How to unlock the Master Builder achievement in Dragon Age: Inquisition - Definitive Guide

Contrary to popular belief you don't have go create a weapon... even an upgrade will do.

I created a "Masterwork Notched Staff Grip" with just 7 Dragon Webbing and the achievement popped.

It has been noted, by mosin360 in the comments that it doesn't need to be a higher level schematic, just use Tier 4 materials only in the crafting process.

ADDITIONAL: For those who may have missed out on this and can no longer gather top level materials as all Dragons have been slain... in The Descent DLC there is a huge stash of materials early on at the first camp in a large pot to help restock your supplies.

Always good to see an explanation for a negative vote... sarcasm off.

I can confirm that this works. Easiest way to get the achievement.

How did you get the crafting recipe?

Just stumbled across it during the course of general play... would have tried other upgrades but as the Achievement had already popped I can't say for sure if they would work as well.

Just save before crafting an upgrade and if it doesn't work reload.

Oh I get it, you just have to use the tier 4 materials, I'll try that tomorrow.

Awesome idea! Popped it with a tier 1 staff grip (2 dragon scales, 2 webbing) - piece of cake.

I think that's the general idea of the Achievement... using Tier 4 materials in every crafting slot... nowhere does it say that it has to be a weapon.

What I initially thought was that it had to be a tier four recipe when it actually can be any tier as long as you use the tier 4 materials. I won't bother to make a new solution but it warrants mention in your solution.

Not really... if you had the materials I can't see why it shouldn't be done before you reach Skyhold.

It can be done anywhere that you can craft an item.

It's missable if you use all your tier 4 materials to craft other things.

Never accused you of anything... I misread the comment... as far as I can remember Tier 4 materials were generally equipment gathered from Dragon Kills... and with close to a dozen of those around then there are plenty of chances to gather more as you play the game.

At the same time it's not something you can try to unlock by crafting other objects... once it's been won then you can't check to see if it would work crafting something else.

Yeah there's definitely a lot of room for error. Slaying all of the dragons looks like the last thing that most people do.

If you kill them all then there should be no shortage of items... there are three close together in one area that get progressively harder if you start with the one on the right... but they offer up a good amount of material when killed.

You can also buy them at the Black Emporium, and the table in the descent sells a large amount of them as well. Though the pot in the descent you mention should be enough to make 1 thing.

I seem to remember getting a good amount of materials from the pot in The Descent... more than enough for several items... in terms of this Achievement you only need a few pieces as you don't have to craft something big... just use only top level materials.

Haven't explored The Black Emporium much... downloaded it after I'd completed Jaws of Hakkon, and only paid a quick visit prior to starting The Descent.

Random down vote over 7 years after the game released with no explanation... what was the problem? Too dumb to follow a simple instruction?

I’m not a random downvote ( just felt like saying that)
Just wanted to ask; I’m on my first play through. I haven’t really explored outside of the hinterlands & the storm coast. Can I visit the decent DLC and whatever materials I gather there, do you think they’d be available in the main story? Just asking, I’m loving the game and not wanting to spoil it for myself by being too overpowered or ruining the story. Was just looking to gather some cooler stuff really.

Like a lot of these games the better stuff appears further on in the game... anything that can be bought in the DLC will appear in the game at some point.

It's been years since I went near this, but I seem to remember you have to kill Dragons to get the good stuff... some are more powerful than others, so there will be one that you can take down reasonably early on... I think they used them as a way to keep under-levelled players out of some later story areas.

Define "Other Things" as I, and several others, have crafted non weapon items and not had a problem with the achievement popping.

I didn't give you the negative vote. I was just saying that it is missable by crafting an item with tier 4 materials AND lower tier materials. This will not unlock the achievement but will use up your tier 4 materials. From what I understand tier 4 materials are not renewable. Therefore you could have a save where all your tier 4 materials have been used, but you have not used them all on the same item.

For this achievement I made a sword out of Dragon webbing, Dragon scales, and Dragon bones. These are the only Tier 4 materials in the game, and to get them you have to kill dragons. The higher the level of the dragon the more of these material you will get. For example: The Ferelden Frostback, Hinterlands, gave me 4 bone, 2 scales, and 2 webbing, around level 12, while the The Kaltenzahn, Emprise du Lion, gave me 13 bone, 8 scales, and 9 webbing, around level 21.

NB: The first (Ferelden Frostback) dragon's tier 4 loot is variable: Dragon Webbing (1-5); Dragon Scales (1-5); Dragon Bone (1-5). The OP got lucky to get 8 tier 4 materials - I only got 6! 😿😸
Also, killing dragons is the only way to get the required tier 4 materials - the Black Emporium, etc, sell the materials but are via bought DLC.

You can also get them from the Black Emporium later in the game and from the the shop in the Winter Palace during the Trespasser DLC if you messed up and used them all.

'Master Builder': "Craft an item from Tier 4 materials..."

The quickest and easiest way to get this achi is by making the Curved Staff Grip (or other upgrade with '2-2' materials), as this is one of the few items (mage staff upgrade) that can be made from the materials from killing just one dragon (the easiest/earliest dragon). However, the first dragon's tier 4 loot is variable*: Dragon Webbing (1-5); Dragon Scales (1-5); Dragon Bone (1-5).

1. Kill the Fereldan Frostback dragon (level 12, vulnerable to ice/cold), north of the Dusklight Camp, either by levelling up and upgrading, or looking up exploits (a mage can attack from the battleground entrance with impunity, or you can use the Skyhold Undercroft storage chest to duplicate your best armour/weapons for all your team, and duplicate Amulets Of Power till you've unlocked every attack ability - simply press A+B on the storage item to duplicate it). NB: You'll get the 'Wyrmslayer' achi for killing the dragon.
2. Provided the dragon loot contains 2 Dragon Webbing and 2 Dragon Scales, buy the Curved Staff Grip schematic cheaply from the Dwarven Bookseller in Redcliffe, Hinterlands (if you don't already own it, and check at the 'Craft Weapons' bench what items you can make, but it's likely to be one requiring '2-2' materials, and I only had one possibility).
3. Travel to the 'Craft Weapons' bench (Undercroft) and save - you can then use the 2 Dragon Webbing and 2 Dragon Scales you got* from the dead dragon to make the Curved Staff Grip, then reload after the achi pops so as not to waste those materials.

Choose an item with two upgrade slots to do this quickest. Once you have enough Tier 4 materials to upgrade said item, do so to unlock the achievement. This is more easily completed once you have started hunting dragons and have an abundance of their crafting materials to spare.

Save beforehand and load after unlocking if desired.

Every materials has a Tier tied to it. You can check the tier by reading the material description at the bottom of the screen in the crafting materials inventory. Tier 4 is the highest Tier and there are only three Tier 4 materials: Dragon Bones, Dragon Scales and Dragon Webbings. All of these only drop from Dragons. For locations on where to find Dragons, please see the Dragons' Bane trophy.

Once you've acquired some Tier 4 materials, go to a blacksmith and choose to craft a weapon or armor. Helmets are your best choice if you don't have many Tier 4 materials or don't want to waste them, since these only have two upgrade slots. Select the slots, insert the Tier 4 materials (check the bottom description for the Tier rank) and press to craft it.

If you don't want to lose your Tier 4 materials, save before doing this and reload once you have the trophy. You can also use a duplication exploit to get more Tier 4 materials. See the Inquisitor trophy on how to do this.
