How to unlock the Nerds Hate Sunlight achievement in Dungeon Siege III - Definitive Guide

Start the game from the beginning and invite your friend into your private game and progress through the first 5 minutes of the game on tell some bad guy bust through a door kill them and a man will appear in the busted down door for a conversation do not push a button and let the game set for 3 hours and the achievement will be yours, me and my friend did this well i went out and he watched TV, and when i came we both had achievement. We tried playing through but the game would always get freeze at the loading screen or we would lose connection so this is the quickest way to get achievement do to the fact that there are not load screens, no level ups, or equipment screens which the game doesn’t count as time played and you don’t have to worry about freezing and lost connections, also we taped are controllers in the up direction just to make sure and we used wired controllers and play and charge cords i hope this helps cause it sure helped us.
If you have any questions send me a message on my tag thanks.:)

(Update) This method can be done in offline mode with 2 controllers, just sign second controller in as guest and wait the 3 hours.

to emphasize:
(1) wired controllers seem to be a must
(2) cannot "take a break" on either controller
(3) the conversation is with the man named marten guiscard and the screen on which i spent 3 hours displayed the following digalogue:

Marten Guiscard: My name is Marten Guiscard, and I'm a friend of Odo's - and a son of the Legion, like you.

your options are (left) Where is Oldo? and (right) What happened here?

You can do this in any conversation that requires you to choose a response. I just talked to someone that gave me a mission, where the only response was that I hadn't finished it yet and let it go from there.

Just did this online with a friend, we used wired controllers but forgot to rubberband the thumbsticks. It still worked.

I got this in offline co-op and didn't even sign in my second controller at all. Just pressed the start button. I rubberbanded the sticks of both controllers so they were running in circles.

Gather one or more friends and play the game for 3 hours. Choosing "Take A Break" or waiting in the equipment screen will NOT pop the achievement.

thx 2 spit5ire & p1zZaBiT

& update based on Lucienna's comments for Offline play:
"I can confirm that this achievement will unlock if 2 players are playing offline co-op (make sure that the 2nd person is signed in as "guest").
,,,
Because my co-op friend got tired after 2 hours, I taped my controller to have both characters running against a chair in the Meisterhall for the last hour, and it did unlock."

Yeah, I played with Snakeheadfish above and can confirm that this achievement won't unlock if anyone in the party enters their inventory and the group moves along before they are done. In other words, if I took too long equipping my character and the party was already trying to move, it would force me into "take a break" mode.

I appreciate the "take a break" mode, it just stinks that it voids the achievement progress.

So, there's no visiting the equipment screen at all for 3 hours? That will be a small type of torture. If that is the case, couldn't you set up two controllers (wired), start up local co-op and find a place safe enough for the characters to just stand there and walk away from it?

You can use wired controllers to do it, but make sure you rubber-band or ensure that your characters are active. Otherwise the game will detect that you've been away for a while & force your character into "Take A Break" mode.

Can this be done offline on a local screen or does it have to be online even with a local screen??

Not entirely sure, but I don't see why not. The game does allow 2-player local co-op and the achievement requirements did not mention that both players must be online.

no i think you mis-understand,some commenters have stated that during online play entering the equipment screen causes the 'take a break mode ' and voids the achievement,i was just pointing out that while playing local co-op you can spend as much time in menus as you like without the 'take a break' mode taking over, but the time spent in the menus WONT count towards the achievement, however timer will continue where it left off after exiting the menus therefore not voiding the achievement, thats why it took 3:50 in real time

thanks stefb42, so I think in summary, entering an in-game merchant's shop-menu DOES NOT count towards the achievement? Is that what you were trying to explain?

Quick question im rubberbanding two pads now, but when my guys hit a wall the walking animation stops, is this still counting as been active?

confirming that local coop in a conversation works to pop this achievement. has to be a conversation where a response is required. at the response screen, just don't choose anything. i used wired controllers and got the achievement in 3 hours no problem. don't make the mistake i did though - check system settings and make sure your xbox doesn't shut off in one hour!

MCASguru's method works best for obtaining offline. I tried all other methods mentioned in the comments or the solutions. I tried online and offline, nothing worked. Until I tried MCASguru. Thank you for giving your method. So if anyone needs it, do it via MCASguru's method!

