Hail The Reverend

Hail The Reverend

Get 5 stars on the song Beast And The Harlot Expert Drums without using Star Power.

2.0%

How to unlock the Hail The Reverend achievement in Guitar Hero: Smash Hits - Definitive Guide

For this achievement you must 5 star 'Beast and the Harlot' on Expert or Expert Plus Drums without using star power.

The star cut-offs are as follows:

1 star - 60,000
2 star - 120,000
3 star - 180,000
4 star - 360,000
5 star - 500,000

This achievement isn't too tough compared to 'Bloody Feet' and 'Golden Voice' however might cause a few of you to get stuck. If you are a decent drummer and regularly play on Expert then this will come to you naturally after a few attempts. If you aren't an expert drummer then this song isn't too tough to learn, it's the chorus and easy patterns you want to learn, I'm not the greatest drummer in the world but I hit the goal by more than 100,000 points.

Another thing to use which may help is Hyper-speed, personally I use 4 for Guitar and 3 for drums, therefore I recommend either 2 or 3 for this specific achievement.

Don't worry about another pedal, if you can do the chorus then your foot should be trained well enough to cope with the red drum rolls whilst hitting the pedal. If not, then you still need to practice, don't expect to try and get this instantly if you're unfamiliar with expert drums.

Finally, remember not to hit that last note, you don't want to get to 500,000 and then void it by hitting the last notes, simply leave it and enjoy your achievement!

Happy achievement hunting!

Yeah, I don't think any tutorials are able to be completed without the World Tour Drums which is a shame.

I'm using the Rock Band drum kit, which only has four pads. It is still compatible with Guitar Hero games though.

But you won't be able to complete the tutorials in GH:WT or GH:M with the rock band drums, which sucks wanker

Oh great then, I was going to get one for Christmas but it wouldn't have arrived in time. Good luck anyways!

The Ion kit is much more reliable than most drum kits out there. It's not TOO expensive and has lasted me just over three years now. Unfortunately the website that sells them are completely out, and the company who makes them stopped making them about a month ago.

Lucky for you I found a link to a kit with a double bass expansion - http://rockbandparts.com/?product=ion-drum-rocker-core-doubl...

I have bought from here a few times, so it's trustworthy. I don't live in America either but they do ship to other countries.

would you say the achievement is easier with the ion drum kit? (Rock band) How do I add 2 bass pedals to it? Can you give me a link on where to get another one please?

For this one, you have to five star the song Beast and the Harlot on Expert Drums, WITHOUT the use of star power.

The five star cut-off is almost EXACTLY 500,000 points.

This is a toughie, since BatH is one of the highest tiered drum songs, being behind only Caught in a Mosh, Raining Blood, and the notorious Through the Fire and Flames.

I can't really give any specific pointers here, you just have to be good at drums. Some suggestions I can give though...

- If you don't normally play expert drums, you probably won't get this. It's not the most difficult drum song in the game (or in any GH for that matter), but trust me. If you aren't an expert drummer, don't even attempt it.

- I HIGHLY recommend having two pedals, even though you are not on expert plus. This helps for the beginning part (before the vocals), as well as the brief buildup before the chorus (if your right leg is getting sore) and the part after the first chorus.

- Getting the chorus down is ESSENTIAL. This is the B+R+Pedal, etc... part. There's a lot of fast off-beat kicks, so you NEED to get good at keeping combo through these. I found it impossible with Hyperspeed 4 on, but turning it down to 2 helped drastically.

- The solo. The first part (with the kicks) is easy enough, since the kick beat never changes. If you have two pedals, just keep a steady beat and hit the notes accordingly. The second part however (with the rolls) is where people tend to fail. All I can suggest is hit the reds fast, while doing the pedal the best you can. Don't worry so much about the other pads until the end. It'll take practice.

- The part where you have constant kicks as well as a constant beat (R+B, B, R+B, etc...) has been 'said' to be critical to the five star. I wouldn't say that, but it does make quite a difference.

In addition, for this part, DONT use two pedals. It sounds weird, but hear me out. When you strike the blue pad, use your body momentum to hit the pedal as well. If it sounds tiring, it sure as hell is. But, I found this kept the timing much better than using two pedals. Oddly enough.

- Do NOT hit the very last note in the song (The R+Y+Pedal). This triggers star power, though strangely it did not for me once. Only once though, every other time it activated it.

