This is missable I believe. Throughout the game as you explore there will be islands with notes. If an island has a note it will say “notes:1”, “notes:2”. There is no way to know if you got them all(you can read them in your pause menu), so make a mental note(no pun intended I swear!) to ensure you have what you need before you progress into further areas of the game
The notes and game is a bit buggy with its terrain. I would of had 20 notes but several islands had clipping/deformed terrain problems that prevented me from getting them and resources, as in they were under the map. The notes are proximity based and highly noticeable, you’ll get an X prompt, seriously you can’t miss them they stick out like a sore thumb.
So far they seem to have been in relatively “natural” places, houses, etc, as in you might not have to do crazy parkour or use various items in the game to reach certain heights. They haven’t been in the aether or spots like that but I have found some places on the floor and on the side of rocks/caves.

Yes I played through the first season multiple times because I wanted to find out if the note locations are static. For me they were in the same location every time.
I found out that at the very start of the game when you’re following crow, he will hand you the first note but it will be on the wall behind him to read. If you read it, it causes the game to glitch and prevent certain notes from spawning or appearing. I noticed every time you read a note it creates a log, reading multiple times creates a duplicate log which is probably bugging the system. Other than that some are a bit tricky but just keep a close eye. They’ve always been in houses on walls or on floors, only a few were on cave walls/rocks.
TLDR: Don’t read the note behind crow at the start of the game, he gives you it free. Don’t read notes more than once it bugs the other notes.

They normally spawn on stuctures, but the biomes for this game are randomly generated so I cannot tell you exactly where they are.
If you open the map and view the island, it will show you if a note is present on that island or not.
