Oh, you can fail it. I've stumbled across several tries before I did mine where he took Josie out in the hall and got them both killed.

The responses do not have the same effects for everyone, I tried reason, empathise, reason and it didn't work.

Dang, now I wish I remembered what exactly I did... But I got it right without really trying and just did what made sense... Putting me in his shoes. I am 100% sure I did not choose the same thing all three times. Reason, Empathize, Reason sounds very familiar.

The above choices did not work on the hardest difficulty, but Empathize 3 times did. I would add to your guide that the selection may not work.

After the cutscene with Sanders:

Free Josie (or Rescue)
Select Empathize for all options

Achivement unlocks - Sanders leaves and lives to see another day (possible later game interaction). Josie saved.

This is the only method that worked for me. I tried two above with no results. This way popped first try. Thanks.

Empathise, empathise, empathise is the only thing that worked on both of my playthroughs. You get different reactions to your responses depending on how you play the game.

I'm 99% sure I did reason, empathize, reason. I'm about to reload a save and check... Maybe I'll try both solutions. I am 100% certain I DID NOT choose the same option all three times... But it seems there is more than one way that works.

I think it depends on if you save the hostages or not. When I did not, I could choose empathize three times. I actually forgot about the hostages, so I went back to save them, and when I did, the dialogue was different. I did empathize two times, then reason. I had to insult him a bit, but hey. Everyone lived.

This trophy is available in Chapter 2.

Without giving too many spoilers away, you will be near the end of the mission and will confront Zeke Sanders who is holding a hostage, Josie, and you must try to free her.

Zeke will ask you questions and you must choose the correct choices so he lets her go.

Choose:
Reason
Empathize
Reason

The trophy will pop during the cutscene when he leaves her and runs out of the room.

Missable! Zeke Sanders is the terrorist leader of the Purity First group that takes over the Sarif Manufacturing Plant in the 1st Story Mission. You will encounter him near the end together with Josie Thorpe and engage him in Social Combat.

Possible Correct Answers:
Try To Free Josie, Reason, Empathize, and Reason.
Try To Free Josie, Empathize, Empathize, and Reason

This will end the mission without a fight and award you the trophy.

*Save*

At the end of the Sarif Manufacturing Plant mission, you'll come in contact with Zeke Sanders. Before you head through the double doors make sure you make a save.

You'll now be presented with a dialogue challenge. To free the hostage without any harm coming to her, you'll need to pick the right questions and answers. Below is the right choices to pick:

  • Try to Free Josie
  • Reason
  • Empathize
  • Reason

We watch the cut-scene and start a conversation with Sanders. It took me four sentences to persuade him to let the hostage go. Their order:

1. Try to release

2. Sympathize

3. Draw a conclusion

4. Draw a conclusion

PS Apparently, the “draw a conclusion” option is the main one for successfully completing the dialogue, because the first two phrases did not make Sanders doubt his actions.

For me, Sanderson released the hostage with this situation:

1 Try to release

2 Sympathize

3 Sympathize

4 Sympathize
