How to unlock the Chocochampion achievement in FINAL FANTASY VII - Definitive Guide

More advice than a guide, I believe this is actually unmissable as is part of the story line.

To win the race I would recommend racing manually and going at a steady speed. Look on the map and see where it starts and try to gauge the stamina to where you are on the course.

I lost my first race as didn't use the map and finished with nearly all my stamina. Then second race finished about 10 seconds before the AI and still with well over half my stamina. Popped as loaded back into the jockey lounge.

This didn't pop for me during the storyline race so I assume you have to do it in the Gold Saucer.

Hi buddy, for me I did it in the story mission, that's why I thought it was unmissable. I failed the first race and won the second and it popped.

It's glitched, like the PC and PS4 version. It could glitch for the storyline and you must win a race by yourself later to unlock it

A really easy way to do this is by Holding down RB and RT, this will make your Stamina Regenerate very quickly and you can hold down the B Button to sprint for pretty much the entire Race

if this achievement didn't unlock for you during the Storyline Chocobo Race.. don't worry just catch a wild chocobo feed it with some greens and do 1 small track race and the achievement will pop.. btw you can also use the Gold Chocobo just make sure to feed him some greens before you start racing!

@ErnaP thanks for the refill stamina glitch, made this ridiculously easy.

Okay after some trial and error when you are doing the race to get out of the prison leave it on automatic DO NOT SWITCH TO MANUAL. The third chocobo Esther gave me won all on its own being on automatic and the achievement popped. You are welcome in advance and happy gaming!

I got this on the prison race, but I had to reload my save twice. I used the stamina glitch and did not use 3x speed up when it unlocked. After you win, don't hit any buttons. For whatever reason, this achievement is really glitchy and has a hard time recognizing you've won.

pretty sure there's some sort of minimum requirement for doing the "easy winning" strategy of holding RB+RT as my class c Chocobo even when sprinting the whole time gets last place and I've given my Chocobo hundreds of greens

At the prison race I failed twice then won but the achievement didn't pop. I then reloaded a save just before and it popped during Barrets story in the house. Weird that

My Class C Chocobo won't get more than 4th place, even after feeding it 52 sylkis greens and using the stamina glitch. I couldn't get it to unlock during the initial first race and it's a pain to get it afterwords.

I won this from the prison race on my first try.

Switch to manual, and hold down [X] + [RB] + [RT] the whole time.

@Paralyze33 this worked for me. I raced twice and won and it didn't unlock but I was using 3x speed and may have pressed buttons after winning. It unlocked by not using any boosters, switched to manual and held X, RB and RT and let go just before the finish line, waiting for the screen to fade back to the waiting room - achievement unlocked.

After reading all these comments and having my own experience I have to say the unlock requirement for this achievement varies person to person. Persistence WILL unlock it, there’s no reason to wait until later to get this done - use the story!

For me personally I won the very first race (holding the wrong button no less - B instead of X alongside RB/RT) on manual and I did not get the achievement. My save was right before the Dyne fight so I reloaded, beat him real quick (level 23 barret with W machine gun and level 3 limit Angermax beats him in one hit - abuse the battle booster) and made my way back to the race all on 3X speed. I left it on automatic this time and held the right buttons - first race was terrible, finished second to last but the second race the Chocobo blitzed everyone. Achievement unlocked in the lobby.

I HIGHLY recommend just taking advantage of the story race instead of trying to come back here and do this later. It’s a lot of extra work for what is essentially handed to you and only takes about five minutes or less to get back to each time. It CAN unlock on the story just reload your saves until it does. Assuming you keep multiple saves which is a no brainer for me but if you don’t…just make another save now. Or don’t save after winning with no pop. It’s not missable in any way but to push yourself out of a relatively easy unlock until later in the game seems silly.

Not really pleased with the lack of information here so I'm going to post my own guide. The achievement is not guaranteed in the prison race for whatever reason. I have completed this game three times now, and 2 out of 3 times I won the race first try and did not get the achievement. As others have mentioned, you can try reloading your save and trying again, but to be honest I forgot to try that so here we are.

So if you are like me and missed it the first time, you can get this achievement much later in the game. What you will need to do is wait until you obtain the Highwind, so that you can fly over the the Chocobo Sage's house in the Northern continent. Look for a house completely surrounded with mountains and land there. The Chocobo Sage sells Sylkus Greens for 5,000 gil each. I recommend buying 30-50 of them. As 150,000+ gil for all these greens is a bit pricey, try waiting until the very end of the game to do this if you are hurting for gil.

