How to unlock the Retribution achievement in God of War III - Definitive Guide

To get this trophy, you simply have to kill Zeus. Sounds easy, right? Not quite. See below for a complete strategy for this fight.

Zeus' First Stage:

In this section of the fight, Use the Nemesis Whip. It has a magic attack that shoots a ball of charged lightning at Zeus. Dodge his charge attacks by jumping and using the mid air dash. Whenever you're not near Zeus, use the Bow of Apollo to continue to inflict damage on Zeus. He has a punch combo attack that you can easily evade. He will punch twice and then unleash an energy wave. Block the two punches, then jump and dash over his head and avoid the energy wave. Keep this pattern up and eventually the ceiling will come crashing down on Zeus, making way for the next stage of the fight.

Zeus' Second Stage:

In this stage of the fight, you and Zeus will be in an open arena. This is far better for attacking since you have so much more room to move around. Employ the same basic strategy as the previous stage: Use the Bow of Apollo and Nemesis Whip to attack, and always make sure that you have enough time to counter. By that, I mean don't spend too much time simply attacking. Keep your distance at times since he will most likely damage you if you spend too much time consecutively atacking. After you have sufficently damaged Zeus, Gaia will show up and there will be a cutscene. Follow the only path you can take to find the heart of Gaia. Now you can equip the Nemean Cestus and destroy the onyx stone that is in the way of Gaia's heart. Behind the onyx stone, there is a flammable bramble wall. Send a charged arrow from the Bow at it, burning it away, revealing Gaia's heart. Now you can start to attack the heart until Zeus appears and begins the final stage of the fight.

Zeus' Third Stage

This is the final stage of the fight with Zeus. He is rather annoying here and has some very damaging attacks. First off, make sure that if you're not attacking, you're blocking. I highly recommend using the Nemesis Whip in this section. When Zeus begins to move away from Gaia's heart, he is getting ready to run over to it to heal himself. This is when you should be attacking furiously. If you can damage him enough that it prevents him from running to heal himself, you can go over and attack the heart and gain back some health. You can also be hitting Zeus while you're there. If you don't stop him, he will start to make copies of himself which will distract you from focusing on him. The copies die easily and give you orbs, but they are still a pain to take care of. Keep using this strategy to wear down Zeus and eventually you will get the desired over his head. Perform the QTE to kill Zeus and receive this trophy.

In the heart of Gaia, it is better to use the following tactics. We select the weapon that Hephaestus forged for us and spam (L1+O). In this case, Zeus practically does not have time to rise. As soon as the opportunity arises to replenish life from the heart of Gaia, we replenish it, even if it is not necessary, the main thing is that Zeus does not get it. Then we spam grab again (L1+O). If clones appear (with this tactic it is extremely rare) we use lightning (magic). In this way, I left the battle (Titanium difficulty mode) with full lives and mana, and did not use the wrath of Sparta at all.

In the first battle with Zeus, I jumped over him during his attacks and stabbed him in the back.

The main thing is not to forget about the block.

We block 2 blows. After 2 blows with Zeus's fists in close combat, between the 2nd and 3rd blow there is time for an attack. We attack with gloves L1 + Square, he is thrown back. Can be used in both the 1st and 2nd battle with him.

In general, Zeus is quite simple (it was more difficult in God of War 2 on Titan), but at high difficulty levels it does not forgive mistakes. There will be 3 battles with this boss (before you pierce him with the sword of Olympus, everything after that can be considered a cutscene).

First battle in 2D perspective: This battle consists of 2 phases. In the first phase, Zeus has a traditional triple attack with his hands (the first two hits are blocked, the third is not blocked, so I advise you to use the Fleece in time and not let it get to the third hit - in Chaos it will easily remove 60% of the heals), he also has a lightning attack in his arsenal - he jumps into the air and throws 2-3 projectiles - ATTENTION - I advise you to take advantage of this moment, jump after Zeus and catch him in a circle - Kratos will hit Zeus in the face 2 times, causing him huge damage (damage even more than level 5 Cestuses). An alternative is to simply deflect the lightning, but it is much less effective. After ~40% of Zeus's lives are gone, the circle above his head lights up - we conduct a QTE with 3 random buttons and enter the second phase. The same Zeus, but he added two more attacks to his arsenal - he releases pillars of electricity from the ground towards Kratos (blocked) and a dive bomb (the attack is very rare, but it does happen: it flies into the air and plops down with force on the ground - we just jump ). Keep an eye on Zeus, stand under the block and attack only when he has carried out his attack, because... he blocks the blows himself. You can also use Launch with any weapon, but only when Zeus is not under the block - we throw him into the air, jump after him and grab him in a circle - he will not last long. Do not use magic - it may well be useful in the final, only simple blows (square) Cestus.

Second outdoor battle. Zeus added 2 more attacks to his arsenal - a charge towards Kratos and a double punch. He also still throws lightning bolts, but while standing on the ground. You can hit Zeus, but why? This battle has a timer; after a certain time has passed (I think a little more than a minute), a cut-scene with Gaia will automatically start. Therefore, do not risk your health (especially in Chaos - you are unlikely to be able to restore it in full) and just run from Zeus and reflect the lightning.

The third battle with the heart of Gaia. Some may think that the battle is extremely difficult, especially when clones appear, but there is a tactic in which Zeus can summon a maximum of 1 copy. At the very beginning, use your heart and restore lost health. Zeus will appear. He has all the techniques that he used before, but you have already learned how to use them. Reflect lightning, hand attacks - reflect the first or second blow, charge - either stand under the block or reflect. Now let's move on to the actual tactics of quick killing - you will need the blades of the Exile (at least in Chaos I only used them) and a Heavy attack (triangle). Zeus needs to be pinned against the wall, or in a corner and punched with a triangle - if he doesn’t have time to block, he will fly into the air - take your chance, jump after him and grab him in a circle (as I wrote earlier - this is the most powerful technique that can use Kratos against your dad). If it works, repeat. If not - Zeus uses a dive bomb - just stand nearby and jump at the last moment. Then again a strike to the triangle and an attempt to grab in the air. If done quickly, he will not be able to do anything and will spam dive bomb. But you won’t be able to kill him, even if you grab him in the air 1000 times - Zeus has phases, so after 5-6 successful blows to the face you need to let him get close to the heart and replenish lost strength. Next, he will summon 1 clone - first deal with the clone, then repeat the tactic of capturing in the air. Sometimes the tactic fails and Zeus, instead of a dive bomb, begins to summon a crowd of clones, which in turn splat on the ground, then Zeus himself plops down - this is a failure, but the clones can be quickly killed if you use Level 5 Cestus - the shock wave erases the clones into powder, after which continue to hit Zeus in the face. Very soon it will fall and the coolest and longest QTE in the series will begin: button mashing, L1/R1, 3 random buttons, L1/R1, semicircle with the left stick, L1/R1, 3 random buttons, L1/R1, holding L2+R2 and the final pressing of the sword into the mortal body of Zeus. The battle is won! But the trophy will be given only after you beat Zeus in the face, when the screen is filled with his blood.
