How to unlock the End of the Road achievement in FINAL FANTASY IX - Definitive Guide

This is intended for those who do not wish to use the battle assist or 9999 boosters

Here was my setup:
Solo Freya (started farming levels at Lv.38) Equipped with Dragon's Hair (Obtained on Forgotten Continent with a Dead Pepper) and a Coral ring, other gear was best gear i had at the time.

Abilities - Auto-haste, MP Attack, Antibody, Lv Up, Accuracy+ Dragon Killer and Distract

Kill off the other 3 party members and head to Gizamaluke's Grotto, where the moogles are, you'll notice a vine you can climb up which leads to the world map, run around outside the woods to encounter Grand Dragons

Each fight ends after 2-3 hits for 35k exp + more from Lv Up, bear in mind double poison claw will likely kill you below Lv50, turn on the speed booster and farm these big boys, you'll be done in about an hour or less, save every so often and add whatever abilities you want as levels go by.
Lv99 Requires 6.8 Million exp

Forget Mustard Bomb. If you want to do this with Quina, s/he should learn Lv.5 Death for an insta-gib on the Grand Dragons.

To further elaborate on the solution, with a character who can deal at least >7k per hit on Grand Dragons solo with the speed boost on, this takes about 1hr 15mins from Lv.50-99 (when I happened to start the achievement) with each battle taking 20-25secs from start to finish.

Once you hit Lv.60+, it starts taking multiples to level up. Approximately two per level until mid 70s, three per level until mid 80s, four per level until early 90s, then five per level @ 52k exp using Level Up ability.

You can also get quina to eat a bomb monster outside lindblum in the forest area and learn mustard bomb which will kill grand dragons in one hit 30% of the time, this can be done as early as gizamalukes grotto after climbing the vine inside the grotto back to the world map.

Or just use the airship to get to where you have to go. And have auto regen to heal overtime. Don't really need to use healing items.

If you use the battle assistance, it will keep you at max hp and mp as well as put you in trance so you won’t have to worry about healing as long as the dragon doesn’t one shot you. Activate after knocking out the rest of your team as well as the speed up and 9999 attack.

You might as well go for the 10,000 kills achievement before starting this

This solution is for if you're just looking to get a single character up to level 99, and don't care who.

Head to Vile Island, off the coast from where the Iifa Tree is (it's got a huge mountain). I've only accessed it using the gold chocobo, so I'm unsure if you can access it by airship.

The general idea is that you'll want to give Eiko the Guardian Mog ability and let everyone else become infected by the virus effect, which prevents them from earning EXP and AP, giving their share to Eiko (a little under 200,000 EXP with the Level Up ability, when you face three Yan).

Here's what you'll need:
Give everyone the Auto-Life and Auto-Regen abilities. (I used Eiko, Zidane, Dagger and Amarant)

If you still have AP, give Zidane Accuracy+, Distract, and Alert. Give Amarant Return Magic and Accuracy+
Give Eiko the Level Up and Guardian Mog ability (she can still become infected with virus during battles, but don't worry, it'll clear itself at the end, letting her gain the EXP bomb)
If you have any AP left over, give anyone you can Auto-Haste, just to speed things up.

BEFORE YOU START, HIT PAUSE AND TURN ON THE 9999 CHEAT! (this will allow you to take down each Yan in two hits)

Now you'll basically walk around the island and battle Yan (each one carries over 48,000 base exp). They'll come in groups of 1-3. This set up works just as easily with any of them.

The only thing to know is that, as much as you can control it, you want Eiko to be the second person to hit a Yan, not the first. This is because of the uncommon (but still annoying) Snort counterattack that will boot the character from battle.

Comet is a crap shoot on damage, but between Distract and Auto-Life, I only had one battle get away from me, but you should still save every 5 battles or so. Just begin doing battles, and pretty much straight up attacking. KOed characters was uncommon, but If Eiko gets KOed, revive her only when there's a single Yan remaining. Everyone else can wait until after the battle (they aren't getting EXP, anyways). The Yan should give enough phoenix down that you'll be covered.

Using this method, I got Eiko from level 50 to 99 in under two hours.

