How to unlock the Traveler achievement in Dragon Age: Origins - Definitive Guide

Hey, first of all thanks to TA Member 'McGubbalo' for finding the list of the 23 locations required (and also, by extension, the person who wrote that list to begin with) for this achievement, but I've been spending some time with that guide, a brand new Dragon Age playthrough, and a lot of Pepsi (for tha sugazzzz) so I thought I'd make it a little more reader-friendly along the way. (I apologise if this rubs anyone the wrong way)

Ok, so as mentioned above, you only actually need to visit 23 locations (the 23rd is inevitable, as are a few of the others) for this achievement, and only one can be missed (#1) so if you've got a pre-Landsmeet save (provided you encountered Leliana in the Dane's Refuge Tavern) you're good to go with that one, but I started a whole new file to make sure I could finally lay this one to rest.

(Note: My descriptions are - for the most part** - made redundant by simply entering the town in question, bringing up the map, and seeking out the following maptags. I guess they're there for people who, err, didn't use their map...?)

Oh, and SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS - You were warned.

~ Lothering ~

#1. Dane's Refuge - This is the tavern in Lothering where you encounter Leliana. Hard (maybe impossible?) to miss, but if you're going for this achievement, make sure you visit ASAP. Lothering is consumed by the blight early on, and cannot be returned to.

~ Redcliffe ~

#2. Blacksmith - This building, labelled "Blacksmithy" is just off the town square. (The area around the fire where you first enter Redcliffe proper.) You are directed to it in an early quest (the darkspawn attack on the town.)
#3. Dwyn's Home - To the south-east of the town, on the complex of jetties suspended over the water. You are also directed to this location in the attack on Redcliffe.
#4. Kaitlyn's Home - Again, just off the town square. West of Dwyn's Home, your map will help you locate it.
#5. Kaitlyn's Home (Upstairs) - Obviously, just head upstairs in Kaitlyn's Home, sit through a load screen... Aaand, head back downstairs again, 'notha load screen.. (Maybe I should have this game installed?).
#6. Tavern - Easy to miss, this one. It's away from Redcliffe proper, up in the hills on the way to the World Map.
#7. General Store - Another quite missable one, it's south-west along the jetties from Dwyn's Home.

~ Orzammar ~

#8. Proving Grounds - I'm convinced that this refers to the entrance complex before the Proving arena proper, because the related questline can be completed without ever stepping foot in the arena. However, if you want to be sure, and have already completed the related questline, the arena is accessable via a small side-tournament given by a Dwarf within the Proving complex (labelled Proving Armsman). Simply talk to him, take part in a fight, and voila, you've set foot in the proving grounds.
#9. Shaperate - The Shaperate is located in the Diamond Quarter. It is accessable the moment you set foot in Orzammar.
#10. AND #11. Shop - The code is unspecific about WHICH shops must be visited, but I have deduced that one is in the Commons, and the other is in Dust Town. However, to be sure, simply make a thorough sweep of Orzammar (Dust town and The Diamond Quarter included) and enter all available buildings to ensure you check these two.

!! UPDATE : The two shops in question are, without a doubt, FIGOR'S IMPORTS (located in the Commons, it appears to be locked until you've completed some Orzammar main quests.) and ALIMAR'S EMPORIUM (located in Dust Town.) !!

~ Denerim ~

#12. The Pearl - Accessible via the Denerim City map. (The Denerim City Map is accessible via attempting to leave Denerim Market District.)
#13. Gnawed Noble Tavern - Located in Denerim Market District, to the south.
#14. Wonders Of Thedas - Located in Denerim Market District, south west of the Gnawed Noble.
#15. Warehouse - Located in Denerim Market District. (Note, you do NOT need to enter the Warden's Cache (The hidden, inaccessible room hidden behind the bookcases.) for this achievement, merely entering the Warehouse is enough.)
#16. Wade's Emporium - Located in Denerim Market District, centre of the area map.
#17. Dirty Back Alley - As with Locations #18 and #19, this area of the Denerim City Map is only accessible via the Chanters Board Quest "Back Alley Justice."
#18. Dark Alley - See Above.
#19. Rundown Back Street - See Above.
#20. Orphanage - In the Elven Alienage, accessible via Denerim Market District OR Denerim City Map. This location is only available after you have met with Arl Eamon and made your way to the Landsmeet. Upon rescuing Queen Anora, she will inform you of 'Unrest In The Alienage' whereupon you will have an opportunity to visit this location. In the Alienage you will find 'Ser Otto' who, after a little investigation, needs leading through the orphanage.

