How to unlock the Last, Best Hope of Humanity achievement in Fallout 3 - Definitive Guide

The best advice I can offer for this achievement is to play the game Good, as it is much easier to get Bad Karma then Good Karma. When you get to Level 19, you can get the other two achievements, "Paradigm of Humanity" (Level 20 Neutral) and "Scourge of Humanity" (Level 20 Bad), as well.

Upon reaching level 19, you can either get more XP until you are just on the brink of Level 20 or you can play it safe, save at the start of the level, and work towards 20 and each side of karma.

To get karma, here are some tips:

For Good karma, give Purified Water to the tramp outside of Megaton. He will be to the right laying on some rocks just outside the gate. You can get purified water from Wadsworth at your house. (NOTE: You will only have a house if you have completed "The Power of the Atom".)

For Bad karma, well... this one is easy! Murder, steal, massacre, hit people, whatever you want to do.

ANOTHER TIP:

A friend of mine recommended saving the "Power of the Atom" quest until you reach one of the levels before those in the achievement (7, 13, 19). Once you get to the level, either blow up the bomb or disarm it, and depending on which, you will get XP and karma for completing the quest. The one problem with this is that you might not have Tenpenny Tower in order to blow the bomb up at level 7.

Good luck!

In case you mess up this Achievement, including:-
Good, Neutral, and Bad.

NOTE #1 Do NOT finish the optional quest; The Power of the Atom where Mister Burke asks to blow up Megaton because you CAN'T do the XP glitch.

External image

Simply start a New Game and buy or find 2 Frag Mines. After that, fast travel to Megaton (you need to discover the location first, for you to fast travel)

https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/e/e7/Mega...

Make your way to Craterside Supply.

https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/8/81/Crat...

Behind the Mercenary standing against the wall, simply go behind him at the other side of the wall and plant a Frag Mine. You have to disarm it quickly before it goes off and then pick it up. (Eventually, you will gain XP a lot faster)

External image

Shortly after when you reach Level 7, at the end of the XP bar (nearly levelled up to Level 8) simply SAVE the game and after that, get Good Karma and do good stuff.

I suggest starting the Church of the Children of Atom quest to gain Good Karma.

https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/6/60/Chil...

Also, donate 100 bottle caps to Confessor Cromwell. Once you have your Good Karma maxed out, keep disarming the Frag Mine to reach Level 8.

External image

Once you have the Protector Achievement, Load the game again from the 1st save and then gain Bad Karma and then reach Level 8 for the Reaver Achievement.

When you gained the Reaver Achievement then Load the game again and do Good and Bad stuff to be Neutral and reach Level 8 and you will unlock the Mercenary Achievement.

You get the idea for reaching Level 14 and Level 20 with Good, Neutral, and Bad by using the XP glitch.

NOTE #2 This trick will also work for you with the other Level Achievements, on the Broken Steel DLC.

NOTE #3 I will advise you to save the game every few minutes. The reason for this is because sometimes people come into the shop and they randomly come up to you and the Frag Mine explodes and kills them. Obviously, it will go pear-shaped for you and you won't be able to do the XP glitch. If this happens, immediately load up your last save.

I hope this helps and if you are confused about the XP glitch, then here is a video explaining to you, what to do.

I also like to thank the YouTube user for uploading their video.

Before you give me a negative vote, please explain yourself why you did it and I will be more than happy to improve my solution. Thank You.

** MINOR SPOILERS BELOW. **

To get this achievement, you need to reach level 20 with positive karma.

Getting to level 20

Straightforward enough, but there are ways to achieve this more quickly. First, avoid companions.

Second, look out for the NPCs who request certain types of items, and then watch to see if redeeming those items provides XP. Two such "standing orders":

* Scrap metal in Megaton. (Easy to find everywhere.)
* Pre-war books at the Arlington Library. (Excellent per-book XP.)

Lastly, I recommend hacking every terminal, picking every lock, and attempting (almost) every speech challenge. All provide nearly guaranteed XP, without the hassle of shooting an Albino Radscorpion or Super Mutant Overlord a half-million times.

Karma

To maximize good karma, always focus on being kind, charitable, avoid killing innocents, and go out of your way to help innocents. (Kill raiders and muties, free/protect wastelanders, etc.)

If you need a karma boost, I have two suggestions:

* At the Church of the Atom (Megaton) or Saint Monica's Church (Rivet City), donate caps. If you have a lot of cash lying around, it will be very easy and quick to get into "positive" karma.
* In Megaton, give away your scrap metal rather than requesting payment. (You still get the XP.)

