This achievement can be tricky, as there are a lot more enemies than standard.
You should be able to get this achievement in any mode (Sectors and Cycles included) but I got it in Quadrants.
In Quadrants, you should be able to get the achievement without needing to last the full 3 minutes. I only lasted 2:29 and I got over 600k, I didn't even get to the super mode which you get in the last 30 seconds and that gives you the most points.
The longer you last, the higher your multiplier and the quicker you get points. Even 5 seconds could mean the difference to you making it or not, so remember that and fight to the death!
You may find the Sectors and Cycles easier, but dying does cost you points.
I found going around collecting the blast pickups to charge it up, charging my gun (you do this by moving and not firing) when you get space from the enemies and using my blasts as soon as I get the red enemies that shoot you very useful tactics, also using blasts against the big red ship that shoots you when you shoot at it.
If you lose the shield it is also a good priority to try and get your shield back by collecting the moving icons around the screen. Personally I just stick to the Vulcan weapon but if you want to use/try the others you can.
In the help section on the menus, it does state that you get double points while you have a shield, it also tell you that you get double points when you collect extra energy on top of your blasts, I'm assuming that means that when you have 3 fully charged blasts (the maximum you can have), then you get extra points.
It also tells you about each enemy and what they do, maybe worth taking a look if you're confused by what each one does.
Another tip is if you do attempt this on Quadrants, it might be worth restarting until you get a layout you like the look of, the layouts are random and this can affect the way the game is played.

Scoring in Elite works the same as in Standard, but you do earn slightly more points on this harder difficulty. As you won't likely be playing Elite by default, you will need to devote a run in whichever mode you like best. For the easiest time I would recommend Sectors. You should be over 500,000 early into Sector II.
