Hand Mutilator

Beat Black Widow of La Porte as a solo Expert Guitarist (Quickplay+, except Power Challenges)

How to unlock the Hand Mutilator achievement in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock - Definitive Guide

This achievement is rather difficult for those not very experienced at Guitar Hero. Especially since GH6 brought the difficult guitar back.

Must be done solo on expert in Quickplay+ with no super powers.

You must beat quest mode before you unlock this song for Quickplay+.

This is my best run so far (I've only played the song twice, including this run) I made some stupid mistakes, but it's still a 5-star run. (92%; 482 note streak)

Excuse the quality bc it sucks, because I recorded it on my webcam. & it looks like I miss a lot of notes, but I don't. It's just the way I had to calibrate the lag since I'm on a HDTV.

A few pointers, save up star power for the tricky parts, (the snake solo, and some tapping sections). You cannot use super powers so this one will probably give you more trouble than the "Chosen One" achievement, but overall this song isn't too bad. Doesn't even touch "Through the Fire and Flames" in terms of difficulty ;).

Good luck!

*This is my video :) Just added it so people could see the chart if they were curious.

Edit: The achievement didn't unlock for me in the video because I had already unlocked it, as this was my second run through the song.

Edit: KamhiX96 said in a comment that Hyperspeed doesn't disable. I use Hyperspeed 3, so yes you can use it. If you don't know how to turn it on then look at his comment :)

I was having trouble with this song at first. Once I got past web spinning(using SP of course), I beat the whole rest of the song without star power(I was shocked when I beat Spider Crawl still in the low Green), but from "Web Spinning" to "Spider Crawl" and after that was easy enough. I recommend to use star power in 3 spots: in the beginning solo, Web Spinning, and Spider Crawl if you have to(or anywhere else you know FOR SURE you will fail)

it's a setting that speeds the board up and spreads the notes out making it easier to read for some people.

Yeah I didn't like Hyperspeed at first I thought it was cheap of people of using it. But makes notes alot easier to read because they're all clustered together sometimes.

If you need to, just break it down to the tapping parts in practice mode. If you feel that doesn't help, just save up star power and just use it through the tapping sections. They shouldn't be long enough to make you fail if you have star power deployed. Remember, for this achievement you don't have to pull off anything fancy, you just have to pass the song. :)

I hate this song with a passion. I can now get to about 15-16% but in the red... And its almost impossible to recover because theres so many dam solo's!

I just got it on the first shot now. As odd as it seems, I used two hands for the tapping parts. As you don't have to strum with the right hand, you might as well use it there. Just remember to bring your hand back pretty sharpish once you come to the end of the taps. But yeah, other than one non-tap solo that I SP'd through (which I suspect is the snake solo), there's nothing that's too hard.

Yeah, I agree, this song's really not as bad as you'd think. It's still quite advanced, but if you've been playing guitar hero since the beginning, then you should be fine. Especially if you're good at Guitar Hero 3, since that's the hardest GH, imo.

Hyperspeed ain't cheap and it's not a cheat, hence it being in 'extras' instead of cheats now in these games.

It's a trade-off. The notes come faster, spaced out more, so you don't have as much time to 'plan' mentally. However, the trade-off is that you can see them more clearly. It just requires quicker hand-eye coordination.

And fck my fingers. This song isn't that hard--at least up until the point where I failed, and I could probably get through it if i didn't waste my SP. I failed at the halfway mark and had choked on a few SP combos beforehand. Next time!

Just confirmed that using 'excessive pausing' also disables the achievement. I learned that the hard way :(

Thank you! There's not a trick to get it, my only advice is that you practice it over and over. And you don't have to do anything fancy (ie. 5-star it), all you gotta do is pass. So the best trick would be to hoard your star power and use it whenever you think you are gonna fail. There are a couple of hard parts (the long tapping solos and snake solo). My suggestion is that you just save up your star power for the hardest parts, and good luck. Dont give up!

I can probably do it myself eventually but the only part that gets me is spinning web A. Because I have to use my star power up at the moment before it with the tapping section.

It's become apparent to me.. I'll never have this achievement. I managed to do Holy Wars on Expert Bass, no powers, but this. This is insane. I mean, I drum in real life, so Fury of the Storm wasn't too bad. Megadeth just wasn't hard. This song, this is impossible to me. I can't even do the first snake notes on Hard, haha. Great job on the video though. Very impressive.

I'd like you to note that Black Widow of La Porte is the longest on-disc sing in the game (as far as I know).

So for some reason I thought this said Bass, not Guitar. As I was playing the song I thought "Ok I know I'm not bad at this game, but they are really blowing this out of proportion". At the same time, I was hearing the guitar in the background thinking to myself, "Besides, it could be worse. That guitar sounds brutal."

When the achievement didn't unlock, I double checked the solution and saw my mistake. Needless to say, I was making up new curse words in my head because existing ones just didn't cover my feelings.

