How to unlock the Pacifist achievement in Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Definitive Guide

This is for people that are struggling to get this to unlock despite playing a completely non-lethal play through. I took me 3x!

On my first play through I played on "give me deus ex" and tried to go for both pacifist and foxiest of the hounds. I killed nobody and to my surprise, pacifist didn't pop -- foxiest did though. Went through another play through being very careful of the glitched kills making sure I only saw z's after taking down an enemy. I also made sure after moving any enemies they were still alive. After completing the final boss, to my surprise, it didn't pop again. So on my 3rd play through I deciding to make it a complete speed run and play on the easiest setting. I finished it in 5 hours and 30 minutes.

Here's what I did:

To start off -- I deleted all my saves via the Xbox memory setting on the dashboard.

I took down only 1 person in the whole game and that was Zeke Sanders when trying to access Sandoval. I used the stun gun and made sure he was alive still and did not move him.

I did 0 side quests.

I did NOT save Malik.

I talked to both Sarif and Taggard before the final boss fight.

During the boss fight I didn't worry about the crazies, so they could've been electrocuted for all I know.

Finally it popped!!! On a side note, I loved the game and had a good time trying to see how fast I could finish it! Also, I know this sounds a bit paranoid but on my third time attempting it I wanted to take zero chances!

Edit: I just want to put it out there that this isn't necessarily a guide, just my experience and statagy on how I successfully unlocked the achievement.

Edit 2: It's brought to my attention that if the crazies die during the boss fight it does indeed count. Maybe I just got lucky and none died or maybe I did it fast enough they didn't have a chance? Not sure, but as others have said make sure they are not dead. You can try to reload if they do and hopefully it will pop for you. Thanks to the people or telling me to add this in.

This is what Callem x360a did if you want to give it a try -

"I tried the last battle again, this time making sure to takedown all 6 targets and EMP the 2 Bots and the achievement unlocked.

That leads me to believe that, unlike the rest of the game, if the turrets kill the crazies in the final battle, the game counts them as YOUR kills."

Thanks for the info Callum.

You are absolutely wrong to say that crazies dying during the final showdown doesn't matter. I arrived at that point certain I hadn't killed anyone and completed the game. Achievement didn't pop :(

I replayed (several times) ensuring non of the crazies died after I had hit them and eventually it DID pop so this without any doubt can prevent getting this achievement.

Interesting. That very well could be true, however, all I did was state that I didn't touch them, just ran strait to the glass. Maybe I got lucky in that short time and none died?

I can confirm that the final battle is somewhat glitched. I was very, very careful on my playthrough, making sure that no-body died by my hand and if the "pretend dead" glitch happened, I would reload my save. I completed the game and the achievement didn't unlock.

I tried the last battle again, this time making sure to takedown all 6 targets and EMP the 2 Bots and the achievement unlocked.

That leads me to believe that, unlike the rest of the game, if the turrets kill the crazies in the final battle, the game counts them as YOUR kills.

If possible, could you include this in your solution for other people, so they can try this before attempting another run?

It's useful to have your experience written down like this, but do include the part about the crazies!
It's interesting that it the achievement still popped with you, but there are enough accounts that doesn't work.

Just popped despite not saving the hostages early on, not giving the detective a second shot of morphine and I found two dead crazies in the last room plus the women powering the Hynod (sp?) all died. Maybe they've patched it after complaints? idk. Thanks for the guide.

Darn. I just replayed the last fight like 10 times, making sure to use gas grenades on all enemies, and trap the girls. Still didn't pop. No idea where I would've killed someone....Guess I gotta start all over...?

Two points worth mentioning. The enemies at the beginning of the game in the prologue, you can't kill them either, made that mistake my first run. Also, destroying those robots also negate this achievement.

I also wanted to point out where I had some difficulty was during the Malik sequence - if you tranq enemies, and then EMP the bots (like I did) they will explode and kill the guys you tranqed, thus negating a pacifist run.

The crazies dying in the final battle was my issue. Redid the fight making sure they didn't die and got the achv.

Never Kill one enemy. Making sure no one saw me on the entire playtrough (got foxiest), but this one never pop. I'm sure this is because of the skull glitch cause I think one time, someone I took down shown a skull except of the zzz, but I read here that it doesn't matter.

This is not because of the last fight cause I reloaded this one at the beggining and found out we could finish it in 3 seconds if we have the laser rifle. Just shooting the boss without doing anything else lollll

Can anyone confirm if the "pretend dead" glitch is still present in the Directors Cut version? I'm about halfway through and didn't know about it until now. Don't really want to go through a third playthrough.