This method really worked for me. In addition, I also activated speed (because I'm impatient) and battle assistance. Battle assistance was highly effective. Comet did not usually kill me and I no longer had to wait for turns, so I didn't even attack with Eiko/risk snort.

Jobbers solution is accurate but to simplify it:

You can do this easy as soon as you get to Gizamaluke's Grotto.
I was lvl 19 when I started. Go to the end of the grotto where the mogs are and climb a vine to the world map.

Simply use the battle assist cn_LB and 9999 cn_LT
THIS DOES NOT VOID THE ACHIEVEMENT.

Start off farming in the wooded areas if the Grand Dragons are to tough. Bring a good supply of tents and phoenix downs just in case.
You will get 35308 xp if you have a party of 1 or 8802 xp and 2604 gil if you have a full party and want to evenly lvl up.

This trophy seems daunting but is actually a very short grind and will probably come naturally if you're farming kills for Bloodlust post-game.

The quickest way to hit level 99 is by farming Grand Dragons on Popos Heights outside Gizamaluke's Grotto (the exit accessed by climbing the vine where the Moogle family live who are obsessed with Kupo Nuts). These are fearsome enemies when you can first fight them and will probably lead to instant annihilation but are pretty fair game once you hit level 40 or so.

Still, you will need to do some preparation. Firstly, make sure the character you want to level knows the Level Up ability. This can be learned through the equipment Iron Helm, Egoist's Armlet, Fairy Earrings, Pearl Rouge and Rosetta Ring (this will vary character by character depending on what they can and can't equip). Secondly, Auto-Life will help massively as will Auto-Regen. Equipping a Coral Ring (most easily obtained by having Freya win the Festival of the Hunt) is also highly recommended to negate the Grand Dragon’s Thundaga attack. It's also worth equipping the Antibody ability if you have it, to negate the effect of Venom Breath, whilst having Distract (Zidane, Freya and Steiner only) will halve the accuracy of the Grand Dragon’s Poison Claw.

Now, turn on the High Speed and 9,999 boosters and enter into battle. Kill the three characters you don't want to level and leave just one alive. This is because the total EXP of enemies killed is shared between remaining party members at the end of a battle; they don't all get the full amount. Thus you will get four times as much EXP if you kill a Grand Dragon with one character as you would with the whole party being alive or in more simple terms, this trophy will only take a quarter of the time to earn.

With 9,999 turned on, Grand Dragons will die in two hits. If you have a Coral Ring, its Thundaga attack will actually heal you whilst its other attacks are countered with the abilities mentioned above. If you want extra help, turn on the Battle Assistance booster so that your character is instantly healed every time the Grand Dragon attacks, although this slows down the battles somewhat with entering Trance mode.

When killed by a single character, Grand Dragons offer 35,208 EXP. With Level Up, this is multiplied by 1.5 to give 52,812 EXP per battle. It requires a total of 6,633,167 EXP to hit level 99 and you can kill three Grand Dragons per minute. Essentially, it shouldn't take you more than 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours to earn this trophy. Remember to save frequently just in case something goes wrong!

Note that the Yan enemies, found on Vile Island, offer the most EXP in the game but are an absolute nightmare to kill. Whilst you would get more EXP farming these, you will either die a lot and or the fight will take longer as you have to employ some strategy in every battle, even with the 9,999 damage booster, rather than just mash Attack.

I would suggest first grinding out all the kills toward "Bloodlust" and that will likely get all your characters to Level 99. If not, head to Popos Heights (take the vine up from where the moogle is in Gizamaluke’s Grotto) and kill Grand Dragon enemies. With Battle Assistance and 9,999 damage boosters, you can kill a few per minute. If you kill off three characters, the remaining one will earn 4x the XP since it is always split between living characters at the end of battle. They don't auto-revive after the battle is won, so you can just keep getting experience with one character quickly in each fight.

This trophy seems like it will be a long grind but it is actually a very short grind and will most likely come naturally if you're farming kills for Bloodlust and you will obtain it long before the Bloodlust trophy.

Most people look for the strongest enemies that most likely give the most XP in order to farm a trophy like this. You can choose to farm Yans on Vile island which give the most XP per enemy/fight or enemies in Memoria which give good XP. However this is not the best strategy in this game. You will get more XP farming these but you will either die a lot or the fight will take longer as you have to employ some strategy in every battle, even with the 9,999 damage booster, rather than just Attack.