How long did you play guitar hero before attempting this song? Have you practiced for many years on other difficult song before? If not, then I don't believe you at all.

I've played guitar hero since 2005. I started on medium, but caught on quickly. I have pretty much every guitar hero achievement (except for the co-op ones in 3 because no one else locally is really good and they don't do online co-op on that game >:O)

It's worth noting that turning Hyperspeed on does NOT disable this achievement. I just played through Black Widow on Hyperspeed 2, and at the end of the song the achievement still popped. If you're having trouble seeing the notes clearly, I suggest turning HS on at a low level to help you a bit. Doing this in conjunction with xBrushedRedx's helpful advice will definitely make this achievement more attainable.
If you don't know how to activate Hyperspeed, go to the player/instrument selection screen, scroll down to Options, select Extras, and set the Hyperspeed level to whatever you feel comfortable with.

Followup: I was wrong about 'next time' haha.
I did get to 85% though.. activation fail...

Next time?

My hands are fcked though once again so another day.

You need to first beat the Quest mode to unlock the final tier of songs, then play Black Widow of La Porte in Quickplay on expert guitar single player. No powers allowed. Good luck, as its a tough song. There's a handful of easy star power charges you can get, definitely save them until you absolutely need it as there are a couple of brutal sections like the tapping solo that go on for a while. Unfortunately there's no easy way to get this, like using the power challenge for the FOTS drums achievement.

I'm not of a guitar player on Guitar hero, more of a drummer. but this was certainly challenging. Only hint i can give is try and survive with full star power till the spinning web solo B part. use star power then. once your pass that bit star power is once again easy to obtain. the rest of the song is easy after that (like i said, coming from a non guitar player on GH)

This trophy is true to its name, don't expect to get this trophy if you are not used to playing on Expert difficulty.

The Good News: Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock's Hammer ons are possibly the smoothest they have been since Guitar Hero 3.
The rock meter in this game seems to be more lenient than previous games.
This song is not as bad as Jordan (GH2) or Through the Fire and Flames (GH3) when thinking in terms of being able to pass the song.
The worst part of the song in my opinion uses Tap notes which are easier to hit and you are much more likely to pass the section.

The Bad News: This song consists mostly of sweeping solos.
You can't do power challenges for this one like you can for Fury of the Storm on Drums. You have to play this song outside of Power challenges meaning you cannot use the Quest power ups.

The song seems to alternate between easier and harder sections rather a lot and rather rapidly. Just because you're doing fine one moment does not necessarily mean that you will be fine the next moment.
It's hard to name particular sections of the song as they are all have a particularly hard intensity, my best advice would be to save star power for when you really need it.
The song does get harder as it goes along but not too much harder, there is a section which is full of tap notes and that is a sign that you are close to the end of the song. If you pass this section, you're home as the song winds down shortly after.
The song may also seem harder later on as your hands will become tired from the intensity of the song, stuff that seems easy you may miss for this reason.

This song is still tough but it is not as tough as tricky songs from other guitar hero games, the game engine in this game partially makes this song easier to do.

Best of luck to all of you.

This is another hard trophy. You are not allowed to use powers to complete this song. I suggest that you save your star power for tough parts. If you still can’t beat it, just keep practicing.

The main thing I can advise is:

  • Set "Hyper Speed" (Options - Extras in the lobby) to 3 - 5, because the notes start flying faster and you don't get lost in them, i.e. on the screen with parameter 0 there is simply a huge number of notes, and with 3, 4 or 5 turned on there are tens of times fewer of them (Although this is quite a bit, you still need to get used to it).
  • Play this song a couple of times in practice mode (I played 1 on Slow to get acquainted with the song, find out what, where, when and at Full Speed to confirm the position of Venom solo serial solokiller solo for myself and already know exactly where to accumulate and use Star Power .
You also need to remember that:

  • Star Power - Our best, very best friend!! The fact is that it not only doubles the points, but also helps a lot to keep the Rock Meter level.
  • Venom soloserial solokiller solo - It's like a minefield... the most difficult in my opinion is Venom Solo... I don't know why, but I lost more on it... even though this zone does not require the use of the Strum Bar.
A little more information about my game... maybe it will help you:

  • I didn't use the Touch Strip at all, just the buttons
  • During solos (except for Venom Solo ) I often ( BUT! not at breakneck speed ) twitched the Strum bar because There's simply no point in hoping for luck with these Hammer-ons .
For reference*
Hyper speed - increased speed of the track with notes. Configured in the lobby.
Venom soloserial solokiller solo - Guitar solo, you can find out in what order they are in Practice mode. (Practice - Training, can be enabled from the menu while playing this song)
Star Power - Activated by raising the neck of the guitar (Who knows?)
Touch Strip - Let's put it this way - a “string simulator” that is located under the buttons.
Hammer-on - Highlighted notes that can be played without the Strum Bar. (Will not be played if the normal note before this Hammer-on by a bunch of Hammer-ons was failed).
