The materials the game is referring to, can be found (1) In supply trucks around the map, that need to be connected to a way point system that eventually leads back to your base crystal. (2) In shopping carts dotted around islands. (3) Lumber from trees.
While you are likely going to get this achievement through natural progression as you will need the supply trucks to adequately build up facilities in your base, you can make great strides towards this achievement by cutting down every tree you come across. Hold the gather button as you break the tree and you SHOULD pick up all the lumber and other items that drop from it. You can easily get over 1000 lumber before you leave the first biome