~ Haven ~

#21. Villager House - To your immediate left as you enter, this empty house is the first structure you will encounter.
#22. Village Shop - This building is directly in front of you as you crest the first hill in Haven, past the Villager House. ( ** This is the only accessible structure in the game to not have a maptag. However, I believe this building may be involved in the main quest anyway.)

~ Final Battle ~

#23. Fort Drakon Rooftop - This location is only accessible in the endgame, whereupon you fight the Archdemon. If you have followed the guide, this achievement should pop on the load screen leading to the Rooftop. Congratulations ^_^

This guide is awesome. Just to give an idea, I loaded up my pre-landsmeet save (which everyone should have hopefully) and went back through all of the locations listed here. It only took about 45 minutes to go through all of that then plow through Fort Drakon and up to the rooftop. The achievement popped after I fully zoned and was fighting the Archdemon.

So, you do not need to go into all the sections of the fade? I've heard so many people say you need to go to all the parts of the fade in the Circle Mage Tower quest, but according to this you don't. Can anyone confirm?

Just to be safe I would do that. B/c I had followed this guide to the letter and it didn't pop. So the next time I play I'm going EVERYWHERE. Nice guides though;)

Yes! This guide worked for me. But I will say this. I went to all the sections of the fade in the Circle of Magi Tower, but I did NOT enter the fade in the quest in Redcliffe (*small spoilers* the one where you have the option to kill the possessed kid, or enter the fade and sacrifice the mother). I am also pretty sure I went to all the sections in the Brecillian Forest.

There is another one in "Deep Roads", it's called "Aeducan Thaigh".. You can enter the area right after Deep Roads are unlocked.. don't know if this area is necessary for the cheevo, but it's missable! It depends on which side you choose (Harrowmonth or Behlin).. Hope this helps..

Aeducan Thaigh is passed through as part of the Dwarf Noble origin story. So if you happen to have a dwarf noble character you'll have already set foot in there

By Ethigy on 22 Jan 2020 02:20
For gaining access to Figor’s Imports, you need to deal with Jarvia at her Hideout.

Correction: it unlocks after Harrowmont or Behelens first quest in supporting them for king.

For the Proving Grounds, you can get the illegal fights by speaking to the 'Proving Armsman' hiding in the northern most room in 'The Proving Grounds > Orzammar Proving'. I know this is what the guide states but I was wondering why the 'Proving Master' wasn't the one giving the fight opportunities.

Just achieved at 92% world cleared. I stepped foot in all 23 area's ( did not run around in ) went into the fade for Connor, did not do Leliana's side quest but did Morgan, Sten and Alister's. Thanks for the guide and hope I could clear anything up that wasn't said.

Hopefully the World Explored percentage does not matter.

You have a choice when you meet Ser Cauthrien - fight or surrender. I chose to fight and my percentage was at 75%. I then reloaded and surrendered and was taken to the fort. My percentage increased to 77%, but the fort is not on this list. I have reloaded my 75% save.

Edit: can confirm you don’t need to go to the fort. I was at 94% prior to going to the last area.

THE definitive guide!!! Taken directly from the lines of code for the PC version (not by me), here are the only locations (23) you need to unlock this achievement. And yes, you must do it all in one playthrough. Hopefully you have a save point from right before the Landsmeet. The only location you can't return to is Lothering.

Lothering:
#1. lot120ar_danes_refuge (where u meet Leliana).

Redcliffe:
#2. arl120ar_blacksmith
#3. arl130ar_dwyns_home
#4. arl140ar_kaitlyn_home
#5. arl141ar_kaitlyn_upstairs
#6. arl150ar_tavern
#7. arl170ar_general_store

Orzimmar
#8. orz220ar_shop
#9. orz260ar_proving
#10. orz310ar_shaperate
#11. orz420ar_shop (not sure which 2 shops this refers to, but swing by Dust Town to be sure.)