Got the "cheevo" today on hardest mode, with saving Malik (in the whole area you have to check 10 corps with the "Zzz") and together with "foxiest of the hounds".
At the last boss y only disabled the robots with grenades and ignore the 6 guys (standing on a ledge so i don´t get hurt by the electricity) until the glas brakes. After the cut scene there is in one of the rooms a dead body (with skull-symbol) but the "cheevo" popped...

Just a tip for the final boss fight, if you have a Lazer rifle you can shoot the boss as soon as the fight starts and skip the whole fight with about 500-1000 Lazer ammo

For those playing the Director's Cut Edition like myself, I was able to unlock this one during my New Game+ playthrough. So it isn't glitched like some may have purported.

So the crazies in the final boss fight do not count as your kills if they are killed by the electric floor. Watched it happen, confirmed dead, Pacifist popped after the boss fight.

I did not get this to pop despite painstakingly following a great video guide step for step to get all achievements in one run. I believe that I may have accidentally killed one of the crazies in the final boss while emp'ing one of the robots, which of course exploded. I'll reload and try my best to ensure they survive and report back to see if this is the issue. It seems to be the most problematic area of the entire game which voids this achievement.

I reloaded this and got it, and I ensured that I didn't touch the robots as I believe that when I did blow one up with an emp grenade, the explosion killed one of the 6 crazed guards that you knock out in the final boss.

I I not good in stealth games but I managed to get both achievement (foxiest too)!!!
The only place you need to be careful is when you need to save Malik. But I recommend not to. And the very last boss, I made sure none of the human enemies die.

I'm not saying it's necessarily glitched. Personally, I just couldn't get the achievement using take downs. I know many people got both Foxiest and Pacifist in one playthrough. I just wanted to be sure that I received it on my third run so I didn't want to take any chances.

No luck for me... I think something went wrong when I saved Malik, there were dead bodies, but I wrongly thought it was not me. Lucky for me I still have a save there, so I'm going to try again from there. I did get Foxiest of the Hounds, so that takes a little pressure off. If this does not work, I'll go for this and Legend at the same time.

Oh, and I did not give the morphine, but I read that it does not matter.

After my third play-through it finally unlocked.
The first time around on 'give-me-deus-ex' I got 'foxiest of the hounds', but for some reason I didn't unlock this achievement. I replayed the last boss a few times, but to no avail.

Second time around was my 'frustrated' speed run on easy. I didn't care if guards shot at me or not, I just ran for it. But they must have killed each other, or fallen off buildings, suffered strokes or whatever, because it didn't unlock again.

A year later I attempted my last semi-speed run on easy. Made sure that I didn't kill or even knock out anyone who wasn't absolutely necessary (total of around 6 KO's). No side missions. No weapon pick-ups or buys. I completely omitted everything that wasn't main quests. But also made sure that no one ever was alerted to my presence. I cloaked and ran past Malik and watched her die from the elevator. Last boss I killed instantly with the laser rifle (without hacking the console or waiting for the crazies to come out). This run took around 5-6h.

But it finally unlocked!!!!

Edit last boss figth:
After the starting cut scene i ran left around the pillar and in the middle, entered the code and then from the (code- console) right and upstairs, standing on a ledge, no one of the 6 guys ever take notice from me, disabled the roboter (4) with grenades (all thrown from the ledge);after a minute the glas brakes automatically and for the final shot i used the stun gun into the head...

Frustrated with this one now. Played through first time years ago but never bothered with achievements or anything and have now come to clean the game up and get 1000G

First play through (seconds technically), i went through the game without killing anyone but got other achievements like 50 takedowns etc but made sure to have no kills (checked for Zzzz's etc) and foxiest popped but not pacifist

Played through again on hardest setting and this time i decided i would not take any enemies down at all. Not a single takedown - lethal or otherwise so never had to check for Zzzz's etc. Didn't even take down Zeke Sanders when getting to Sandovals hideout as mentioned by OP and the achievement didn't pop at the end

I've replayed the final boss fight and was quick enough entering code and jumping onto the hiding spot that the 6 crazies dont even leave their little corridor. Then shot the final boss with stun gun but no pop

Not sure what more i can do. I know without a shadow of doubt that i never shot or knocked anyone down. The only times i shot my stun gun were on Yelena boss fight and then one shot on the final boss

EDIT: played through a 3rd time, playing the exact same way as my 2nd time through but this time i did perform a knockdown on Zeke (making sure of Zzzz's) and i also used a Laser Rifle on the final boss and killed her from where you're stood at the start of the fight (so didn't enter code into panel or anything) and it finally popped

None of the glitched kills (the Zzzz turning to a skull) affect the achievement. If you knock them out with a non-lethal weapon, it counts. However if they fall off a building or something like that they will die it and it will count against you.

