How to unlock the The Professional achievement in DiRT 3 - Definitive Guide

The Online Pass IS required to play online.

Obvious what to do but ill still explain:
Select Multiplyer from the main menu then Xbox Live. (The game will now connect you to the dirt servers)

Now select Pro Tour (not Jam Session) doesnt matter if its solo or team and the mode doesnt matter, once the race is over the achievement will pop so long as you survive till the end of the race, crashing out voids this.

If you're feeling lucky you could try and get one of the following achievements at the same time:
DiRT 3Flag StealerThe Flag Stealer achievement in DiRT 3 worth 50 pointsSteal the flag from the opposing team 5 times in a game of Transporter (Pro Tour)
DiRT 3King of the RoadThe King of the Road achievement in DiRT 3 worth 45 pointsWin an Xbox LIVE race in Hardcore Mode
DiRT 3Steer HunterThe Steer Hunter achievement in DiRT 3 worth 42 pointsComplete a game of Invasion without any negative points (Pro Tour)

I picked Hardcore mode, was destroyed by another player at the beginning, I stayed until the end but no achievement^^
So maybe you could add that one has to "stay alive" until the end x)

Is this achievement even still obtainable? When I go to the lobby no one ever joins. If I set up a game session would that work? And how many players would be needed to start up a Pro Tour event?

If you look at the recent winners it seems it is still obtainable.

From the main menu, select "Multiplayer", then "Xbox Live", and select "Pro Tour". After that you can select any discipline and complete a race to gain the achievement. Try starting on Hardcore Mode or Party Mode for chances at the other achievements.

There are two ways to search. Pro Tour is more structured, ranked events if you like and Jam Session is user created events so the rules can be drastically different. For this just search for any pro tour discipline that you fancy and complete your first race. The trophy will pop regardless of the result.

Simply complete a race online in PRO Tour mode, in any discipline.

It's not necessary to win.