- If you're crazy, you can do this in Expert Plus if you choose. The cut-off for that is about 600,000.

When i did this, my problem was that my star power kept activating by it self. So what i did, was everytime a star power phrase came up, i intentionally missed it so i never even had star power to use. This might screw you up though because you can't afford to break your combo, but if your only misses are on SP phrases, you'll be fine.
For the drum solo, just hit the red pad the whole time and try your best with the pedal. If you hit the red the whole time, you'll overhit a bit, but its better than trying to hit the red when its actually there and missing. Finally, hit the green fill at the end of the solo, and you should be fine. I usually finish in the yellow.

TUTORIAL

1. You will need any GH Drums "Brain"
External image
, a USB to MIDI cable, and a PC or Mac capable of installing and running the free software called REAPER(http://www.reaper.fm/download.php) . I recommend the USB to MIDI cable I use, it’s cheap and functional http://www.surplustronics.co.nz/product/173.011/9541-origina....

2. DO NOT EXPECT THIS TO WORK ON THE FIRST TRY. I would allow 10-30 minutes per trophy/song in Guitar Hero.

3. You will need to go to the link above to download a free 60 day trial of REAPER. You will be using REAPER to play the files I provide to your GH Drums "Brain" MIDI INPUT and obviously in-game too.

4. After REAPER has been installed choose the song you want to play from the directory of files. Click on the link above and download the file you need.

5. Get your GH Drums "Brain" andd USB to MIDI cable. Connect your USB to MIDI cable to your computer, plug the MIDI out end of the cable into the MIDI INPUT of your Drums Brain, and then plug your Drums Adapter into your Playstation 3.

6. Open up the file you downloaded in REAPER by double clicking it and on the input/output option on the “Part_Drums” MIDI file choose your USB-to-MIDI cable as the MIDI OUTPUT.

7. Zoom in and drag the start point as close to the first note as you can without touching the first note.

8. Start up the game of your choice and select the song that matches the file you have downloaded and opened.

9. Start the song and get ready to press play in REAPER.

10. There is a slight delay between pressing the play button in REAPER and when REAPER actually starts playing the notes, so press play slightly before the first note crosses the “hit zone” in Guitar Hero .

11. If you have timed it perfectly, great, REAPER will now play 100% of the notes in the song and unlock the desired trophy.

12. If REAPER is missing notes it is because you pressed play either too early or too late. All you need to do to get REAPER to work is to is try again and again. I found the easiest way is to first hit stop in REAPER, restart the song, and try again.

This achievement can be hard if you're not really good at Drums, so I recommend getting to a point where you can 5-star most of the setlist before even attempting this achievement.

Once you reach that point, practice the Chorus section in particular: the song in itself is really not that hard compared to, say, Through the Fire and Flames or Raining Blood, but that section could give some problems, especially for people who are not "real" drummers.

When you practice that section, try playing just the kick drum, then add the snare. When you feel confident enough, add the cymbal to the mix.
If you manage to nail this section, you can pretty much get the achievement. I personally made it on my second attempt.

Be careful in the final section: DO NOT hit the last note, as many people reported that it triggers Star Power, causing you to fail the achievement.

On last note, if you're still struggling with the Chorus, try to keep the rhythm for the snare and the kick at all costs: if you manage to stay on the beat you will most likely avoid failing the song. On the other hand, it is very hard to get back on time in that section if you mess up badly.

This trophy can be quite hard. You have to be a good drummer to get it.

Go to quickplay and do the song 'Beast And The Harlot' on Expert. You do NOT have to do it on Expert+.

You can't use the star power at all. Star power is activated by hitting both cymbals. Be careful not to activate it accidentally during the parts where you have to play both cymbals together. Practice the song in lower difficulty settings and in Practice mode. You need to keep your streak going throughout the song. Make sure to practice the Verse and Chorus so you can 100% them.

The hardest part about this trophy is that you have to pass the drum solo without star power. The first part is pretty simple. Just fast kick notes and some random drums. The second part is a crazy drum fill. You can get past this if you rapidly keep hitting the drum pad where the fill is going and make sure to hit the kicks in between the fills too. Don't mind about the random hi-hats between the fills.

Do the hardest sections in Practice mode and you should be able to get 5 stars on it with enough practice. If you are having trouble, you can get a friend to work the kicks for you while you do the upper drum pads.

To get 5 stars you'll need about 500,000 points.

Below is a video showing how to get this trophy.
