How to unlock the Free As A Band achievement in Guitar Hero: Smash Hits - Definitive Guide

For those not blessed with the skill or stamina (or competent friends) to play a long and quite difficult song on expert, fear not... this song is highly doable on medium/hard, provided you are able to score 98% or higher on those difficulties. I played hard bass with all the other instruments on medium and we scored around 2.3 million this way... the key to high scores is to maintain streaks for a x4 multiplier and to utilise star power at the same time; higher difficulties give you more notes and therefore more points are possible, but if you keep breaking streaks then you will find you score higher on lower difficulty. We found it helped to have the vocalist (who has very little to do in the second half of the song when the bulk of the notes are) keep an eye on the meter for us so we weren't distracted by checking it and tell us when we had enough to deploy it... the thing that cost us the achievement first attempt was people missing notes while glancing at the rock meter, or our drummer breaking his streak while activating star power when there wasn't enough. Teamwork is the key... there's no 'I' in "Free As A Band" after all ;)

Pretty sure you need all 4 instruments for this. I got over 2 million using guitar\bass\drums and it didn't pop. I put a mic against a fan on beginner difficulty for a fourth band member and tried again and the achievement popped.

I have created a way to use a computer to play drums perfectly to help obtain this achievement. You will still have to have some friends to play the other instruments but this will allow you to have a perfect expert drummer if you are having troubles. I have created a video tutorial for this method but I have included full text instructions as well.

You can do this locally or in online quickplay. Make sure you have four instruments because this trophy is almost impossible with 3 or less.

Make sure you have a good guitarist with you who can do the song with good score on Expert. You can get 600,000 with just the guitar if you do well.

Drums for this song are easy but in the middle of the song there is a very long drum fill that can cause you to fail the song so make sure you are on hard or you're a good drummer.

Bass is very simple. You shouldn't have much trouble with it. If you can't do well on other instruments pick bass.

Vocals are very simple. You don't have to do Expert. Make sure you are on a difficulty setting where you can almost 100% the song because Vocals are the main source of star power.

Make sure everyone activates star power together and during parts where you all have a good streak going. Everyone should also save starpower for the ending. Guitar and Bass have rapid strumming here which will get you a lot of points.