Denarim:
#12. den100ar_brothel (Tell 'em Tubby sent you.)
#13. den220ar_noble_tavern
#14. den230ar_wonders_of_thedas
#15. den260ar_warden_cache (Duncan's Shield quest).
#16. den280ar_smithy (The drake scale guy).
#17. den950ar_alley_justice_1 (Chanter's Board quest).
#18. den951ar_alley_justice_2
#19. den952ar_alley_justice_3
#20. den960ar_orphanage (Blind Templar quest)

Haven:
#21. urn120ar_village_house
#22. urn130ar_village_shop

Climax Battle on the Roof:
#23. cli220ar_fort_roof_1

The Achievement should pop about the time you see the Archdemon.

Hope this will work, I'm really sick to go through all over again with the same character see if I missed something. On the list I'm sure that I've never been to the orphanage in denerim I did it. Just in case I'll go see the other ones. This is my last achievement too, hope it will work !

This is the way to do it.

I just did using a save I had before the landsmeet and it worked. One detail someone that wants to do this should know : You do NOT need to visit the actual cache in the warden cache, just the location. I wasn't not able to trigger the quest that allows you to move the bookshelf to go further in the warehouse and I got the achievement anyway, so if you have trouble triggering the quest, you really shouldn't bother!

Finally!

The two shops in Orzimmar are the emporium in Dust Town, and rare imports shop in the Commons.. It will have been one of these two places I hadn't gone if it's as Dr Worm Buffet says. I'd say the Tavern in Redcliffe is easy to miss, only my first, fourth & fith play characters went there, maybe one of the Haven buildings too.. everything else I did everytime...

The achievement popped for me at the very start of the little cutscene final battle with the Archdemon starts.

Double checked each of these locations and as predicted the achievement hit as soon as I got to the roof.

I have definitely not been to some of the areas noted in other guides (gotta save something for the next playthrough). 93% explored according to the stats. Thumbs up here!

Couple of notes. I think the Brothel is actually the Pearl, don't recall going to any other. I think the Duncan's Shield quest comes from rescuing a fellow Grey Warden in Fort Drakken but the location it refers to is the Warehouse in Denerim (not sure if you have to go into the back room although I did).

I assume:

#16. den280ar_smithy = Smart-ass blacksmith that has a receptionist.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Completion percentage has nothing to do with this achievement. There is a simple checklist of 23 locations that you need to visit, that is all. There are plenty more places that other guides have falsely included, which you do not need for this achievement. You do not need 100% for this achievement.

By Bubbelebuh on 13 Mar 2010 17:10
Hmm.. what do you mean by "finished all the games"?? This must all be done in one playthrough, with only one character. Otherwise, the most easy to miss are: #'s 1 (missable, can't go back in standard game), 5 (must go upstairs where the chest is), 6 (upper right hill), 10 (not necessary for story), the 2 shops in Orzimmar (not sure which 2- go to them all, especially in Dust Town), and the various side missions in Denarim (especially the Orphanage).

Hope this helps. Fortunately, it doesn't take long to go back and double-check locations; it's the part where you gotta go back up to the final battle roof that is the hassle. Also, some people "branch off" different save slots so you can get the different achievements without having to play all the way through multiple times, but this could mess up your checklist if you do it wrong.

I just want to add something to the already guides up here. I have done this 2 times over with these guides and the ones online and I never got traveler to unlock for me. I have also noticed that some others have had the same issue in the comments and I want to add a few areas I went to that I usually didn't go and it gave it to me in the end.

Get leliana to talk about her past and Majoline. theres a guide already up to help with the romancing of Leliana, In denerim theres a room that majoline is in that is only accessable once leliana talks about her past with her and after you get attacked by assassins who give you a note to that house.

When you have the option to kill or save Conner from Red Cliffe. Choose to enter the fade, ( I dont know if it counts but it wont hurt to just go in to be safe )

also in Denerim you need to talk to a guy in the center of the market district with a name like Ignacio or something. he starts the quest line "Trial of the Crows". there is 2 areas that open up to assassinate some guys as part of the quests.

I did just those 3 along with going to every door / room in every location and it worked fine.

