How to unlock the Diggin' It achievement in FINAL FANTASY IX - Definitive Guide

Time to get the achievement from start to finish: about 2 hours. You will most likely get beak lvl 99 at the same try.

You have to play chocobo hot n cold minigame for this. You can start it as soon as you get to Lindblum in cd1.

1. You will find chocobo forest northeast of lindblum, where you'll get access to the minigame. Go there

2. Start by talking to the kupo, and once you have the chocobo, go back to chocoforest. You can now play the minigame by speaking to Kupo again.

Minigame:
You have 60seconds to beak the ground. You will find all kinds of things, but what you want to find are chocographs.

Chocographs are treasure maps, where treasures are located in the world map.

There is a total of 24 chocographs. You will find first 6 in the chocobo forest.

Good thing is that the kupo will say when you've found all of them. If you are not sure that did he say it, you can go to world map with chocobo, press Y and see if you have the first 6.

3. Get the first 6, then go to world map and start finding the actual treasures.

Check out IGN made a good walkthrough about it https://www.ign.com/wikis/final-fantasy-ix/Chocobo_Treasure_...

After the 4th chocograph treasure is found in the worldmap, you will get access to ride lightblue oceans in the world map.

4. Now you need the hilda garde III to fly to that one island on the bottom left corner of world map. Then get chocobo to come to you on the trail of chocobo footprints and walk the lightblue waters to the chocolagoon.

Here you will find another 6 chocographs. This part is easier as the lagoon is smaller.

5. Afterwards go find the chocographs in the world map again. You will get the red chocobo from one of the chocographs.

6. Then go back to chocoforest, and get more chocographs. Now this is slightly harder as you have to jump on the platforms as well.

Always wait till the kupo sais that choco cant find more chocographs.

7. Find more chocographs in world map again. Get dark blue choco.

8. Go back to lagoon, find more chocographs.

9. Go to worldmap to uncover the chocographs. Get yellow choco.

10. Then finally go to chocobo airpark.
You will access this with those dead peppers once you find a black spot in the world map. There are 5 of those and sometimes they don't appear, so if you can't find one, go to another spot in the world map.

11. Now in the chocobo airpark find the rest of chocographs.

12. Go to world map once again and discover them. And after a total of 24 chocographs have been uncovered from the world map, you should get this achievement.

You should get also in the same time chocobeak to level 99 naturally. I got it till lvl 98 when I had all the chocographs, so took only 1 minute extra to get the final level.

This may seem tedious at first, but you quickly notice that you get the hang of it. Just have fast forward booster on.

Happy hunting!

Note: you need the chocograph before you can dig the treasure.

I'm trying to figure out which minigame I hate more: This one or the card one.

Chocobo Hot and Cold is the largest sidequest in Final Fantasy IX and the ultimate aim is to dig up 24 items, known as 'Chocographs', then locate the hidden treasures they offer a clue towards.

You will start out in Chocobo's Forest, which can first be accessed after you leave Lindblum in Disc 1, before progressing to Chocobo's Lagoon and then Chocobo's Air Garden. Along the way, through finding the hidden treasures, you will unlock different types of chocobos which can navigate different types of terrain, which will be needed to access new locations and find further hidden treasures. You start out with the field chocobo (yellow), before progressing to reef chocobo (light blue), mountain chocobo (red), sea chocobo (dark blue) and sky chocobo (gold).

Whilst the three main digging locations may vary in size and shape, the premise remains the same. At a cost of 60 Gil per game, Choco can dig in the ground to find as many items as possible within 60 seconds. As Choco digs up items, the party earns Points which can be redeemed for items and Choco's beak will grow stronger and allow him to dig faster.

As the minigame's name might suggest, when you dig using the button, an indicator will inform you how close you are to uncovering a treasure. When you dig, the chocobo will respond with either:

  • "Kweh." which means you are cold.
  • "Kweh?!" which means you are warm.
  • "Kwehhh?!" which means you are hot (close to the item).
  • "K-KWEHHH!!!" means you have have found the item.

There's no way of knowing what items are available in a given game until you dig them up so digging up Chocographs is basically a luck-based grind. However, with the High Speed booster, this version is much quicker than before, while while it significantly boosts Choco's movement and digging speed, the in-game timer remains at normal speed. This means you can basically just mash the entire time until you dig up all the items in a game and you will only rarely hit the time limit.

Whenever you dig up a Chocograph, there are three clues to finding the treasure on the world map: the picture on the Chocograph, the Chocograph's name and a hint given by the Help Moogle by pressing in the Chocograph menu (accessed by pressing while on a chocobo). Note that there are 23 complete Chocographs, plus one more comprised of six Chocograph Pieces that you will have to dig up individually.

