How to unlock the Pain Builds Character achievement in InFamous 2 - Definitive Guide

I did this playthrough with the good karma for two reasons. One of the boosts from having full good karma is the ability to recharge your electricity when you hit humans with bolts and there is a rapid fire bolt upgrade.

General Tips:
1. As soon as you can, use UGC mission to get all the blast shards. Searching '305' will give you several missions to choose from. This also helps with the blast shards trophies.

2. Stay high. Use the tops of buildings to get around.

3. Some mission will feature faction infighting. DON'T INTERRUPT! Unless you decide to join in, the infighting factions will ignore you.

4. Don't be afraid to run away and regroup. Charge often. The main reason I died was because I ran out of electricity.

These should help you get through the hard playthrough. It is not a hard game as long as you think things through and keep track of your electricity,

To ensure you unlock this trophy when you attempt to complete the game on hard, follow these steps:

  1. Start a new game, and as soon as you gain control of Cole, press to enter the in-game menu
  2. Go to Options and change the difficulty to Hard
  3. Save, then start another new game
  4. You'll now begin the game automatically on Hard

Note that based on your performance in the game's "tutorial level", if you did extraordinary well, the game will automatically bump you up to Hard. This will not affect you earning the trophy.

On Hard, enemies will generally hit harder and will take many more hits before defeated. In addition, any stunts will earn you less experience compared to Normal/Easy.

Some tips:

Good Karma

  • Good karma powers focus on efficiency; an emphasis in taking out enemies quickly with little energy consumption
  • Every time you restore your energy, you'll also automatically heal yourself. That said, focus on purchasing abilities that restores your energy upon use
  • Reaching the Hero Karmic Rank unlocks the passive ability that allows you to restore energy everytime your bolts hit any normal sized enemy; very useful in powered down areas
  • The Frost Shield and the Ice Rockets are your best friends; combine this with the Ionic Vortex and the game becomes a cake walk

Bad Karma

  • Bad karma powers focus on Area of Effect abilities; an emphasis in hitting multiple opponents with each blast of your powers
  • One of the main advantages of being a bad ass, though you could do this on your Good Karma playthrough regardless, is Bio Leeching. Bio Leeching restores your health and energy to full; again very useful in powered down areas
  • This time around, consider grabbing the Scyth Bolt, Napalm/Double Grenades and the bad karma related Rockets as soon as you can. Again, combine this with the Ionic Vortex and you should have no trouble (not that you were anyway) tackling Hard

There have been reports that this trophy does not unlock properly if you skip the ending credits. If that happens, simply beat the game again (you'll be taken back prior to making your last decision end game) and sit through the credits this time and it should unlock.

In fact, there is no difference who you play for (good guy/villain), the choice is purely cosmetic. But there are nuances:

- at a high level of difficulty Cole is very flimsy, and the enemies are tenacious. There may often be situations where you can get hit by a car/large debris that was thrown away by the blast even from your attack.

- if you are a villain, then civilians can attack you, this is not fatal, but it is very distracting. On the other hand, during battles with enemies, civilians will often get in the way (here it would be better to survive, not to save people) and their death can “overshadow your karma.” Although for a radical shift in karma it is necessary to carry out a real genocide of the inhabitants, and over time the good fellow will receive an ability that will protect civilians from your attacks. And the villain, even during the battle, will be able to “drain” anyone and rush into battle again.

I will also give some useful tips when playing on a difficult difficulty level. You can find them in this topic.

If you take the trophy on your second playthrough, change the difficulty level to high before starting a new game. This way, you won't have to change the difficulty in the game itself. I’m writing because some who changed the difficulty in the game itself did not receive a trophy.

The difficulty level can only be changed in the first mission against the beast

You don't have to worry too much about XP. as soon as you realize that you don’t have enough funds for improvements, go online, search for Easy XP and boost it to the required amount.

Getting this trophy is not at all difficult; I personally received it during my first playthrough as a hero.

For as long as I have completed Notorious Reputation, it is also at a high level of difficulty, and probably for this it was so easy for me. As far as everything depends on you during the passage, I can give you some advice.

  • Play as a criminal.
  • When choosing between Coe and Knicks, always choose Knicks except for the final choice.
  • Leave secondary tasks for last, don’t look for even bigger hemorrhoids on your butt.
  • When you fight a boss, don’t worry, they are very weak, the easiest way is to just throw grants at them ( + ).
After you have completed the last mission after the credits, you will automatically receive it.

The trophy is glitchy and may not open - it’s best to set the difficulty to high immediately after the introductory video and not wait for the game to offer it itself. I didn’t get this trophy, although I honestly completed everything at a high level. Epic fail!