What i would do is i would get bad karma by murdering and stealing and before the level achievement, save it, get bad karma achievement, then go to the church in either megaton or rivet city (you need alot of caps), then get to neutral, get the achievement, then do the same for good karma :)

If you don't have any problems with a glitch/mechanic abuse, there is a way to get XP relatively quickly after you leave the vault.

The first thing you should keep in mind as you start your game is that it is advisable to keep your character barely good (try stealing things without being caught, saving often, and loading the most recent save when you realize you are neutral) if you are going for all the leveling achievements (the end part of the guide will be assuming you are). Also, make explosives one of your tag skills as you will need a skill of 25 to do this method. Having an intelligence of at least 4 is advisable.

First, go to Megaton and the Craterside Supply (Talk to Lucas Simms at the entrance of Megaton if you are unsure of where this is) and talk to the shop owner, Maria. Tell her you will help with her book and choose to talk about Minefield.

After you finish talking with her, make "The Wasteland Survival Guide" your active quest. then travel to Minefield which should be where your objective marker is. Disarm two mines and fast travel back to Megaton.

Go to the Craterside Supply and make the frag mines you picked up your active weapon. As you walk in, you should see a mercenary leaning on a wall. Head directly behind the wall he is leaning on, crouch, then throw a frag mine and pick it up.

You should keep this process going, getting 5 XP each time you pick up a mine (up to seven with the swift learner perk maxed out). I would advise getting the swift learner perk as quick as possible to increase your speed of leveling up.

One thing to note is that past 5 pm, Billy Crealy will visit the shop and wander, along with his girl. I recomend waiting until 8:00 am when this happens. Eventually, the mercanary will want to go to bed regardless, and you will have to wait until 8:00 am for him to come back.

When your are 35-45 XP from the level you want, then stop. Save, then if you are going for good karma, just keep going until you you level up. If you are going for neutral karma kill both the mercanary and Maria.

If you are going for bad karma, kill the mercanary, then steal everything in the shop. If you are still not bad karma, attempt to hack the computer then back out. Continue to hack in and back out until you are at bad karma or you are confident killing Maria will bring your karma down enough to be bad karma (if she has not run out). If she has ran out, hack the computer succesfully and you will level up.

The video below (which all credit goes to ablestmage on youtube) details the method of throwing the fragmine and picking it up so you can understand. Please leave comments telling me how I can improve my solution. I am always open to suggestions.

EDIT: To those wondering why I "posted the same solution as somebody else", this is why. 1. Most of the leveling achievements don't have that guide and I posted this on ALL the achievements. 2. My guide is more in depth and supports someone who starts a new game solely to get these achievements. Please do not vote down just because there is another similar guide above.

I'd suggest checking out my solution for the "Scourge of Humanity" achievement if you have bad karma and want to also get this achievement. It's another easy way to gain this achievement but the above works also.

Reach Level 20 with Good or higher Karma, the trophy will pop on the Levelling screen where you raise your stats. See the Karma Advice section in the Road Map for important info on managing your saves correctly.

The fastest way to get the Karma trophies:

  1. Make a save before the level you want e.g. at Level 7.
  2. Do something to reduce or increase your Karma to the one you want e.g from Good Karma to Bad.
  3. Level up, get the trophy, rinse and repeat.

Try and stick to being Good as it's a lot better than being bad as it's easier to lower Karma than it is to gain it, however it's your choice.

Easy ways to get Bad Karma:

  • Killing good NPCs.
  • Being a cannibal.
  • Picking good NPCs locks.
  • Stealing good NPCs stuff.

One way to lower your Karma is by repeatedly opening and closing a good NPCs locked terminal. You can just click on the terminal and you will get a message about Bad Karma, back out of the terminal then reopen it and you will get the same message again. Repeat this until you're at the specified Karma status. The terminal trick is the safest way to get Bad Karma but not the fastest, which is to just go on a killing spree somewhere like Megaton or Rivet City.

Easy ways to get Good Karma:

  • Killing Slavers.
  • Doing good deeds for people.
  • Giving the man outside Rivet City, Megaton and Tenpenny Tower Purified Water

Use this method to get your Karma up to good:

Donating to the church in Megaton, this is the best way to get your Karma up. Make sure you have plenty of money to spend 500-1000 caps should do, then keep donating 50 caps to the guy. Your Karma will go up with every donation and can go from Bad to Good in a matter of minutes.