I did this coop using two controllers through the first part of the game. In battles I just set up Katherine on a corner and spammed A while I fought the bosses with the man character. If you wipe or manually reload, it does not reset the 3 hour timer.

just a little note, i did MCASguru's solution with a conversation, and used 2 wireless controllers. Although the controllers both shut off, I still got the achievement.

I tried this in offline co-op with a 2nd player signed in to a different account (not guest) and it didn't seem to work until I changed my multiplayer setting from "Offline Game" to "Private Game". Maybe offline only works with guest?

confirming it can be done in local co-op,however your friend is better signing in with their own profile, that way both players get the achievement, you can also spend as much time as you like in equip menus etc as entering the menu in local co-op stops the game for both players without entering take a break mode, the time spent in menus just doesn't count towards the achievement,it actually took us about 3 hours 50 minutes in total to unlock this achievement, but the time on our save when it popped was about 3hrs 1 minute,we played the game right from the beginning

I can confirm that this achievement will unlock if 2 players are playing offline co-op (make sure that the 2nd person is signed in as "guest"). We did enter the equipment/level up screen, but never longer than a minute. Also, there was one point in the game where the AI seemed to haven taken over without no particular reason, but we still got the achievement. Because my co-op friend got tired after 2 hours, I taped my controller to have both characters running against a chair in the Meisterhall for the last hour, and it did unlock.

the time spent in the menus doesn't count towards the achievement, however in local co-op time spent in menus will not void the achievement like it's reported to in online co-op by 'the 8bucks50' (5th commenter),in local co-op the timer will in effect stop when either local co-op player enters a menu and start again where it left off when they leave the menu, that's any kind of menu, merchants shop equipment menu quest menus etc,
we started our session at about 8:20pm,the achievement eventually popped at 12:10am,it took 3hours 50 minutes in real time, our save when it finally popped said we'd been playing 3 hours 1 minute,so the other 49 minutes must have been the time we spent equipping and buying things,it's actually a lot less risky doing it in local co-op,no servers or internet connection or online players to rely on
lucienna (commenter 6) also says to sign player 2 in as a guest,i'm saying if your friend has their own profile they should sign in with that so both players get the achievement

I can confirm that as of 1/13/19, the best way to get this offline would be to use two controllers and go idle in a conversation that requires a conversation choice. It shouldn't take but 5 minutes to get to this point in a new game. It doesn't matter if the controllers turn off; the achievement will still pop. Credit to MCASguru for the comments in other solutions. Happy hunting!

Just wanted to add an additional comment that with backward compatibility it's hard to sign in with a guest account and fortunately it's not necessary.
What is necessary is to disable the "Show me things when idle" as that pauses the game in the background after a certain period of time (found under Settings->Preferences->Idle Options)

As the description states, this needs to be done in one session with the same co-op partner. If you can find someone to play for 3 hours then this trophy will come easily.

Another way is to set up offline co-op and go to an area of the map that is confined with no enemies - the Legion chapterhouse is a good place - then just set up both controllers to move your characters left or right and lock that in, then on one of the controllers lock the camera into a turn. This will mean both characters will run in a circle and the game thinks that both players are there, if you just leave it alone without this the game registers the player as taking a break and becomes computer controlled until the controller is then used again.

For help please check the Boosting Thread.

You need a second pad, first set the timer to turn off the console for 6 hours. Next we get to any NPC with whom you can talk through dialogues. Connect the second pad and start a conversation in two-player mode. As soon as the conversation starts, leave the pads and go to sleep, take a walk, etc. After 3 hours the achievement will pop out. A wired pad is not necessary; the most important thing is to be present during the dialogue while disconnecting the pads.

Getting the achievement with two pads on one console works, but there is one issue. The point is this: turn on the second pad, but don’t connect to the game from it yet, press the guide button and create an additional profile; you don’t need to register the created profile in xbox live. After creating a profile, go into it with the second pad, then press the start button to enter the game as the second player, a character selection menu will appear, select any character and start a dialogue with any NPC who has answer options and sit in the dialogue for 3 hours, after we get the achievement. In order for a second player to appear in the dialogue, you need to move the left stick, then a sign will appear in the form of a circle with the inscription P2 in this circle. If, when connecting the second pad, you first enter the game, select a character, and then enter the created profile, you most likely will not receive the achievement (the first time I entered the game with the second pad, I ended up wasting 3 hours, the achievement did not appear) .
