Decoys draw the attention of enemies and can actually be pretty useful.
1) You will need an advance Curio workshop. You'll unlock this pretty early on and once you have it, you'll need to craft a Decoy. The first time you will need to craft it at the workshop, but after that you can make them on the fly.

4x Twigs
1x Glowstone
10x Charms
2) Stick them around your base. My base was circular so I just made 8 and spread them out evenly. If you hold the placement key, you can see their aggro range.
3) Wait until a raid is about to happen, or if you have raid bait you can induce one on your own terms; but SAVE before hand. As the raid progresses the enemies will be drawn to your decoys. Clear them out and once the raid is over reload your save and do it again.
I use Decoys in natural game play, and find using them to draw the attention of enemies into range of Ballistas and Tesla Coils to be an effective method of base defense. This also allows me to farm for Crystals to level my Drake's up.
HANDY TIP: If a Decoy is about to break, you can pick it up and put it back down and the decoy will be fixed. If you're quick and can push out enough damage, you can clear a raid without losing any decoys, meaning you can just pick them up, put them down, and you've lost nothing.
