Doing the story alone will get 1 character to level 18
If you have 4 controllers you can get xp on all 4!. To get xp on any level you must join in all 4 controllers at the end of the level before picking up the box!. All points earned will stay with all the characters.
By far the quickest level in my opinion is St lou's cemetery - Early mourning. Doing this level will net you over 400k in just over 20 mins across all 4 characters.