The three locations you can play Chocobo Hot and Cold and the Chocographs you can find in each, are:

Chocobo's Forest

This area can be accessed after you leave Lindblum in Disc 1, on the Southern side of the Mist Continent:

  • Streamside
  • Between Mountains
  • Uncultivated Land
  • Healing Shore
  • Abandoned Beach
  • Cold Field
  • Faraway Lagoon
  • Bird's-Eye Lagoon
  • Small Beach
  • Forbidden Forest (after you receive a mountain (red) chocobo)
  • Green Plains (after you receive a mountain (red) chocobo)
  • Forgotten Plains (after you receive a mountain (red) chocobo)
  • Cold Lagoon (after you receive a mountain (red) chocobo)

Chocobo's Lagoon

This area can be accessed after you obtain the Blue Narciss on Disc 3 and also requires a reef (light blue) chocobo, obtained from the Healing Shores Chocograph. It is located on Palmnell Island, south of the Forgotten Continent. Land on the beach north of here and navigate around the archipelago via the reef until you reach the location:

  • Forgotten Lagoon
  • Abandoned Lagoon
  • Dawn Lagoon
  • Dusk Plains
  • Sea At Dusk (after you receive a sea (dark blue) chocobo)
  • Ocean (after you receive a sea (dark blue) chocobo)
  • Outer Island 2 (after you receive a sea (dark blue) chocobo)

Chocograph Pieces

There are six of these in the game and are required to piece together the Chocograph called Mist Ocean. The pieces are found in the following:

  1. Chocobo's Forest (from the start)
  2. Chocobo's Forest (after you receive a mountain (red) chocobo)
  3. Chocobo's Forest OR Chocobo’s Lagoon, once you receive the Blue Narciss (it will be in one or the other)
  4. Chocobo’s Lagoon (as soon as you can access it once you have the Blue Narciss)
  5. Chocobo’s Lagoon (once you have the Hilda Garde III)
  6. Chocobo’s Lagoon (once you have the Hilda Garde III)

Finding the hidden treasure this Chocograph grants you access to a sky (gold) chocobo and Chocobo's Air Garden.

Chocobo’s Air Garden

This area can be accessed after you obtain a sky (gold) chocobo. Unlike the previous two, this location isn't fixed and can appear in any of five places. Firstly, you must be flying on Choco by taking off in a forest, then locate a dark circle on the world map. Once above it, use a Dead Pepper and you will land in Chocobo's Air Garden. The five various locations are:

  • Outer Island
  • Fairy Island
  • Forgotten Island

There is already a ton of guides across the Internet detailing the exact location of each hidden treasure so for convenience's sake, you can use the guide located here: LINK for a text walkthrough with screenshots or follow this video guide with commentary (credit to Missildine Online! for this):

The commentary is a little annoying but tells you the order you can find the treasures in (as you can't get them in the order shown in the Chocograph menu) and also has timestamps in the description to find the ones you're missing.

This achievement is tied to a side-quest called Chocobo Hot and Cold. The goal is to dig up 24 "Chocograph" items and use them to find 24 hidden treasures. For 60Gil you can dig around to try and find treasures inside the chocobo areas, which will sometimes include a Chocograph (it's completely random). When digging, your chocobo will say a few things to alert how close you are to a treasure. These are: "Kweh" = cold. "Kweh?!" = warm. "Kwehhh?!" = hot. "K-KWEHHH!!!" = item found. Again, this doesn't guarantee a Chocograph each time. The best way to do this mini-game is turning on the High Speed Mode booster and just run around mashing the button.

You will first begin this quest in Chocobo's Forest outside Lindblum on Disc 1. You can find 13 Chocographs here, 4 of which require a mountain chocobo so you'll need to return later on. Next you'll be able to access Chocobo's Lagoon with the reef chocobo upgrade where you'll find 7 more Chocographs, 3 of which require a sea chocobo. You need to have at least completed the Healing Shore Chocograph from the forest area to unlock the reef chocobo to enter the Lagoon.

In addition to the full Chocographs you can find inside the above two locations, you will have to find six pieces of another called Mist Ocean. You will find 2 pieces inside the Forest, 3 inside the Lagoon, and the final piece can be in either location. Once you have all six pieces, solve Mist Ocean to get the sky chocobo.

Using the sky chocobo, you can now enter the final location called Chocobo's Air Garden. This spot changes locations, and can be in any of the five spots found here. Once you get inside, you'll be able to find the final 3 Chocographs with the digging mini-game.

As you find Chocographs, use this thread to solve each of them and dig up the corresponding treasures. Once the 24th treasure is dug up, the achievement will unlock.

As you progress through the story, you will find yourself in the Chocobo Forest. It is there that you will be able to look for treasures with this bird for the first time. And you can find chocographs. These are small pictures with fragments of a world map. Using them you need to determine where to look for the treasure. There are 24 such parts - chocographs. You need to find them all to get the trophy. But in the forest they are not all chocobos. By leveling up, your bird will be able to access the Chogobo Lagoon and the Air Garden. Continue your search there.

if you try to cheat and look for treasures without a chocograph, resorting to tips from third-party sites, then I hasten to disappoint you, there will simply be no treasures in this place
