How to unlock the Pulitzer material achievement in Far Cry 2 - Definitive Guide

First off, go here: http://farcry2game.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=2666 These are the scans of the map from the official guide, which show the locations for all the diamonds and Jackal Tapes. (Credit to the person on the site who posted it, not me) The tapes appear as a cassette tape on the map, and your GPS light will pulse when you're near them like you do with diamonds.

There are a total of 17 Jackal Tapes in the game: 1 that the Journalist gives to you, and 16 for you to find. There are 8 in the North and 8 in the South, with one in each square part of the map except for the center square in the North (where the city is), and the Southeastern square in the South (where the bar is).

You basically only get two chances to turn tapes into the Journalist, once before you leave the North, then once in the South. Both times he'll appear sitting at a table in the Bar with the rest of your buddies.

The Journalist seems to appear almost at random in the North, but usually does near the end of the storyline in the area, or once you've accumulated enough tapes. Just to be sure, when you get a mission to assassinate someone at Goka Falls, don't take the mission yet and finish off collecting the Northern tapes, and hopefully the Journalist will have appeared.

When you go to the South, the Journalist should automatically appear once you've got all 8 tapes in the area. If he appears before you have all of the tapes, don't approach him as he may not appear again and you'll lose out on the achievement.

What most people don't notice is that if you miss some in the North, you can go back and get them. HOWEVER, when you pick them up, they will not play their audio, nor will they be added to your list in the pause menu. Because of this, you'll have to make sure on your own that you've collected all of them in the North before handing over the last batch to the Journalist.

The first time you turn over tapes to the Journalist, probably in the North, you'll unlock Investigative Reporter for 10 points.

When you hand over all 17 tapes, you'll unlock Pulitzer Material for 20 points.

That prick of a journalist has disappeared on me.... what a bastard of an achievement

So to get things straight.. you can only give the tapes twice!? Kinda sucks, because you COULD only know this if you START your game using an achievement guide. If you, like me, just start playing and started collecting the tapes, your basicly screwed out of this achievement. I mean, when the reporter asks me if I have some tapes for him, I gave them, only to find out via WWW that you first need to collect them all BEFORE you hand them over otherwise you cannot get this achievement!?

damn nasty!

Ok, I've found 8 tapes when i was in the North (now i'm in the South) and I went to talk to the journalist just before leave the south for the first achievement (Investigative Reporter 10G Turn over the first set of the Jackal's audio logs to the Journalist) Now i've found the first tape in the south and it's ok, it was added in the menu. After I went to take the second tape near post office, and did not add the tape in the menu (it played the tape recording of the previous one) Now, why this appen? Please anyone help me :(

okay if the tapes don't show up in the menu DON'T WORRY continue collecting all the tapes. Try to remember the ones you pick up though because you can still give all the tapes from the south to the journalist even if it shows that you dont have the tapes. Good Luck!

@motley gunner

I think it's just the order you collect them in, so which ever you collect 1st is number 1, 2nd number 2, etc.

Since they're supposed to tell a kind of story, it's a disappointment you can't listen to half of them :S

I think this stupid achievement is bugged in the way that you best turn in all 8 at once. I'm 100% sure I had all of the South tapes, but I turned em by doing two sets of 4. result: no achievement.
Keep that in mind...

EVEN WITH THE GLITCH THE ACHIEVEMENT STILL UNLOCKS. COLLECT ALL 8 TAPES IN THE SOUTH; DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE TAPES NOT SHOWING UP ON THE MENU AFTER THE 9TH TAPE; AND DON'T FORGET TO GO TO THE BAR AND TURN THEM INTO THE REPORTER. I almost forgot to turn them in, which is important since the achievement doesn't unlock until you meet with him at the bar in the south.

In a perfect world, you turn in the first 8 in one area, then the other 8 in the next area.

^SAME I missed the North Map South section jackal tape

LUCKILY I HAD TONS OF SAVES... including one RIGHT BEFORE the last mission before you start act 2. TURNS OUT I DIDN'T EVEN HAVE TO DO THAT, I WAS SAFE FROM MY CURRENT SAVE.

SO: IN ACT 1 you should have

1. oo Infamy
2. 01 smuggling
3. 02 circulation
4 03 economics
5 04 home
6 05 rat-catcher
7 06 career conseling
8 07 stability
9 08 the humanist
10. 09 Stealing Boots

I was at 50% when i realised i missed it, so i went to Bowa Seko North West and traveled north and I was able to go to to the North area and get the one I missed then went back and turned them into the bar. Good fuckin' luck guys.

So you collect 8 tapes and then turn the first 8 into the journalist. Then, collect the last 8 tapes and turn those into the journalist? OR, do you collect all tapes and turn them into the journalist at 1 time?

I thought I had all 8 for the first cheevo but I forgot #00 isnt a collected tape, the Investigative reporter still unlocked anyway - this caused me some confusion when handing in the last tapes because the Pulitzer Material wasnt popping. I missed the tape in the SW section of the north map, once I handed them in it popped (I was ready to stop playing haha!)