~~Also I will point out as I have not seen a percentage of what you should have to get the achievement posted anywhere.. before the landsmeet I had the world uncovered 77%. be sure to save pre-landsmeet so if you didnt get it, you can always retry without restarting the game like I had too. by the end of the game my % was 92 and it unlocked.~~

I Hope this helps some of you who used these guides and did not get the achievement... Just remember to always open your map and look at every possible room / door. even floors count..

(Edited) I want to also add the 3 DLC areas do not count at all in this even if you have it. I got Shale during my run but didnt go to the other 2 locations and I got it to unlock,

I don't understand why this is negative. Good tips in my book!

Thank you for your guide. Also, dont know if it helps, but just before entering the area at the end with the dragon, I had 89% completion. And then the achievement pop. So, if at that point, you do not have 89%, chances are that you will not get the achievement. Hope it helps somebody.

In order to find your current percentage of map cleared:

Open your map/inventory.
LT to Current Quests (far left menu)
D-pad right to Heroic Accomplishments
Scroll down with the right stick under Party Accomplishments
"World explored" is the second to the bottom on this list.

You're welcome guys. I figured I would try to explain every detail as possible since I literally beat this game 4 times start to finish with only this achievement remaining.. it was a frustrating one to get and every guide I looked at didnt help since some things was not noted. All I can say is the best tip that is given in my guide is the percentage at the landsmeet since from that point you can access every area.. but the moment you start it you are practically screwed. so making a save at that location incase anyone messes up 1 small thing is a HUGE time saver. :P

This has to be done in one playthrough. If you missed Dane's Refuge on your first one, you'll have to start a fresh playthrough.

Easy setup: Start as a mage, play through the origin story in the Circle Tower, then talk to Duncan. Start the Tainted Blood quest. Collect just the vials, return and keep turning the quest in to grind up to level 20. Now, purchase Group Heal, Group Revive and whatever else you need. Collect the treaties and continue on to Lothering.

Advantage: You have two mages in your party, you and Morrigan. Now, both of you may equip Group Heal. This will make the final battle a lot easier.

Now visit the following other locations:
Redcliffe:
- Blacksmith - You'll enter this as part of the Arl of Redcliffe quest line.
- Dwyn's Home - You'll visit this during the attack on Redcliffe.
- Kaitlyn's Home - West of Dwyn's Home off the town square.
- Tavern - This is uphill from the town across from the world map.
- General Store - Southwest along the jetties from Dwyn's Home

Orzammar:
- Proving Grounds - You simply have to set foot in the entrance complex before the actual arena. This is directly across from the entrance to the Hall of Heroes, where you came from.
- Shaperate - This is located in the Diamond Quarter and is immediately accessible.
- Figor's Imports - This is located in the Commons and can be found immediately upon exiting the Hall of Heroes.
- Alimar's Emporium - This is a shop located in the middle of Dust Town. Dust Town is located on the right side of the Commons.

Haven - On your way to the Urn of Sacred Ashes, you'll come here.

- Villager House - This is to the immediate left as you enter.
- Village Shop - This is up the hill from the house.

Denerim:
- The Pearl - This is accessible via the city map. Just go back and select The - Pearl upon entering the Market District.
- Gnawed Noble Tavern - This is located at the southern end of the market.
- Wonders of Thedas - This is located south west of Gnawed Noble Tavern.
- Warehouse - This is located in the market district
- Wade's Emporium - This is located in the center of the market district.

While you're here, start up the Chanter's Board Quest "Back Alley Justice" and enter the following areas on the city map:

- Dirty Back Alley
- Dark Alley
- Rundown Back Street

Now head to the Elven Alienage accessible via the city map:
- Orphanage - This is only available after you rescue Queen Anora

Final Battle
- Fort Drakon Rooftop - This is only accessible in the endgame where you fight the Archdemon. The achievement should pop here. If it doesn't, simply load up your pre-Landsmeet save and check for what you missed.

I got this list from TA and that poster got it pulled from the PC game code. I would still suggest doing a healthy amount of exploration though. I ended the game with 72% of the world explored.

-Lothering-
1. Dane's Refuge - This is the tavern where you recruit Leliana. You need to enter this tavern before you finish one of the major quest lines because Lothering gets wiped off the map.

-Redcliffe-
2. Blacksmith - This building is labeled 'Blacksmithy' and is located off hte town square. The occupant is a quest target for defending the town,

3. Dwyn's home - This building is located on the piers to the southeast of the town. The occupant is also a quest target for defending the town.

