As far as I know, the only way to get rare ingredients without purchasing them from the shop (which you shouldn’t do) is to complete challenges in the Wild Zone. That said, collecting 100 of them should come naturally in your quest for the ''All Stars'' trophy. So, you should only farm the challenges for rare items after you get that trophy.

Rare ingredients will be given to you for completing Challenges. 4 pieces for Novice and 8 for Expert. If you complete all the trophies on your first playthrough, the trophy will open by itself, since you will need to complete all Challenges for all dragons in order to level them up to level 25.