You can do all the side quests you want, as long as you don't kill anyone during them.

You CAN save Malik if you want, just be sure to neutralize all guards non-lethally. There's a video on YouTube showing it. Even still, if she dies it doesn't count because YOU don't kill her. Remember the achievement specifically states "die by your hand". If they don't die at your hand, it doesn't affect it.

Stick primarily with non-lethal takedowns. Ammo in the game is limited and if you rely too much on the Tranq Rifle, Stun Gun, and PEPS (only non-lethal guns in the game) you're going to run out of ammo.

If you can avoid a guard(s), do so. If not, use the non-lethal takedown. Failing that, use the Stun Gun/Tranq. PEPS isn't recommended in most cases because it draws attention. It's useful for doing side quests without killing anyone.

Your first augmention should be cloaking. Max it out. Reflex Booster is a great idea to. Mostly everything else outside of Chemical Rebreather and the Leg Augments have a use. Get the Typhoon if you want to in order to make boss fights easier.

Oh and Gas Grenades are the most helpful. Especially in Tai Young Medical after you get locked out of Zhao's room. Just toss one gas grenade at the group of guards and most if not all of them will go down easily.

I can confirm that udring my playthrough a few D-Row Ballers died from Tranq rounds but the achievement still popped...phew!

Shame the no alarm achievement didn't :-s

Time for another play through then - not really that much of a problem with a game this good though :-)

The main point to watch for when saving Malik and still getting the Achievement is to make sure the exploding Mech doesn't kill them. I actually had to move 3 of them to cover because the explosion kept killing them even though they were out long before it blew.. Using Cloak and keeping the mech looking for me I finally got through it with all of them sleeping like babies.

Thanks, Duke, for pointing that out and the confirmation. I reloaded the same save file about ten times because it happened to me - I shot a Double T member with the tranquilizer gun and when I went to search him, he had a skull icon each time.

To the author of this solution, it may warrant rewording. I understood what you're trying to say, but I had to reread it several times to make sure I knew what you were meaning to say (pointing at the first paragraph).

A tai Yong employee just have a skull be side his head. I was really worried cause I knew I only stunned him. I hope everything will be good for the achievement.

A few things important:

First, always just lightly press the b button. You will know if it was a stealthy takedown if it says merciful soul.

Second, pour your upgrades into stealth early on. Upgrades relating to cones, rAnge, and seeing through walls does help a lot.

Third, if going for pacifist, saving malik from the heli is a really headache. Make sure you check the bodies here when you're done and make sure there are no skulls. Try to save blowing up the robot for last or else a soldier will be caught in the explosion. I got extremely lucky, though, when I did it, because I blew up the robot somewhat early with an emp mine and still nobody died.

Lastly, when you're done with the knockout achievements, stick with only using a tranquilizer gun or stun gun to eliminate the risk of a lethal takedown. Stock up on ammo.

That is all! Good luck!

Just thought I'd share my experience. I played the game through without killing anyone and destroying any robots. I only killed the bosses at the end of the levels.

When I completed the last boss I had killed the women in the pods and a couple of the guards. The achievement did NOT pop.

I went back and just replayed the last boss again but this time leaving the women in the pods and guards alone and only going after Zhao.

The achievement popped straight away. I know it says bosses don't count but I think the guards and/or the women in the pods DO. As this is the only boss fight with 'others' I think the Pacifist achievement strictly interprets this.

As the only thing I did differently was not kill these on my second play through then I think I can be quite certain of this.

Very simple: DO NOT KILL ANYONE (except the 4 bosses wink).

Basically, whenever you take someone down (via takedown or weapon) make certain you see the "Merciful Soul" bonus appear. As long as that happens, you are in the clear.

I say keep your eye on that bonus because, if you are using the tranq rifle you may see the game glitch a few times and, even though you may have obtained the bonus required for this trophy, upon looting your victim you may find that the skull (signifying a dead enemy) is on him as opposed to the "Z's" (signifying an unconscious enemy).

PLEASE NOTE
: This glitch does not negate the Pacifist trophy. As long as you obtain the "Merciful Soul" bonus, you will obtain the trophy at the end of the game. I only mention the glitch so people do not freak out when they come across a dead body they were 110% certain they tranqed.

