How to unlock the Winter's End achievement in Dragon Age: Inquisition - Definitive Guide

This achievement is 'Story' related, as such I will not be using spoiler tags. This is your warning.

This achievement is earned for completing the final quest of the DLC - "Hakkon Wintersbreath". This quest starts as soon as you finish "On Ameridan's Trail".

This quest is solely a boss fight with Hakkon Wintersbreath, who is a Frost High Dragon.
I didn't fight him on a high difficulty, but from my experience in fighting all the other High Dragons on Nightmare, here's what I did.

- Firstly, all the enemies in this DLC seemed to do way higher magic damage than anything I've seen. As such, you'll probably want some Frost Resistance Tonics. There is a recipe in the Old Temple, at the end of the left path as soon as you enter.
- I personally also always use Regeneration tonics. The recipe was from speaking to the alchemist in Haven the first time, so you may have missed it. The fully upgraded version has a healing aura, so it's good for keeping your people up.

- When I fight dragons, what I do is bring 1 tanking warrior (me) and 3 mages.
- I crafted all 3 mages a staff that would be good against the Dragon, which in this case would be fire.
- I then just kept the mages together and made sure to constantly switch to them so they keep their barriers up.
- If you only have 2 mages, I'd bring Varric. If you have less than that you're going to have to make do with whoever you can. Just use either Dragon Slaying or Fire runes if you can help it.

The fight starts with Hakkon talking to you on a cliff while many 'Gibbering Frost Horrors' attack you. This is essentially Hakkon's equivalent of the drakelings that most other Dragons spawn.
Other than that the fight pretty much works like many other Dragon fights.

His attacks.
- Frost Breath
- The wind cyclone that damages anyone outside it as well as pulling you close
- Stomps/swipes/all that jazz
- Can take off and fly around while shooting Ice Balls at you.
- Can land on the upper podium, where he'll summon more horrors as well as shoot Ice Balls at you.
- Stunning Screech
- Summoning more Horrors.
- When he's weak, he'll move up to the slightly raised platform and you have to follow him.

Pretty much all you want to do is make sure your mages are sticking together so they can barrier each other, and then have them move close to the boss whenever he does the wind attack. Then send them back away when he's finished.

Malazan - Hakkon counts towards the Dragon's Bane achievement (kill 10 high dragons).

Putting aside the kill 10 high dragons achievement. Since some have their counter at 9/10 dragons killed when they have in fact killed all 10 dragons. Would this count towards that achievement for killing the dragon on top of getting the achievement for killing him. I'm just curious if anyone can confirm that.

I know which dragon fucked the counter on my game and it's a little frustrating. As I haven't tried the save game before killing the dragon method. So just curious.

I can confirm Hakkon DOES count for Dragon's Bane. I had my savegame glitched at 9/10 and when he died the achievement popped.

The fight will be found next to the Boat Landing location where you traveled to the lonely island in the bottom right corner of the map.

The boss uses ice attacks and is weak to fire. It also stuns you with its yell and releases waves of small lurker enemies. The boss was level 25 when I beat it but the level might be different for others.

This is the list of main storyline quests and their order. My recommendation would be to do the quests in the exact order listed below thereby satisfying the requirements to proceed along with the story.

For the most part the game is very good about providing quest trackers on the map and guiding you where you need to go. Do not forget about the Search ability via !

  • Jaws of Hakkon
    Automatic active quest after entering Frostback Basin the first time.
     
  • Avvar Allies
    Automatic active quest that starts after Jaws of Hakkon is complete.
     
  • Storvacker Caged
    Quest becomes available after Avvar Allies is complete.

    Given by Thane Svarah Sun-Hair in Stone-Bear Hold. Initially you will see a rock climbing event when you first enter the town. She will be standing opposite from it on a small wooden platform. After that she will be sitting on her throne inside of the small cave next to this area.
     
  • The Basin Beckons
    Automatic quest, starts after Jaws of Hakkon is complete.
     
  • Worthy of Publication
    Automatic quest, starts after The Basin Beckons is complete.
     
  • What Yet Lingers
    Automatic quest, starts after The Basin Beckons is complete.
     
  • On Ameridan's Trail
    Quest becomes available after Worthy of Publication and What Yet Lingers are complete.

    Available from Thane Svarah Sun-Hair in Stone-Bear Hold.

    Note: The floor switch puzzle that you encounter during this quest is NOT required in order to complete the quest. It is for grabbing loot only!
     
  • Ameridan's End
    Quest becomes available after Storvacker Caged and On Ameridan's Trail are complete.

    Available from Thane Svarah Sun-Hair in Stone-Bear Hold.

    Note: The first area of the Old Temple has a locked door. After entering the Old Temple, the first right you can take has some crates next to an unlit brazier. The key is on these crates (you can visually see it), but you cannot actually pick it up unless you use the Search () function.

    The Historian  trophy will pop as soon this quest completes.
     
  • Where Once We Walked (optional)
    Automatic quest, starts after Ameridan's End is complete.

    Whilst optional, doing this quest gives a great (+5) permanent bonus to your stats and does not take very long.
     
  • Hakkon Wintersbreath
    Automatic quest, starts after Ameridan's End is complete.

    The Winter’s End  trophy will pop as soon this quest completes.
