the trophy is yours)

Many sites write that weapons from the DLC that are sold for free in the store do not count. These are lies. I just received a trophy without purchasing any weapons other than dlc. A nail gun (automatic) does not count. Only those types of weapons that are in the original game are required (or their DLC analogues)

Leave it for later, upgrade other weapons, and when you beat the game, start it again in + mode (all the items you already had) and buy the remaining weapons.