Also, please note that this trophy is negated by enemies that die "by your hand". I will offer an example of a scenario where, although I did obtain the "Merciful Soul" bonus, I would not have received Pacifist at the end of the game.

On your 2nd trip to Hengsha, when Malik crashes down and you can either save her OR let the soldiers blow her up, there is a mech that falls from the sky. I was doing everything I could to save Malik via taking everyone on Bruce Lee style wink. I got Merciful Soul on every one, and I took out the mech with an EMP grenade. An EMP does not hurt the soldiers, especially when they are down, but it does disable the mech, and in turn initiates a self-destruct command. Enemy soldiers that were unconscious near the blast ended up dead.

Was this done by "my hand"? You could make that claim easily, since I did destroy the mech. So be careful where bodies are in proximity to other enemies.

Another example, that I feel is completely unfair angry, is below:

During the same sequence (2nd or 3rd attempt of mine to save Malik AND simply knock everyone out) I had everyone knocked out far enough away from the mech, however if you look around you can see a lot of red barrels - usually a red barrel in a game means something can, and will, go boom - and the soldiers are not the brightest in the head. As I was taking out a sniper in one area, people started firing on me and blew up an explosive barrel killing a soldier I had knocked unconscious.

Was this "by my hand"? Hell no! That soldier was willing to sacrifice someone else to take me down! But, at post-game I would have not received Pacifist.

If you have any questions or suggestions please leave them in the comments field below. As always, if you vote negatively, please explain why in the comments as well.

This isn't as hard as it sounds but there are a few things you must keep in mind when going through the game! There's only a few things you need to remember to do when taking someone out, so always keep them in mine and make them a force of habit!

Remember to always take someone out by just tapping . If at any point you kill someone with your Augmentations by holding down  as a takedown, reload a last save. When someone has been knocked out, hover over their body and you'll notice the Z's in a little box. This means they're simply knocked out and not dead.

The second part to this is to NEVER use a gun unless it's the Tranquillizer or Stun guns. These, just like a passive takedown, will knock the enemy out and not kill them. If you use anything that involves bullets, then the target will die and void this achievement.

If by chance you do a passive takedown and and instead of the Z's symbol you get a skull and crossbones do not worry about this. It's a minor glitch within the game. If you know you pulled of a passive takedown, all will be ok.

Highly Missable! You must complete the game using 100% Non-Lethal methods. That means using Takedowns, Gas Grenades, and the Stun Gun. If an enemy is taken out by a Non-Lethal approach, a "Zzz" icon will show when their body is highlighted. The Tranquilizer Rifle is reported to be occasionally glitched and sometimes deals lethal shots (especially headshots) so avoid using it if possible.

Lethal methods are only permitted during Boss Fights. An enemy who is killed/dead will show a "Skull" icon when highlighted.

Types of kills that will NOT lock this trophy:

  • Destroying robots and turrets
  • An exploded robot that killed nearby enemies with this explosion (not a 100% guarantee, it’s better to avoid this in the moment with a helicopter crash. It’s quite easy even on hard)
  • Killing Bosses
  • Entering a lethal dose of morphine in the side quest "Old Acquaintances"
Types of kills that will lock the trophy:

  • Killing enemies in Prologue (attack on Sharif Industries)
  • Lethal neutralization (hold )
  • Murder with any firearm
  • Murder due to the explosion of barrels, fire extinguishers, etc.
  • Stunned enemies who fall from heights or into electrocuted water
  • Tranquilizer rifle/stun gun glitch. Sometimes after a shot the icon on the enemy is a skull, not "Zzz". No one knows 100% whether this has an effect, but it’s better to replay the moment if this happens
  • The robots and turrets you hacked killed the enemies. Try to turn them off or ignore them altogether.
  • Killing Daimon Chan (dropped from the roof) in the side quest "Rotten Case". Plant drugs on him.
  • Rescue Malik. Everyone can be knocked out without any problems using a stun gun, a stun and an EMP grenade or mine on the robot
  • Killing madmen on Panchaea, including in the battle with Zhao

I just finished the game for the second time and got this trophy. There was a glitch, a person neutralized with a tranquilizer rifle was counted as killed, that is, a shard above him caught fire, I did not avoid this in any way and just continued to play through the game. As a result, I received the trophy, I conclude that the glitch does not affect it in any way. So don’t be alarmed if you suddenly encounter this, save your nerves and continue playing calmly)

Received this trophy under the following circumstances:

  • threw a man off the roof in the task Rotten Business;
  • personally administered a lethal dose of morphine to a detective (at his request);
  • prevented Isaiah's suicide.
BUT in the battle with the last boss (No. 4) he used lethal weapons ONLY against Zhao herself . That is, Zhao killed with a fully upgraded 10mm pistol, and the rest with a PEPS gun. Perhaps it was the killing of innocent girls that is the reason for not receiving the trophy.

