How to unlock the Master Engineer achievement in Deadliest Catch: Sea of Chaos - Definitive Guide

The goal of this achievement is to collect 8 bonus stars in the patching mini game. The catch is that 8 stars are only available to a deckhand that has 5 bars in their patching ability.

I was able to get this one pretty fast, here's how I set it up:

- Play campaign mode and pick the Full Career campaign.
- Buy the Steady Girl boat which has the lowest durability.
- Hire Matthew (or Nick) who has 4 bars for the patch ability already.

Fill the boat up with fuel and then just start going back and forth on the map. After a couple days things should start breaking down on your boat and you can use Matthew to patch them up.

During the patch game, try to pick up all seven bonus stars which will help Matthew level up quicker. Repeat this until Matthew is up to 5 bar patch ability which I was able to get after only 3 patch games.

Once he has 5 bars, the next patching game will have 8 bonus stars to collect. Make sure that Matthew has all 5 bars yellow or else all 8 stars won't show up, let him rest if needed. Once you collect all 8 stars and reach the finish, the achievement will unlock. I was able to get the achievement by the end of day 5 of the season in less than half hour.

The patch games are pretty easy, but here are a couple hints:

- You are limited to the number of patch cables you can use, so you may run out if you have to snake around a lot to collect all the stars. Because of this, try to use the longer patch cables when you can to cover the most ground.

- The cables available will replace each other slowly if you can't find the one you need. To speed it up, you can just select the cable and hit the B button to discard which will make a new one show up. You can also hit the B button multiple times if you want to remove patches that you already laid down.

As the objective to win the Full Season is only to earn $1.5 in the final season I found this solution to be easy to attain while going about my normal playthrough. I used the Steady Girl boat, Matthew, and Monte, and got my achv and won the first season (8 days), so definitely not too hard to do. That shitty boat had 3 breakdowns in my first 10 minutes of play!

This is the most time consuming achievement to get outside of the Full Season campaign. You need to pick either MATTHEW or NICK (they both have 4 bars for the PATCH ability) first off. You need to go into a tournament, create a 2 player BONANZA & set the turn length to 8 days. Once that is done select PLAYER 2 and have them rest for the full 8 days time frame.

Now the fun part begins!

Pick the boat that has the worst reliability rating (You want it to break down!), fill up your gas tank to maximum, leave the dock and just drive from the farthest fishing point on the left to the farthest fishing point on the right side of the map. your doing this so you can break the motor on the boat. Once it is broken use either MATTHEW or NICK (Only use 1 person the whole time for patching, don't use anyone else or your time will run out before the tournament is over) and patch the motor. Try to hit as many of the stars (maximum of 6 or 7 stars will be available until your a 5th bar patch ability) as your can. The time you take is irrevelant, hitting the stars will help you gain that 5th bar on the patch ability to enable the 8th star to show up. You will need to repair 3 things before either guys hits a 5th bar on the patch ability. Once they do just drive around until something else breaks and then use that crew member to fix the item for your achievement.

This trophy is earned from the mini-game that repairs damaged items on the ship (crane, engine, or winch) while you are out at sea. The game involves placing simple connecting wires so that you connect the green (start) and red (finish) connectors on the panel. There will also be areas you cannot cover indicated by pieces of blocking material. For the trophy, you must navigate the panel by putting down the wires and covering at least 8 areas marked by stars. Crew members must be ranked to Patch skill of 5 before the required 8 stars will appear. Performing well in each mini-game increases crewmember's skill faster than with a poor performance.

First you need to upgrade the “engineer” to level 5, otherwise the 8 bonus stars will not appear. The entire mini-game consists of connecting wires and closing holes. So, we need to close 8 holes MARKED WITH A STAR.
