How to unlock the Varterral's Fall achievement in Dragon Age: Origins - Definitive Guide

The Varterral is much easier to beat on Hard than the Harvester! Assuming your using a high level imported character all your party should be level 30+ and very tough.

Basially all you need to do is set Finn's tactics to 'Ranged' and set him so he casts 'Heal All' when an ally's health reaches 75% (the default is 50) when you do that he stays near the entrance to the area and never gets hit.

Once that is done your party should move in a start attacking, when the Dragon's spawn take them out yourself and your party should keep attacking the Varterral, once the Dragons are gone switch back and you should take it out no problem.

Using this method with a level 32 Warrior I took it out in about 3 minutes without any of my party ever coming close to dying.

I did this with a Level 21 Origins Rogue in about 5 minutes on Nightmare. Equip 2x Lifegiver (one from Origins and one from Witch Hunt), and Varterral cannot hurt you.

Might be a stupid question but do we have to play through the whole DLC on hard to get this?

No you just have to fight the Vaterral on hard.

You were not lying. This fight was so easy, I felt stupid for not doing this achievement before. fffffff

@KayVonTrarx - No. You just have to play up to and defeat the Varterral to get the achievement.

Personally, all i needed was to set the difficulty too hard, it fell way to easy, i had a 35? i believe the max is? mage a few AOE then single target spells combined with my allies and it died very easy.

Bloody dog got the final hit though.

Cheers for the guide +1, As other comments have said this was actually really easy, especially when compared to the Harvester Boss.

Omg so easy, still haven't beaten the Harvester on hard yet. Seems impossible for my character

Lol, I was playing on hard from the previous DLC, I did the whole dlc and didnt realise at all until I got to the battle. I had a hell lot of troubles with the reaper but this was a piece of cake.

If you want just play through on casual/normal whatever you prefer then when you see the big bug looking creature in a cutscene stop reload your last autosave (which is right before the fight) then change the difficulty to Hard then walk forward and after you kill it the cheevo pops (he's not really hard at all I was a lvl 22 Rouge and had no problem with him just like he said make the mage Ranged and Healer)

You will fight the Varterral at the Dragonbone Wastes. When you first get there, there will be a fight some small dragons, and then one more group of enemies. After defeating them, you should change the difficulty to hard.

The Varterral fight is actually pretty easy on hard as long as you have a high level character. Hybridchld's method is good, so there's no need to repeat it.

Here's a good video showing the fight.

The Varterral is at the end of the Dragonbone Wastes. If you’re concerned because of how difficult the Harvester was on Hard, don’t worry. This thing is much, much easier. Again, switch the difficulty to Hard or Nightmare right before you get to the boss fight (it’ll be right after an autosave point before a huge clearing). Have Finn set to heal everyone in your party. You, Dog, and Ariane hammer away at the Varterral. When the Varterral summons Dragons (which will happen two times), have Ariane go after them. Keep hammering away with Dog. The Varterrel is more annoying in some ways than the Harvester because it heals itself and jumps around a lot. Other than that, it’s a cakewalk.

I want to reassure you right away - this boss is much easier to defeat than the Reaper from the Golems of Amgarrak DLC. During the battle, monitor your squad's health. And also if you smear your weapon with all kinds of poisons, you will defeat Vaterral very quickly.