The best and quickest way to hit level 99 is by farming Grand Dragons on Popos Heights outside Gizamaluke's Grotto (the exit accessed by climbing the vine where the Moogle family live who are obsessed with Kupo Nuts). These are tough enemies when you can first fight them and they will probably annihilate you at that point but are pretty easy targets once you hit level 40 or so.

To maximize your XP per hour and minimize your time spent farming you need to do some minor preparation. First make sure the character you want to level knows the Level Up support ability and has it equipped. This can be learned from a variety of equipment including the Iron Helm, Egoist's Armlet, Fairy Earrings, Pearl Rouge and Rosetta Ring. I would also equip the Auto-Life and Auto-Regen support abilities. Equipping a Coral Ring is also recommended as it will absorb the Grand Dragon’s Thundaga attack. It's also worth equipping the Antibody ability to negate the effect of Venom Breath. If the character you are leveling is either Zidane, Freya or Steiner then the Distract support ability will halve the accuracy of the Grand Dragon’s Poison Claw.

Turn on the High Speed and 9,999 boosters from the pause menu and enter into battle. Kill the three characters you don't want to level and leave just one alive. You do this because the total XP of enemies killed is shared between remaining party members at the end of a battle; they don't all get the full amount. Therefore you will get 4 times as much XP if you kill a Grand Dragon with one character as you would with the whole party being alive. This simply means that doing this will significantly reduce the time it takes to earn the trophy.

With the 9,999 booster turned on Grand Dragons will die in two hits. If you have a Coral Ring, its Thundaga attack will actually heal you while its other attacks are countered with the abilities mentioned above. You can also turn on the Battle Assistance booster so that your character is instantly healed every time the Grand Dragon attacks but this is not recommended as it slows down the battles significantly with the animations when entering Trance mode. Auto Regen should be more than enough to easily heal your character especially since the dragon will die in two rounds.

When killed by a single character Grand Dragons offer 35,208 EXP. With the Level Up support ability this is multiplied by 1.5 to give 52,812 EXP per battle. It requires a total of 6,633,167 EXP to hit level 99 and you can kill three Grand Dragons per minute. Therefore it shouldn't take you more than 1.5 to 2 hours to earn this trophy. Remember to save frequently just in case something goes wrong!

To attain level 99, you need to collect a total of 6,633,167 experience points. This is quite a time consuming achievement, so don't worry about it till you have completed the game and obtained good gear. It is also advisable to have mastered all abilities.

Before beginning, select for your party Zidane, Freya, Steiner, and Amarant. These are your melee hitters, and will be the most useful. Also be sure to bring 4 Rosetta Rings if you can, or as many as you can obtain, one for each character. Also be sure you have equipped the best weapons for each character. Equip the following abilities; Antibody, Body Temp. This is the priority first.

Take your party in to Memoria. Go to the screen where the planets are colliding and you are walking across a warped castle. You will encounter the Chimera here. Attack the chimera once with any character beside Zidane. The Chimera will use Venom, Freeze, then Virus Crunch. Once Virus Crunch has been used, attack with a different character, again not Zidane. Repeat again till Freya, Steiner, and Amarant have the Virus. Kill the Chimera, and move on to the next screen.

This will be the screen with a waterfall and save-sphere. Now switch abilities to Auto-Life, Auto-Regen, Auto-Haste, Add Status. prioritise the list from first to last if you can't afford all. Run up and down this area, with the speed booster if you want. There are only two monsters here; Stilva and Behemoth. With the Rosetta Rings, Stilva is a breeze and a free healing opportunity. Behemoth is slightly more tricky, but with auto-life and auto-regen, should still be manageable so long as you pay attention. Because these are the only two monsters on this screen, this screen nets you on average the highest amount of exp per battle. Normally this exp would be divided among the four party members, but because 3 of the 4 have the Virus status, they can't receive exp. Therefore, all exp gets funnelled to one character, levelling them up at 4x the regular rate.

Rinse and repeat this until you pop the achievement.

Travel the global world map and kill monsters. They will give you EXP points. It is necessary that at least one character reach level 99.
