These are the large gold medals pictured in the trophy's logo. Playing on Easy, it is very simple to pick up the 15 required. Once the 15th gold medal is collected, the trophy will unlock.

In order to get Ground medals (which are Gold objects larger than stars), you have to destroy ground enemies (mainly the tiny tanks moving from one side of the screen to the other) and destructible objects (like crates). The Ground medals can be found in specific locations that are always the same on each difficulty, and it also looks like that they are 14 in total and not 15 as the trophy description states (unless I’m not noticing two overlapping Ground medals somewhere along the way).