See here for a video explaining another method of getting the Reaver, Mercenary and Protector trophies:

Note: Also see here for additional ways to change your Karma: LINK (credit to frejim and the Fallout Wiki for this info).

If you wish to speed run the Karma trophies then use the Scrap Metal glitch (Fort Independence is a known hotspot for freezing so save before going there):

(Credit to The Infinitiv3 for the video).

An alternative method is available if you have the Mothership Zeta DLC (courtesy of Norgoroth):

I found an xp exploit for the GOTY in Mothership Zeta. After you get Alien Captive Recording #24, there is a room where you can press a switch and spawn cows and right next to it there is a bigger area where you can spawn an endless amount of mobs by pressing the button. Just keep summoning and killing (preferably on Hard or Very Hard) and if your health gets low, then there is an alien health regenerator behind you where you can heal forever and never have to use a health item.

The only problem with this is that you have to come in a high Level with duplicate guns to repair any broken ones and a lot of ammo! I recommend being Lv20+ for this because it will be better for you if you have most of the V.A.T.S. upgrades to increase your accuracy and make it easier for you.

This will only really benefit you if are going for the Lv30 Trophies in the Broken Steel DLC, other wise you're better off using the Scrap Metal exploit we've listed.

To get all of these in a single playthrough, you will need to make sure you save your game at levels 7, 13 and 19 and do all three of them before moving on and before saving over your old save file. Also be sure to save a side-quest or main quest for just before reaching each of the required levels to make it easier.

I would suggest being good at first. Getting bad karma is the easiest, so staying good the entire game will make it easier to handle these. Get your achievement for good, then reload your save. Go on a murder spree until you hit neutral, then turn in your quest to reach your target level. Reload your save yet again. Go on an even bigger murder spree until you hit bad, then turn in your quest to reach the target level. Repeat this process for each set of achievements.

Note: See "Silver-tongued Devil" for a few infinite speech challenge loops. You will gain experience for every speech challenge won, so these will also aid in getting to the level you need without messing up your karma situation.

Note for PC Users: I would suggest just playing the entire game out once being either good or bad as these sets of achievements can be done in about 30 seconds each. Start a new game and while you are looking at your father in his scrubs, go ahead and open the command console and type "player.setlevel 8"and this will grant you the neutral level 8 achievement. Open the console again and type "player.setlevel 14" and finally "player.setlevel 20" for all three neutral achievements. Quit out and start another new game. Open the console and type either "rewardKarma 1000" or "rewardKarma -1000" to get to good or bad karma, depending on which one you still need. Repeat the steps for using the commands to obtain levels 8, 14 and 20 for the last set of achievements.

To get all the achievements related to karma, do not forget to save at levels 7, 13, 19. It is advisable to save close to the transition to the next level. I would recommend playing with good karma, since lowering karma is not difficult, but raising it is harder.
The tactic is this: you will soon increase the required level. Shortly before the promotion, we save, play and get an achievement with good karma (save again, after you get achievements for bad and neutral karma, load this save and continue playing). Next we need to get neutral karma, go to Dukov’s Dwelling. He has a lot of rubbish there, empty bottles, etc. We steal all this, kill the owner and his two girlfriends as they will interfere. And we look in the pip-boy when there is neutral karma. Next we go to Tenpenny Tower, there is one girl “Bling”, you can get experience points on her.
Talk to Bling and ask about her work. She will tell you about her role and offer to tell you a joke. Agree to listen to the joke. You will have the opportunity to interrupt the joke and say your own, through the “[intelligence]” dialogue. She will say that this joke is better than hers. Now you will have the choice to lie to her and say that her joke is funny too. After doing this, the dialogue will not disappear and you can repeat this as much as you like. Thus, giving you experience points, as the level was increased and the achievement was received, we do everything for the achievement with bad karma.
If you have bad karma, you can increase it by collecting scrap metal and giving it for free in Megaton to Walter (the old man who looks after the water supply in the city).

There is not much inaccuracy here. A girl named "Bling" is in Little Lamplight.

After level 15, the Lawbringer perk unlocks, which makes it possible to quickly increase positive karma. The bottom line is this: after taking a perk, bad people (riders, slave owners, Enclave soldiers) will lose their fingers, and you will “exchange” them for positive karma and caps in Regulator HQ.

In a megaton you can easily fill up with negative karma, go to Moriarty’s salon, hack the terminal, when it opens, quickly press several times , close, and so on until victory.
