How to unlock the Up to the Challenge achievement in God of War III - Definitive Guide

Challenges are accessible via Treasures on the main menu after completing the game. There are seven of them, and in my opinion they vary widely in difficulty. Knowing what to do, and with some skill and a bit of luck, however, you shouldn't have too much trouble.

I found "Bare Hands" and "Get Stoned" to be the hardest / most luck-based, so I'd recommend leaving these two until last and getting the easier ones out of the way first. If you've played the previous God of War games (I hadn't), then you'll know what to expect, and I've heard that God of War III's challenges are easier than the previous two games' challenges.

If you need more help, I've included a YouTube video for each challenge below (credit goes to PowerPyx for those) as well as a few links to other walkthroughs regarding these challenges. Good luck!

1) Population Control
Thankfully we begin with an easy challenge: you are armed with the Nemean Cestus (Hercules' weapon - those big massive gauntlets) and your goal is to prevent there being fifty enemies in the arena at any one time. This is more straightforward then it sounds: all you have to do is keep pressing the square button and work your way around the arena, killing as many enemies as you can - obviously fight through the larger concentrations of enemies if there are any. The number should average around late 30s/early 40s. Simply don't stop attacking, and you should get this first time through.

2) Bare Hands
One of the hardest challenges, you need to clear out a bunch of enemies within a strict time limit without any weapons. The only method of attack here is to grab the smaller guys (circle) and use them as a battering ram against the larger guys (square). Even when the larger guys are weakened, DO NOT initiate the button-prompt QTE minigame to finish them off, as you simply don't have time. Keep using enemies as battering rams and, once you've felled the three large enemies, you can instantly kill those remaining by grabbing them (again, circle) and splitting them in half (triangle). With luck, you can group the larger enemies together, or even knock them off the edge!

3) Get Stoned
Personally I found this to be the hardest challenge. To get a Gorgon to stun you, try and grab it - it will recoil back and fire a green fog at you. Rotate the left analogue stick to break free after being turned to stone. You'll need to do this ten times, and a new enemy type is introduced in the small arena every two successful attempts, which means the arena quickly becomes crowded. When you're stunned, only one attack will kill you, and herein lies the main problem with this challenge.

Note that you can press circle to grab the small humanoid "opponents" that simply wander the arena to get a small amount of health. Do not fly into the Gorgon's green mist, as being turned to stone while in the air will instantly kill you when you land and break apart. Ultimately, you'll need a lot of luck to get through this.

4) El Matador - Ole
A relatively easy challenge, if you know how to approach it. PowerPyx's video (below) shows him grabbing the edge of the arena as the minotaurs approach him, so they charge over his head and off the edge of the arena. A fine strategy, but I prefer using L1 and circle to grapple towards and smash straight into them, which interrupts their charge. For the soldiers, L1 and square (repeatedly tap the latter button) has Kratos whirl his blades around him, pushing them back if not killing them entirely. Keep using this strategy until the last wave, where a bunch of minotaurs and soldiers attack at once: either use PowerPyx's method of hanging off the edge when the minotaurs close in to get rid of them first, or activate your Rage (L3 and R3 - click both analogue sticks in) and go to town on the minotaurs. Finish off the stragglers with L1 and square.

5) Knockout
Begin by immediately attacking the Cyclops as he spawns. Once he's down, follow the QTE minigame to get atop him. Now the fun begins. Simply walk around the arena bashing everyone you see. There's little strategy involved here (but a lot of luck); aim for the soldiers or larger concentrations of enemies, and go around the edges of the arena when possible. Eventually you'll complete this.

6) Hades' Kids
Another easy challenge; simply use the Plume of Prometheus attack (square, square, triangle) to deal massive damage to the Cyclops, as well as stunning them. Keep doing this until they die (you can always finish them off with the QTE minigame, if you'd like. With a bit of luck, you can even push them off the arena) and more will arrive. This challenge immediately ends when five Cyclops are in the arena at any one time. The trick here is to stun them so as to avoid being pushed off the arena yourself.

7) Simply Smashing
This is the last challenge, and surprisingly I personally found it one of the toughest ones; it is at least a short challenge, however. Work your way around the arena *tapping* square to extend your blade forward and break the vases. Do not initiate a combo, as it wastes very precious time. You'll eventually figure out an optimal route for this or get lucky.

I found an easy way to do Get Stoned challenge: as soon the Gordon Green bean appear, press L1 to start a QTE. Choose the wrong button and you will instantly get stoned! It makes things easier because you won't get hurt while you wait to get stoned and it will make the whole process faster. Do this trick after the big enemies attack so you will have some time to break the stone without being attacked.