4 and 5. Kaitlyn's home - Off the town square. For whatever reason, the upper and lower level count as separate locations.

6. Tavern - This building is located on the hill right before you descend into the town.

7. General store - This building is also located in the maze of piers.

-Orzammar-
8. Proving grounds - Unsure if this refers to just the entrance complex or to the actual fighting grounds. Both quest lines give you a chance to enter in a bout though so it isn't that hard to get to both spots.

9. Shaperate - This location is in the Diamond Quarter.

10 and 11. - Two shops. These shops are Figor's Imports (within the Commons and locked until an event) and Alimar's Emporium (within Dust Town).

-Denerim-
12. The Pearl - Accessible via the Denerim City map.

13. Gnawed Noble Tavern - This location is in the Denerim Market District.

14. Wonders of Thedas - This location is in the Denerim Market District.

15. Warehouse - This location is in the Denerim Market District. You do not need to enter the secret compartment.

16. Wade's Emporium - This location is in the Denerim Market District.

17, 18, and 19. Dirty Back Alley, Dark Alley, and Rundown Back Street - These locations are accessible via the Denerim City Map AFTER you accept a Chantry Board quest labeled 'Back Alley Justice'

20. Elven Orphanage - During the 'Unrest in The Alienage' quest line, you will meet a templar named Ser Otto. He will give you a quest to investigate and enter the orphanage. You do not need to finish the quest.

-Haven-
21. Villager House - This location is to your left as soon as you enter the village. This house holds the blood stained alter that you need to investigate.

22. Village Shop - This building is in front of you after the first hill in the village. (This building may or may not have a maptag depending on where you are within the 'Sacred Ashes' quest but will remain accessible the whole game.)

-Fort Draken-
23. Fort Drakon Rooftop - This is the final area and where you battle the Archdemon. The trophy popped for me shortly after the loading screen.

One missing from this list. I also needed the Estate at the end of the quest "Crime Wave" for Slim Chaudry in Denerim Market, just outside the chantry.

This has to be done in one playthrough. You'll need to hit every location on the main map, and the sub maps for the Deep Roads and Denerim. You'll need to do every main quest and quite a few side quests to visit all of them.

This trophy was recently confirmed to need the following places by Fleapants on the Bioware forums. Make sure to create an extra save before heading to the Royal Palace during "The Landsmeet". That's the point of no return. If for some reason Traveler doesn't unlock for you, then here is the complete list of locations in the game.

If you still need additional help, ZOLANTON wrote a detailed list of all of the locations in the game here.

Redcliffe:
  • Blacksmith's home
  • Dwyn's home
  • Kaitleyn's home
  • Kaitleyn's home, second floor (ask the boy what he was doing there)
  • Tavern
  • General store
Denerim:
  • The Pearl
  • Gnarled Noble Tavern
  • Wonders of Thedas
  • Warden's Cache (ask Riordan after finding his documents when freeing Anora)
  • Wade's Emporium
  • Dirty Back Alley
  • Rundown Back Streets
  • Dark Alley (the last three are from "Back Alley Justice" sidequest you get from the Denerim chantry)
  • Orphanage in the Alienage
Lothering:
  • Dane's Refuge (this is the tavern where you meet Leliana)
Haven (both of these are easily missed):
  • Haven house near the entrance
  • Haven General Store (at the top of the hill)
Orzammar:
  • Proving Grounds (in the Commons)
  • Shaperate (in the Diamond Quarter)
  • Janar Armorers
  • Figor's Imports (Unlocks after choosing the new king)
Final Battle:
  • Fort Drakon rooftop
All of the above are in addition to the locations in the main story.

Simple. As always the Wiki is your best friend. I used the following page on the Dragon Age Wiki and can confirme this list works a treat;

The most unpleasant thing is that you need to visit all locations in one playthrough. So, you need to visit all the corners of the main map, as well as all the secondary maps on the Underground Paths and in Denerim, and don’t forget to look at each island in the Tower of Mages, when you get into the shadows...
The achievement is easiest to get if you play as a Dalish elf or mage, since at the beginning of the game they gain access to three additional locations, which give an additional 3% of the world.