To avoid any problems with the journalist disappearing I saved at the nearby armoury each time before talking to him, If I didnt get the result I wanted I loaded up the last save.

I know it's late, but I can clearly explain how and when the journalist appears. Firstly, he can only appear when you are not on any active mission. The journalist has two triggers in each region to appear at Mike's bar. The first trigger is when you collect 4 or more tapes in your current region. He stays at the bar until you hand over your tapes. If you give him 4-7 tapes you trigger his first unique conversation in the region. After you give him this first set of tapes (which is what the achievement "Investigative Reporter" refers to), he will disappear. The second trigger is when you collect all 8 tapes in the region. Giving him the rest of the tapes triggers his second unique conversation in the region. If you just give him all 8 tapes at once, you miss out on his first unique conversation in that region. You must give him all 8 tapes in the North before you move on to the South.
In short, don't be afraid to give him only a part of the tapes. He will always appear again when you collect all 8 tapes in the region.

Click HERE for the map: (Thanks to Codster2005)

There are a total of 16 Jackal Tapes in the game, 8 in the North and 8 in the South. When you pick one up- it will appear in the Menu and it will play a sound fragment... HOWEVER there is a glitch. When you proceed to the South and pick up a Jackal Tape, he's probably going to talk about a boy with a shotgun... and the Tape won't appear in the Menu. DON'T WORRY! I had that glitch too, just collect the Jackal Tapes EVEN if they don't appear in the Menu, when you have all of them and you give them to the Journalist you should get the Achievement.

Good luck :)

I also got the 10th tape glitch, but thankfully i still got the achievement after i had collected all 8 in the south and approached Reuben in the Marina. If you want to hear all 17 tapes, you can listen to them here:

im playing on the classic version (which seems to be pre-patched) & im suffering from the glitch where as soon as you collect the 'boots' tape, it only ever plays that audio & fails to count any other tapes you collect.

I'd handed in all the tapes in the northern region - then I proceeded to immediately collect all the others after reaching the southern region, and hand them in, but the cheevo just wont pop - ive done this twice so far, and it hasnt popped.

im going to see if i can get my savegame to load on a non classic / original version and then give it another crack

For anybody still playing Far Cry 2 in 2023 and later, I found the following maps by Game Pressure to be excellent for locating the Jackal Tapes. See a link to the Game Pressure site for

Leboa-Sako (Northern map)
https://www.gamepressure.com/farcry2/general-map-leboa-sako-...

and Bowa-Seko (Southern Map)
https://www.gamepressure.com/farcry2/general-map/zf16ec

These maps are great because they show the entire General map, but then also clearly break them down into the individual 9x9 sectors, so you can mark off each tape as you collect them.

Notes on the Journalist:
In my experience, the Journalist spawns when you have collected all 8 Jackal tapes within the region (North or South). When I started working on this achievement I had already progressed to the Southern map so I was not sure whether this achievement would unlock correctly, but following the other guides here, these were the steps I took to unlock the achievement:

1. After finishing the game, I loaded an old save where I was in the Southern map (73% Completion). I had already collected at least 1 tape in the North and at least 1 in the South
2. I returned to the Northern map and collected all the remaining Jackal Tapes there
3. The Journalist spawned AT MIKE'S BAR IN THE NORTHERN MAP, even though the story had progressed to the South. This is important to note. I handed all Northern Jackal tapes to the journalist here, and unlocked the Investigative Reporter achievement
4. After handing in the tapes, I moved to the South map and collected all the remaining Jackal tapes there. I encountered the bug where all Jackal tapes in the South played the audio from Stealing Boots, and were not added to the Menu. But i kept collecting them anyway
5. After collecting all the Jackal tapes in the South, the Journalist appeared in Marina's Bar and I handed them all in to get this achievement.

Hopefully this is helpful to someone.

IMPORTANT!!!To get the trophy, be sure to find all 8 records in the Northern Territory and ONLY after that go to the Southern Territory. You can return back, but if you missed the cases with diamonds, you can always find them, THEN the missed records of the Northern Territory after returning from the South - if they are found, THEY WILL NOT BE COUNTED!!! If this has already happened, but you want platinum, feel free to start the game again.

Be sure to visit the journalist in the southern territory before you start collecting records, otherwise they will not count either!

I never saw the journalist during the game, collected all 16 records and went to him in the Southern Territory - they gave me 2 trophies - for the first and for all the records.

I encountered the same problem described above. After moving to the Southern part, all the Jackal's films were about a boy with a sawed-off shotgun. I traveled all over the map, collected all the notes, arrived at the bar, but they didn’t give me the achievement. The entry is called Boots.

I would like to draw your attention to a glitch, from 10-16 entries (that is, everything happens in the southern territory) it may be that the entries are not marked, there are 10 of them as they were, and they will all be about a boy with a sawed-off shotgun! don’t be afraid, we collect all the records, well, we definitely collect all 8 in the north before moving to the SOUTH, then we go to the bar and give the records to the journalist, it’s also okay if he simply isn’t in the bar for 3-4 days. Then he will appear.