For me, Bare Hands is the most annoying and difficult challenge of all, since is very luck based and the way I made it was this:
As soon as start, grab skeleton and throw it to the near hammer guy with O + X. Maybe that will make the hammer guy runs towards you, so go to the edge and hang there until the running hammer guy fall off. That will give you enough time to finish all the other enemies normally (don't press O to execution).

The stupid spartan hangs to the edge for a few seconds, so if you fall or fail making the hammer guy fall off, restart the challenge. The only way to achieve this is that, at least, one big enemy falls to death.

Keep in mind the stupid Kratos decides to grab the big guy instead of the skeleton he haves in front. Thanks Santa Monica developers to make me waste my precious time in this stupid garbage. I hope you all get at least a deadly diarrhea for this.

For El Matador, I did this same strategy of hanging to the edge and expecting the enemies to fall of.

I will only focus on the most difficult ones, since for the others any guide here or there are enough for:

To get this trophy, you must successfully complete the 7 challenges. These challenges vary in difficulty and skill required. Some a pretty easy while others will make you want to pull your hair out. The best advice I can give is to have patience. It took me 3 days to finish one of these challenges, so just take your time.

F8L Fool has written an amazing guide for the Challenges of Olympus, complete with strategies and details on the challenge itself. It can be found here: Challenge of Olympus Guide

Below are videos for each individual challenge. Check them out if you're still having trouble with one (or more) of them. Credit to PowerPyx for all the videos.

In the test with the gorgons, first of all, you need to choose the moment when you are frozen, so that no one hits you, and basically running around and killing zombies is a waste of time, after 5-6 turns into stone, a full PE begins, so it’s better not to stop ...

Tactics of the 3rd test: we try to capture the Medusas, after which they always freeze you. We don’t press any buttons and freeze peacefully, but we start pulling the left stick even before that. Passed on the third try.

Pay attention in the third test at the end, when the enemy is in overdrive, blocking with a rune helps. Some of the enemies turn to stone, which gives you some freedom and time.

1. Into the light
In this challenge, it is best to grab opponents and push others( ), and also when there are a lot of skeletons around, use the combination + , fortunately the Nemean cestus will throw them all into the abyss.

2. Bare hands
There are two options for killing the enemy here. The first is to grab skeletons ( ) and run headlong at the enemy, the more blows you deal before Kratos throws out the skeleton or he dies, the better. The second option is to grab the skeletons, run headlong, and push the enemy standing on the edge out of the arena. Without using both methods, it is almost impossible to pass the test. You can push both the statues and the giant, in any order.
Important tips for testing:
1. Try to spend the lives of the skeleton you captured mainly on the giant and statues with hammers.
2.Try not to stick captured skeletons into stones (this brutal kill takes 2-3 seconds).
3.Try not to click near the giant and the statues over which he is burning.

3. Into stone
Everything is relatively simple if you follow some nuances. To make the gorgon start shining on you faster, run up to it and press . Once under the light, press , but do not press the next proposed button (otherwise everyone around you except you will turn to stone), instead, your left thumb should already be moving the left joystick at full speed (to quickly stop being a statue).
If your standard of living becomes critically low, then run up to the Wandering Souls and press (at this time no one deals damage to you, and besides, you have one green sphere in your collection).
Be careful with the harpies. When you see a red circle on the ground below you, under no circumstances let the gorgon turn you into a statue.

4. El matador
The most common mistake when first completing this challenge is jumping over enemies. I don’t advise you to do this, because the probability of being hit by some skeleton is very high.
We hit the first minotaur twice , then lights up above it and we finish him off. It is not worth fighting against the following minotaurs, it is better to throw them off the cliff (you can stand on the edge and hover in the air using the wings of Icarus, but it is better to hang on the ledge and move there in different directions). Hit skeletons with L1 , tilting the joystick at the end of the combo at the surviving group of skeletons whose probability of missing a hit is highest.

5. Bouncer
The easiest of all tests. First, we hit the giant with a combination until a (it is advisable that it appears within 20 seconds). Then we climb onto it and begin to swing the baton in all directions. ( ). Try to hit the minotaurs and the ghosts of Olympia most often.

6. Children of Hades
The fastest way to kill a Cyclops is with a blow . This same technique allows you to “recoil” the Cyclops, increasing the likelihood of him falling from the edge of the arena.
It is advisable to kill the first cyclops before the second and third appear. On the 2nd and 3rd, try to land a couple of blows “for two” (save time). And then you can even afford to snatch the galaz from the remaining cyclops.

7. Complete destruction
There is almost no need for commentary on this test. Hit vases by clicking 1-2 times. The more vases you break in one hit, the better.