Now you need to head to the Chocobo Farm on the first continent (east side). Talk to gramps in the house and buy a stable for 10,000 gil. You only need one for this achievement, but you'll eventually need more if you want to get into breeding Chocobos for the Gold one.

As mentioned, you can skip this next section If you plan on obtaining a Gold Chocobo for the Knights of the Round achievement. But if not, head outside the farm to the tracks and equip your Chocobo Lure Materia. To catch a Chocobo, you need to kill all the enemies surrounding it without hurting the Chocobo itself. There's no need to feed it greens to occupy it as these low-level enemies will be dying in one hit in the end-game. After obtaining one, dismount and send it back to Chocobo Farm. You can catch up to four at a time to increase the odds of getting a "Good" or better one.

Once you've got a few, head back into the Farm, into the stables, and talk to Chocobo Billy. Ask him about moving Chocobos to the stable. Each Chocobo you caught will have a rating, and you want one that is Wonderful, Great, or Good. These specific words will be in Billy's quote. If you got one of those, put it in your pen. Now talk to Billy and ask him to feed the Chocobo. You can now feed it the expensive greens you bought. I personally did 10 at a time but I think you can just stuff his/her poor face with all 30 at a time, lol. I fed it 30 before it no longer gained stats, but it could be dependent on the Chocobo. Speed is the most important stat, followed by Stamina.

Anyways, that should be all you need! Your Chocobo should now be a beast on the track. Head over to the Gold Saucer and register it to race with the girl on the left of the Chocobo Racing section. To actually win the race, you first need to hit cn_back to switch it from automatic to manual, then hold cn_X, cn_RB, and cn_RT. If you start to run out of stamina, hold down cn_A for a bit but it shouldn't be necessary. The short track also works and is quicker. Achievement should unlock after just one race win here.

Before downvoting, please explain what I can add to this guide to make it better, or anything I may have forgot. I will be happy to make chances to help future players obtain this slightly annoying achievement. Thanks!

When you do the chocobo race to get out of the desert prison, that win counts for this trophy.

I actually won my prison race and the trophy did not pop, so it may be glitched. It only popped many hours later when I won my first race with a chocobo I'd caught in the wild.

I didn't get the trophy for the story race. I won on the 2nd attempt where she gives you a much faster bird, so maybe only the 1st try counts? I also had 3x speed turned on, might be a bug related to that? Or it's just random, idk.

Only way I could get this in the story to pop was to take off the x3 speed. Seems to be glitched when it's that fast.

The Chocobo Racing mini-game takes place at the Gold Saucer. You will be forced to do this as part of the story, and can obtain the achievement at this time. If you fail to win this race, the Gold Saucer will be available to you again later in the game and you can try as many times as you'd like. I failed my first race trying in Manual mode, then tried Auto the second time and won, so that's an option if you're struggling.

MISSABLE AND POTENTIALLY GLITCHED

In order to obtain this trophy, you must win the Chocobo Racing mini-game at the Gold Saucer. The racing mini-game is available after the Gold Saucer reopens after rescuing Cloud in Mideel. You will have to win the Chocobo race many times while trying to breed a Gold Chocobo. Refer to the Gold Chocobo Breeding Supplement Guide for information on how to win the Chocobo Racing mini-game.

Note: The first chance to win a Chocobo race is when your party escaped Corel Prison, however the trophy may glitch and you may not obtain it. If this occurs, win the Chocobo race again later in the game by entering your own Chocobo. This glitch might have been fixed with the 1.03 patch.

Can be obtained by going through the story, but the "x3" mod must be disabled during the race. Otherwise the trophy will not drop.

there was such a glitch during the races - hold down L1+R1+L2+R2 and the chocobo's endurance scale would slowly fill up

This trophy can be obtained during the story in the chocobo races in the Golden Saucer prison. The acceleration mode was turned on and the trophy was still given. The combination of L1+L2+R1+R2 (they need to be held and held) gradually increases the chocobo's endurance scale only if you do not use acceleration on (in this case, the scale still decreases). By simply increasing the Chocobo's speed by and using a combination of 4 triggers, endurance does not decrease or increase, but simply remains constantly at the same level. (If you use without a combination of triggers, endurance will gradually decrease)