In the battle with Zhao, it is good to have a fully upgraded lazar rifle and stealth mode. So as not to accidentally kill the enraged, we simply do not activate the buttons, the chicks do not leave, we do not kill them, the psychos do not appear. Turn on stealth and immediately run to Zhao and kill him from the lazarka. If you have completely improved it, then one charge is enough, even on a difficult level. .Don’t forget to maintain invisibility so that the turrets don’t notice

we kill the last boss with a laser as soon as you break the automatic machine guns 8) we don’t do anything else (because you won’t wake up the psychos because they won’t kick you out and to prevent this from happening, you don’t need to 1 kill girls who are locked and 2 not hack the devices there). any button will go to the video and in your pocket

In the mission at Sharif's plant, if you try to save the hostages not in an alternative way, bypassing through the ventilation, but directly by sneaking to the doors, then when you try to break and open it, the bomb will go off and kill the hostages. Death will be pinned on you.

The tranquilizer rifle/stun gun glitch is easy to avoid. This glitch occurs only with characters who, when approaching them, change their color on the radar from green to white. Those. only characters who are guarding something and start yelling at you when you get close. To prevent this glitch from bothering you, before you start clearing the area, approach the green characters guarding the approaches, let them yell at you and run away before they pull out their weapons. After this, the paralyzing weapon will not kill anyone in this section.

Guys, the last battle with the boss... 1) Turn off the turrets (hacking or code 2012)... 2) Hiding in the corner on the podium where Zhao hangs and plays smart, wait until her glass cracks from EMP pulses and shoot from a plasma rifle. MAIN: 1) the implant must be pumped (protection from EMR). 2) if you initially ignored the plasma rifle, you can pick it up from the dead guard right before the final meeting with Zhao, take the cartridges from him (I did this myself). You don’t need to touch anyone else, neither robots nor madmen... I got a PACIFIST for one playthrough).

Anyone who completes everything in one playthrough, or combines “pacifist” and “factory zero” in the DLC, MUST follow the Missing link on the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErH1ulv4zjU), do not waste the moment of saving everyone, If you don’t break the flask and immediately save Kavanagh and the prisoners together, the pacifist will not be given bail for the murdered! The whole game I went to the pacifist and the slick, they gave the slick, they gave the plant zero, there is no pacifist. In other places I couldn’t 100% get pierced - I threw it off the roof in another save, injected it with morphine, but it said it had no effect. There were no glitches with the tranquilizer, no one fell from the roof...

“An exploded robot that killed nearby enemies with this explosion (not a 100% guarantee, it’s better to avoid this in the moment with a helicopter crash. It’s quite easy even on hard)”

replay - 100% will pin death on you

"Glitch with the tranquilizer rifle/stun gun. Sometimes after a shot, the icon on the enemy is a skull, and not “Zzz”. No one knows 100% whether this has an effect, but it’s better to replay the moment if this happens"

This happens often, sometimes even when dragging corpses after loading/unloading a save, the best way is to pay attention to the score line, if there is “mercy” - everything is in order, the game only takes into account stun/sleep.

I would like to add one more point - the final battle, when there was a discharge across the floor, I threw a gas mine to the distraught guards. in the end, death was pinned on me (apparently when they swallowed the gas, the discharge finished them off at the same time). The most important thing is that in this case there is no way to track it - points are not given for those who are mad and there is no line for receiving points. verified - after replaying the battle the trophy dropped out. It’s best to lure them out in the finale and wait until the discharge kills the crazed ones (you need a “jump” in the implants).

The trophy is actually very easy! I got it when I opened the sneak trophy in stealth mode, I walked around everyone carefully, I didn’t have any clashes with the enemy, and when they did, I used a tranquilizer rifle or stunned them! To make it even easier, you need to fully pump up the battery, completely stealth, for bosses typhoon, Icarus will help cut it off in a couple of moments, the whole hack is because you sometimes need to turn off the robots! then protection from electricity will help with 3 bosses.

Let me clarify - there are only two types of weapons in the game with a non-lethal effect: a tranquilizer pistol that works like a stun gun and a tranquilizer rifle that shoots darts. Use only them, and take one lethal weapon with you for boss battles (just don’t forget about ammo!)

There is also a PEPS cannon , which can stun a small group of enemies at a time.
