How to unlock the Another Man's Treasure achievement in FINAL FANTASY IX - Definitive Guide

This achievement is missable!

The way it works: Each Chest, Field Icon item (!), and Reward Item count as one point. Each Chocograph Chest, Crack, or Bubbles count as 2 point. Starting at Rank H, you have to progress through ranks G, F, E, D, C, B, A, finally to S.

Points required: Rank S requires roughly 3/4 of all points available over the course of the game, for me it popped at 373. It shouldn't be very difficult if you're diligent in searching each area but apparently I plowed past a ton of items and came up short on my first playthrough.

You can check your current rank in two places: The woman at the bottom of the Inn in Treno, or the four armed man on the right side in Daguerro.

To get the Rank S Medal for the achievement, speak to the four armed man in Daguerro once you reach Rank S.

In total, there are 135 chest/field/reward locations available on disc 4 along with the 32 Chocobo related items. That makes for only a total of 199 points available at end game, meaning you have to get 141 along with way to that point to avoid missing it. The total game breaks down as such:

181 Chests
143 Field Items
89 Rewards (not every one can be done in a single playthrough though)
25 Chocograph Chests
5 Chocobo Bubble Locations
3 Chocobo Crack Locations

Making a total of 477 available points where ~370 is all that's required.

Huge props to Atomos199 for making this guide that I'm using in my second playthrough to ensure I don't miss it again! It contains a full walkthrough for the game as well as a complete area item list, including indicators for every item still available in disc 4:

For all the Chocobo information, I found this site pretty helpful:

https://jegged.com/Games/Final-Fantasy-IX/Side-Quests/Chocob...

And finally it is possible to get all of the required points as soon as you get to Daguerro for the first time after getting access to the Hilda Garde III airship, but it's attainable anytime after that.

EDIT: I finally wrapped this up using a playthrough of just full boosters and counted every item along the way (I think). From the list I linked up to earlier, I was C Rank when I got to Daguerro for the first time and here's how many items I had at each check:

318 = C Rank
339 = B Rank
353 = A Rank
357 = A Rank
374 = S Rank

I did absolutely zero Chocobo work, zero frog catching, and zero jump roping (I was also going for Excalibur II, so was gonna do that stuff after getting it if necessary) and was able to get it as soon as I returned from Pandemonium having picked up nearly every item available to that point. For posterity, here's my list ("X" = Item I got, "-" = Item I missed, "*"=Item I didn't get but still available on disc 4):

Talking to the lady in the Treno Inn at S Rank also unlocks this achievement

Yeah, I read that too but it definitely wasn't available to me at 357, maybe I counted items that didn't count, maybe you'll have different luck.

I'm currently working on my second playthrough for this cheevo, and after some research, you'll need 340 points in total for rank S (about 75% of the game's treasures), not 374.

To check your rank as as a treasure hunter you have to enter Daguerreo, which is located on an island plateau south of the Forgotten Continent and only accessible once you have the airship or a Gold Chocobo. Once inside the first main area turn right and enter the next room. Activate the lift to get to the top of the room and speak to the Four-Armed Man. He will tell you your Treasure Hunter Rank, which is determined by how many treasure chests, field icons, key items (from sidequests or the Treno Auction House), or Chocograph chests you've discovered. The lowest Treasure Hunter Rank is F and it increases with the more points you accumulate until you reach the highest rank possible, Rank S.

To reach Rank S, you need to accumulate a total of 340 points. A treasure chest and field icon is worth one point and a chest uncovered on Choco (Chocograph chests or ocean bubbles or mountain crack chests) are worth two points each. There are 32 Choco treasures to discover so that is 64 points in total alone and you will earn these on the way to both the Beach Bum and Diggin' It trophies.

You do not need to collect every treasure to reach Rank S and there are enough treasures in the game that you can reach Rank S rather easily. In fact, it's entirely possible to have accumulated enough points to obtain Rank S the first time you can access Daguerreo on Disc 3.

However, if you do miss a fair amount of treasures, many locations in Disc 4 become inaccessible and so you will be left running around looking for the few you missed in fewer locations. Therefore, it's best to collect as many treasures from every location you enter and be as thorough as possible in your search.

Once you’ve reached Rank S, return to the Four-Armed Man in Daguerreo. He will now be sitting on the floor on the bottom of the room he has always been in. He will be shocked that you've reached Rank S and will run away. Find him again at the entrance of Daguerreo and he will identify himself as Gilgamesh and will reward you with the Rank S Reward. You will then obtain this trophy.

The Excalibur II Perfect Game guide on GameFAQs by Atomos199 has a Treasure Locations section that is perfect for locating and keeping track of which items can be discovered in each location of the game.

To become a Rank S treasure hunter, you need to accumulate 340 points in a hidden treasure hunting game. And by hidden I mean you don't actually know it's happening until you find a specific NPC. The Four-Armed Man found at the top of the lift in Daguerreo will tell you your rank and how many points you have. Any regular treasure chest or field icon is worth one point, while Chocobo treasures earned doing "Beach Bum" and "Diggin' It" count for two points each.

You will get 64 points from all the chocobo treasures, so you'll need to find quite a few regular treasure chests and investigation points. Get as many as possible before the end of Disc 3 as multiple locations will be lost to you on Disc 4. A guide with every treasure spot can be found here if you need places to look.

Missable trophy. It’s very easy to screw everything up on the 4th disc, even if it seems like you’ve collected everything.
